I will never not be awed by the ZA/UM devs' decision to all but hand-wave anarchism out of DE's contemporary and historical narrative ("They shot them well. So well one forgets they even existed.") but named the whole city after the _nom de guerre_ of a literal bomb-throwing anarchist.

@@terran5364 Considering this fact and that even DE's Marxism is a bit tongue-in-cheek I do wonder about the personal politics of some of the producers.

@@Todyo1798To me, honestly my interpretation of any “intent” was heavily colored by the kids on the ice, since they’re set up as literally *the positive force keeping the pale contained with their hardcore music*. I may be wrong but the original cultural collective seemed almost *punk*-aligned, and so I have always considered the idea they are more anarchist than marxist-leninist or what-have-you. It did always weird me out that most people seemed to miss what seemed like clear subtext to me to instead specify how “Ah, this is such a post-Soviet take on nostalgia for communism…” it is, sure, but to me it also seems like an anarchist and maybe verging on post-left critique of Scientific Communism in particular, too. Perhaps I’m entirely wrong to speculate on any of this, but it’s just the thoughts the game made me think and I’m curious to see if anyone else saw the same subtext scattered throughout the game. Maybe it’s all just the sines saying this to me, but the sines get shit right, man.

@@vfanonSee, the wild thing to me is that communism in DE is almost layered. You can look at it on a superficial level as a normie and simply take it as a comical critique. Alternatively you could look deeper into it and realize that while bluntly criticizing our own history with socialism and Marxist theory, it might have some weight to it in Elysium. I don't know if you've read any of the translations of Sacred And Terrible Air, but it directly shows that, yes, faith in Communism not only can resist the pale-it can drive it back. The novel succeeds, I feel, in conveying this feeling on the nominally anarchic Kurvitz's part that belief in a socialist project is a belief in goodness without qualification. Justice, morals, and beauty have their utility, but you shouldn't forsake goodness just for them. The enthusiasm becomes something almost admirable in of itself. “Communism is mighty! Believe in communism, it’s a blast! I promise! It’s beautiful if you believe in men, but without it...!” “Without it, there is nothing.” “Nothing. There was a snowstorm, but it was white, it was morning. Communism is white, it’s glistening! Communism is the morning, it’s jubilation!”

@@vfanon I wouldn't say the game is nostalgic, as much as it is hopeful, like just think about the title, "disco elysium", we know from the game that elysium is the world, and we also know that communism, just like disco, once were majour parts of DE's world but have since been almost forgotten, yet they still inspire people to try again, disco is dead, but it's what keeps your character going, and while communism might have seemed dead at the start of the game, there is clearly hope in the end that the better fututre the communards worked for in the first place will see the light of day, especially after a mercenary group hired by a monopoly tried to shoot down civilians. In the end the world is still inspired by disco.

As a french speaker I woukd like to point a pun : in french " trancher " means " decide " but also " cut " so here it means basically " enough talking time to cut your head " Thanks for the song
