Analyzing The Unsung Knight

Now that I've read her lore, let's talk about the Unsung Knight and her lore! There's so much I absolutely love about this lore and about how it's written...but at the same time, I feel like she needs some work too. More than anything, what she needs is...more.

Hey RK, the Daily Orders have mini tidbits of lore. "With her people dying of thirst, the Unsung Knight promised to find water. She searched until chancing on a pond in the wasteland. Two invaders were already circling. But the Unsung Knight would not fail her people." -A Knight of Ashfeld.

That's good, but it doesn't tell us more. I want to know her response to the invaders. What were her thoughts seeing a viking and a samurai for the first time? What was running through her mind? To me, stories can (and definitely should) explore a character, not just events.

fun fact: she sort of appears in the 2015 trailer with the "player" name darthbetty. She uses a kite shield and one handed sword. The pattern on the cloth on the front and back is also the "two and two" paint pattern.

The only thing I would say is I think giving the Unsung Knight a name isn’t in line with what she represents, she stands for the values of what her knighthood means, and she does so without any intention or want for glory or fame or reverence, she does what she does because she believes it’s right. Ubisoft preserving her anonymity feels way more authentic to the vision of the character, plus she can be a stand in for anybody’s Warden OC’s if they wanted, and you get the plausible deniability of “Well they didn’t say it’s Not Ruth/XXX/etc.” which I think is fun. I personally prefer the idea of giving us special skin archetypes for characters because no two players will play the game identically so there’s a loose justification in universe that maybe they’re all inspired by these figures. As much as I love getting specific characters and lore drops I know some people prefer that generalist approach

That's what I'm thinking too. And I have a sneaking suspicion It might be the Lord Warden who comes back to fight for the worthy cause he finally finds in the meaning of the legendary blade, and the extended story Raven wants might be in the next story about the warden, finding it and reading about what this exquisitely crafted sword is, and the meaning behind it, with inspiration from #UnsungRuth in which we hear what she did after finding her purpose. About saving the weak and the destitute, and uniting the knights and the iron Legion under her banner, to start pushing the Viking and samurai marauders out of Ashfeld even though she doesn't live to see her actions bear the fruit she planted and her name forgotten to the sands of time. And then finally with the Lord warden deciding to return back to Ashfeld and drive out Astria and the order of horkos From the land of the faithful and the righteous.

Whoever the second knight is, this season is supposed to be all about nostalgia for early For Honor, so I wouldn't be surprised if their gear is based on a different knight from the early trailers.

Would love to see a "how to build' guild for Lore accurate Unsung Knight. Mostly what colors to use and what emotes and executions would best fit them. Maybe even do more Build Guides for the other Hero skins.

i guess since she's kind of a good guy something like "moment of silence" (the one where warden prays for a small moment after the execution) and maybe the quickest executions to minimising the suffering for the other person but i have no clue to be honest

Tbh i kinda like that the unsung knight doesn't have a name, gives the lore writers in the community the ability to write their own story with the skin :)

I really enjoyed the lore, but yeah i have the same problem with it that i had with Conquistador Vela. It didn't give enough story. I was hopeful to because They did so well with maddox. even though it was a short story there was enough there for maddox to feel like a story with a beginning, middle, and end while leaving it open to be continued through lore orders. Whereas with unsungknight (#unsungRuth) it just felt like beginning, and and the first phase of a middle. Heres hoping we get thick lore orders on this hero skin. I am very interested in knowing more of her tale

And to add my two cents I think in this part of the season, we are essentially fighting in the old war that Apollyon idealized the minions are now having their old models back and i noticed that I keep fighting with or against the knights on the defense all the time and might give credence to my theory that the war itself was always over Ashfeld's bountiful lands by their neighbors, that were given the Worst land to live on why would there be conflict over 1000 years for what? It was over clean water and great farmland in which Ashfield has in abundance(having a volcano certainly helps). The Vikings have to constantly raid to keep themselves fed in the Harsh unforgiving land of valkenium, and the samurai want to live anywhere else than the swamp that is the myre, a land of horrid disease and unstable land unfit for permanent settlement(the reason their population is so small compared to everybody else).

We are still qt the start of the season and within mid update next month we might get a second part to the lore and possibly one to where it ties into recruiting the next legendary (Hero skin) to joining the fight to protect Ashfield or a rival that believes the opposite or has more villainous intentions, but we'll see what happens next.

Idk if Valor's Edge is supposed to be a magical sword or not (I appreciate that they're leaving that vague), but I choose to imagine that it only allows the truly worthy to wield it, and/or refuses to harm the innocent.

i am not going to lie this season is great bout time knights get some love instead of hate but my question still is if were going back to cataclysm does that mean the other 2 people we saw will be hero skins ? if so then is the faction going to get a restart or at least an updated view

I agree that her story needed closure. It felt like it was the beginning of a hero's journey, starting as weak and vulnerable, finding a mentor, and then inheriting said mentor's sword and the spirit of his mission. But then... nothing, really. It needed the cherry on top to leave us an image in our minds of the warden she became after that. But Ill disagree on the topic of her name. If history remembered her identity as an individual she woukd not he "unsung". As a legend she is remembered by what she did, not who she was. She was remembered by her actions, not her name. So her identity as a human slipped away with time, and only stories of the warden carrying a legendary blade remained. I think thats perfectly befitting. She doesnt need a name.

@@RavenKnightYT Correct me if Im wrong, but I dont remember Ramiel being unsung in the way that the unsung knight was. Ramiel could be compared to the saints of old Christian myth. He was well known and famous in his age, an age where society was at its peak and there were scholars abd scribes to record his name and deeds. But the unsung knight didnt have that. She was just "the warden that saved my life" or "the warden that brought me food". She's not a historical figure written about in ancient records, she's a ghost. A character passed down through the memory and stories of those who were alive to witness her in an age without scholars or scribes to record who she was. The two are both myths, but they are not the same.

Just because you don't know the name of the Warden who saved your life, doesn't mean they shouldn't have one. Your argument was that she should be remembered for what she did, not who she was. My counterpoint was that this could be applied to Ramiel as well. He is a Warden that may not have even existed as his life and legacy were erased along with the Cataclysm, so why should he be called "The First Warden," or "The Dragon Knight," instead? That would speak to what he did rather than who he was. My point is not that you're wrong in any capacity. My issue is that if she doesn't need a name because she should be remembered for her deeds, then I think that should be applied to Ramiel as well.

Theres absolutely nothing wrong with us not being presented a name for the Unsung Knighy, and Ramiel having his name be front and center. The Unsung Knight is not the same kind of historical figure as Ramiel. One is a cultural hero from ages gone by, and the other is moore of an urban legend. Why try and force them both to run by the same naming convention in the game? Giving her a name wouldnt go as far as to ruin the character. But I feel like it kinda defeats the whole point of her being "unsung". Her name isnt remembered. And theres nothing wrong with being known only by that title in game. Its fitting, and I think it suits her aesthetic as well since she doesnt really look all that fancy. She's not some great mythical man like Ramiel. She's just a warden

Thats all that seems to be left of her. Her name isnt remembered. Only what she did. And even that seems to have slipped into non importance. Which is why she's unsung. We dont need her name, not having one fits the character concept much better in my opinion.

So they basically turned the knights into Mandolorians? This new character is Bo Katan and the sword to bring all the knights together under one banner. A legendary sword that's been passed down from warrior to warrior through the centuries. That's the darksaber.

Ramiel is an in-universe legend. He’s the mythical first warden, and is credited with founding the first legion. He’s long dead by the time of even the cataclysm.

I’m glad they added the armor but I don’t think her lore is great. she helped people just to help them….. woah ok….. during an apocalypse? I do wish they’d expand and make an open world game in the for honor setting. could be fun for a survival game or just an rpg. I do think the Ubisoft writers are pretty disappointing though but I feel they could do better.

Yes the lore sounds incomplete after watching your video reading it but I think you forgot there's a part 4 to the story. Now this is just my opinion I believe part 4 will give the conclusion of the story, so this is what I propose, if the ending conclusion doesn't meet your expectations of this story in the next video you make of this then please do make your own conclusion like the ending and what you said you'll do for fun how she felt about the samurai and Viking heroes who invaded ashfeld. Just wanted to let you know there's a part 4 coming out and what I believe you should do keep writing and reviewing later.

The best writing for honor had was the story mode. Everything after was getting worse. You should really get an employment in Ubisoft so there's finally some good writing in for honor.
