Thanks for your kind response Raul. The other way of coupling safely is to drop the ride height before yo back under the trailer and stop short with about half the fifth wheel under, then you can lift up on the air ride and slide under. It takes some practice but it's quick and saves and possible damage. Of course this only works as long as some plonked has not pointed the trailer skywards so the visual inspection wins every time.The air suspension idea surely would have been an option for you without skids or lead ramps with your European driving. However the job is done is up to what the driver feels safe and happy with and how you do it is your decision. Keep safe bud
@Raul6893 жыл бұрын
Yes that's how i used to do it. Drop the air before i went in. That is the best way and the correct way
@petersmithyt90913 жыл бұрын
I do this religiously now. Get under it watch the fifth wheel go under then lift the arse up and get the weight of the trailer. Soon as you see the corners lift you know the FW is flat under the skid plate and it’s just a case of backing in straight.

Fortunately I must have just stopped in time. Fortunately a friendly shutter came to my aid and got me out the shit. Still told the other lads though.....bar steward. Lot of the time the yard shutters in their terbergs lift em full height then forget and drop em off with the legs full stretch. Need a ramp to get under em.

I think if there is an air leak on the trailer, then the airbags might deflate and sink, thus making the trailer ahead of the landing legs rise.
@Raul6893 жыл бұрын
don't think so the front of the trailer won't rise that much. it was dropped at max lift from the truck
@loyd4you3 жыл бұрын
Not really, there is a diference in hight between Scania and Merc, the mercs are droping trailers at the same height regardless if the midlift is up or down, the Scania is dropping trailers higher of the midlift is up and if you drop a trailer after you just park up. the trailer will settle it self. We do have a rule about dropping trailers tho, empty or loaded, when you drop a trailer, put the midlift down/

Hi Raul. I am now retired but had 30 years trucking. About 15 on containers. Always stop and check trailer eight before coupling. I am not a racist but it seems with the influx of the different nationalities that we have, none now drops a trailer. In fact they wind them up. You should be able to lift the trailer legs just off the ground as you reverse under without all that winding up just because some numbskull does not know the correct coupling / uncoupling procedure.when you drop a trailer it is much easier to leave the landing legs a couple of inches off the ground and use air suspension to lower the rest of the way when you return to the cab. When the next truck comes to pick up the trailer it will naturally lift the trailer clear when the fifth wheel contacts the pin. This procedure is so easy and prevents inconvenience to other drivers and if everyone did this then all drivers would have an easier life. Not only was there lack of communication from management causing you to waste a frustrating 1 1/2 hrs when you could have saved that waste of duty time but you also nearly had damage because someone else is totally incompetent in dropping a trailer. I used to call it Rocket Launcher mode where the trailer was almost pointing to the sky. Stay vigilant my friend and stay safe too. Dot let the office walkers grind you down as they make more mistakes every day than you will in a month. Safe trucking to you bud.
@Raul6893 жыл бұрын
Thank you Colin You are right us Europeans are used to drop trailers at a higher level than normal. that is because we use different techniques for example European trucks do not have the skids that help the trailer to glide over the chassis when coupling up. that is because we don't change trailers that much. but here in the uk makes much more sense to drop at ride height because you can change 2 3 trailers per day. when I had my own truck in Europe I used to decouple once every 2 months just to grease up the 5th wheel :)
@gsroofs3 жыл бұрын
Starting to like this bloke already lol
@gwandao3 жыл бұрын
We would be sacked for that. We have to reverse in front of the trailer, get out check the 5th wheel is lower than the pin. Drive underneath, lift the suspension to raise the trailer and then couple. Just going under is a P45.

Oops! I think most drivers have done that at least once... I did it first day on the job and then unit suspension wouldn't go low enough to get back out from under the pin. Had to get the yard man to lift front of trailer up with forklift (luckily was an unloaded skeleton so light enough to lift). Not the best start... I always now reverse under then lift the suspension up until I see the trailer lift with the back of the unit to make sure I don't slip under the pin again! That's not to say I don't get other things wrong still 🤦♂️
@Raul6893 жыл бұрын
oh yes I know how that goes. that is what I thought had happen, that's why I went over to the legs and tried to lift the trailer. but lucky enough I could slide under it. it was a loaded box so I would have struggled a bit hahaha

@xj3583 жыл бұрын
UK trucks are still fitted with skids at the back of the 5th wheel which was always the method to drop and couple up trailers prior to the advent of air suspension. I have no idea why drivers no longer leave the landing legs around an inch short of the ground which allows the trailer to partially drop down the skids before coming to rest as well as allowing the trailer to ride back up the skid and on to the 5th wheel when recouping, clearly removing the possibility of missing the King pin. Unless you physically see the trailer start to rise up just as the rear of the tractor unit goes under the front of the trailer, you simply shouldn't keep reversing which will usually result in smashed tail lights.
@Raul6893 жыл бұрын
You are right but the correct procedure would be to stop just before you get under the trailer, jump down and take a look, than adjust air suspension and then reverse. But unfortunately sometimes wd can't be bothered to do that

How do you drop a trailer at maximum height ? And how do you lower to correct height ?
@Raul6893 жыл бұрын
the "correct hight" would be just normal drive hight here in the uk. because drivers change trailers very often. Dropping a trailer at maximum height means that the driver lifted the suspension all the way up before lowering the legs. not a mistake necessarily but it makes it easier for the next driver to go under the trailer
@paulgilmartin2173 жыл бұрын
@@Raul689 thanks pal

2:40 "You're just gonna f**k up when you're rushing"... yes. Totally. Our subconscious is still, and probably always will be the main driver of our brain. Hence addictions, compulsive/impulsive behaviour, bad decisions etc.. even when the individual is as consciously aware as it's possible to be that these things are bad. Whether you believe in evolution or half finished creationism by a mad deity makes no difference. As far as we need ever be concerned our brains are much older than our modern society. When you start rushing it means one thing to our brains, fight or flight. Because there is a form of panic involved. When you consider how totally unaware our old brain is of modern society and the built environment - the moment you go into any sort of panic mode (including rushing) the contemplated, calm and consciously aware mind state you need to satisfy the requirements of our modern society go out of the window. That's when something happens. That's when you forget. Sadly we have a terrible tendency to beat ourselves up for this. I doubt it encourages good relationship between conscious and subconscious. Subconscious probably just feels like a child being beaten up for doing what it thought was right, yet we never take the time to tell it that it was doing the right thing, even though we are angry at the consequences. I could elaborate on this, but it'd be awfully too close as to how so many powerful things in life presently make their profit and tax dollars. So I'll wisely stop there :)

Sorry mate, but you messed up there, and you will do it again unless you change your bad, lazy practices. You should always go and check the trailer and make sure the brake is on before you go under it, then you'll notice if it's been left high. You should always raise your suspension under the trailer too - in order feel the weight of the trailer on it and get the fifth wheel flat. If you do it properly all the time then you will never miss a pin and you can still hook up a trailer in 5 minutes flat .....so there's no excuse really.

drone delivery's waste of money think about it where will they land? there are very fewer car parking places, and it would be rather dangerous landing when there are cars. if you had a garden, you have plants telephone and or electric supply cables?

@@Raul689 still a lethal idea the cars and lorry's have more do not need to keep looking up for a drone dropping on there roof? the only reason for them is to get ride of the delivery drivers and save money.
