As slipping in the bathroom is more dangerous than rattlesnake bite, I have removed my bath tub and replaced it with a Western Diamondback.

Went hiking and had a traumatic experience with a huge rattlesnake. Tiny narrow trail and two big dogs tugging at the leash. Scary position to be in while pregnant.

I came across a western diamond back rattlesnake in RL Paso Texas, earlier this year. I was shocked, I was walking to my hotel at nights. My momentum carried me away from it. I could hear it fleeing into a bush. Indeed snakes do everything they can to avoid humans. They're far more afraid of humans then we are of them.

I encountered a huge rattlesnake last month. We decided to hike up the mountainside to give it a wide birth. Tried 20 feet at first and it still rattled, so we cranked it up to about 35 feet and were even behind a few pinons. When we regained line of sight with it rattled again despite the distance, yet we felt comfortable enough at that distance to just yell "we're trying ok!"

I came across one on a trail. Was coiled up off to the side. Came back and it was popping it's cute little head out of the brush.

Beautiful C. atrox in your video. By the way, getting struck by lightning is one of my fears, so what you said is NOT encouraging to me, considering I actively LOOK for wild rattlers when out on the trail. My storm-scared brain reasons that my adding herping to my list of hobbies substantially increases my odds of being struck by lightning. Which is a totally obscure reason to be afraid of rattlesnakes, but 'tis the nature of a weather phobia.
@enterthevision29 жыл бұрын
AtarahDerek Interesting you say that. The rattlesnake is associated with lightning in our deep minds. The Native Americans have many views of the Rattlesnake and one of them is that he is the incarnation of the spirit of lightning. He is also said to journey to the underworld during hibernation season to communicate with the rain gods. He manifests his spirit in rain storms. The thunder is his vicious temperament, lightning his deadly strike, and the falling rain just like the sound of his rattle. Glad to see people respecting these animals.

People have been killing rattlesnakes for at least 150 years here in AZ and there still around. They must be pretty good breeders.
@SawyersHerpetology3 жыл бұрын
Depending on the species they can have 5 to 12 young per live birthing.

Animals have to b able to reproduce quickly if not humans would wipe them all out, look whats happening with the big animals such as rhinos that reproduce n low numbers, if humans find them valuable (rhinos horn, elephants tusk etc.) Or if they find them dangerous, like snakes, they tend to do major damage to that animals popular, so they either reproduce quickly or go extinct

They are not GENERALLY aggressive. But they do sometimes become quite aggressive. I don't know which is worse, the kill 'em all approach, or this "gee, aren't they cute" approach that can get you killed. No mention either of the common "rattlesnake nest" where, it would be really stupid to take the "take two steps backwards" advice given here. Leave rattlesnakes alone and they will leave you alone: USUALLY. For the not usual but also not exactly uncommon, Smith & Wesson makes revolvers. If you were foolish enough to go out into the desert without that Smith & Wesson, well, here's hoping you make it back to New Jersey safely.

the gee aren't they cute approach lets them life, and since 2001 when i moved to AZ I haven't heard of anyone dying from a snake bite here.

As a socal resident I was walking at a park near my house and encountered one while wearing flip flops, thought I was going to get bit. No rattle no bite. Happened back in 2020 and now somewhat traumatized by that area 😅😅😅

“You probably have walked by one”, then it’s the second person behind you that gets bit?😳
@peterf.2295 жыл бұрын
being the second person, usually I have never been bitten, I have had some times where they rattled cause my foot was closer to them , I climbed onto a rock once, the snake was under the rock.. it was 2 feet high and I knew the snake was on top of the rock.. so I went there for safety.
@debifreeman96285 жыл бұрын
I don't want them anywhere near my house or my dogs, but I have no desire to kill them. If I meet one, I would rather walk around them (about 30 feet away, though) and both of us emerge unscathed.

Also don't stand between the snake and the nearest piece of cover it can crawl under ... It wants protection like a soldier wants a foxhole. If the snake is in the open and there is a log behind you and not much other cover around.. MOVE your ascot. Give it a free passage to the nearest point of cover whether that is an object or tall grass. Consequentally if you need to catch it for removal away from children/animals.. put a 5 gallon bucket near it.. or a cardboard box where the snake can crawl in.. it's nature is to seek cover and most likely it will seek refuge if the item can provide it.. I have caught/removed many snakes like this with nothing more than a bucket/box and a long stick to prod it towards the box/bucket.

I have had two dogs in the same year to get bit by timberback rattlers. Sure if your a human that is able to think about what the best way to avoid this animal is then yea this man is right %100 . But a dog ? A dog does not know that these are dangerous and a dog well most dogs will stick their nose in any and i mean ANY hole or wood pile or what ever. Which is what my two did stuck their noses in a pile of rough cut lumber i had sawed up, and bam!! Big female timber back taged em on their noses. Thankfully they were swolen for a few weeks and felt like shit im sure but neither died. They did have severe tissue damage and some scarring but not dead. That s not allways the case. Rattle snakes can kill if they bite you.

Out here in Arizona, some of the dog trainers offer rattlesnake avoidance training. I may have my dog get that training.
