Been feeding raw for almost 7 years. Never looked back. It's a shame that most vets will try to instill fear with a raw diet and push toxic kibble instead. I told my veterinarian there's no way in the world that she is going to be able to convince me that a raw species appropriate whole food diet is healthier than processed kibble. If you understand how to feed raw that is because you can cause a lot of micronutrient deficiencies. I personally have helped over a thousand people transition to a raw species appropriate diet and only had positive feedback on what it's done for their dogs. Glad to see you giving Prince what his body needs 💪

lemme first say, big fan, love your work love your channell! i am from Europe and here is quite the opposite, the vets try to get people to feed raw but its so damn expensive that the average owner cannot afford it. With my first dog, a rottie lab corso mix, i had big trouble getting her to gain weight when she was younger and i was feeding her this canned food, comes in 1.25kg cans its meat with jello... would not gain weight to the point i got reported by some idiot that im not feeding her, went to the vet and she right away knew what the problem was, switched me to kibble, it did the trick, the dog was finally gaining weight but her energy was super low, at that point i finally reached a stable living situation so i started to look at her and how can i improve her energy and thats when i came by a local butcher, had a talk with him and he showed me what he does for his dogs, he makes these meat cubes from beef meat and freezes them, then he makes a risotto with veggies and said cubes and has great healthy dogs, so i tried that what, 5 years or so ago, and never looked back, now i can regulate her weight easily, and they are super healthy happy and energetic since i feed the same diet to both my dogs, i complement the risotto with a small portion of kibble (its super high protein and fat kibble i use it mostly for training and they each get only about a quarter suggested daily intake as like i said, its super strong kibble, you cant even buy it in stores because you need to be carefull with feeding that kibble as with overfeeding you can easily hurt your dog as it gives them shitloads of energy, our police uses this kibble for their dogs and even they dont feed just this kibble) and im happy with where my dogs are at, the older one is 9 yo and doesnt look a day over 4 and if you knew the life we had initially you'd be surprised we are even still alive at this point, let alone both thriving. Meat in EU, especially in my part, if you want quality is super expensive so people usually here dont go for raw feeding unless they know a specific butcher where they can get the right meat on the regular and for a normal price. I saw the prices you have in the US and canada and compared with my part of europe...a person on minimal wage with 2 dogs like mine would have to give at least 35% of his paycheck just to feed raw so you probably understand why people dont go for it, these cubes are the next best thing but as they are beef they are better cooked first and are not widely available anyway

You told your vet that she can never convince you that a raw, species-appropriate, whole-food diet is healthier than processed kibble? (See your third sentence above.) Do you mean she did eventually convince you? Or did you mean to write the opposite: that you told her she'd never convince you that kibble would be healthier? (Either way, good for you--and your dog!) I don't understand your 4th sentence either. Did you mean that NOT understanding how to feed raw can lead to micronutrient deficiencies? --Or is that what the vet will tell you? 🤷🏻‍♀️

@watchmoivies123 to build a proper microbiome dogs just like humans need variety. The gut needs it. No dog is to live on the exact same ingredients it's whole life and expect to be healthy. A raw diet needs rotation to cover its nutritional needs. Protein, organs, produce, probiotics and omegas all need rotation. Otherwise, over time, the dog will be deficient and will have problems.

@weedhigh2564
@weedhigh2564 3 ай бұрын
@@watchmoivies123 for the longest time it was believed that with kibble and other processed dog foods is best to get them used to one brand and use only that one, to not upset their stomach. While I was still ignorant and new to dogs I feed my now oldest dog canned food for the first year and she would not gain weight once she grew up she wouldnt bulk up while eating 2.5kg of food a day. So I started to do research into this and then I was even reported for abuse (not feeding my dog) from some idiot neighbour, which led me to switch to weight controll kibble which helped her gain weight while eating way less but had a big impact on her energy levels and I was not happy with it and neither was she. In that time I moved back home and that means no more city life, so first week back home I go to the local butcher, we talk dogs and he shows me these beef cubes he makes for his dogs out of beef leftovers, frozen raw. He tells me his recipe for a risotto he makes for his own dogs with veggies these meat cubes and rice and his dogs looked awesome, so then I took a few kg of these cubes and never looked back, now I make this risotto 2x week for both of my dogs, they are super healthy and always keep a healthy weight, super energetic happy dogs and they seem to love the food. To complement the risotto I give 1/5 portion of very high grade kibble ( I use it mainly to train as dogs love it and its super rich in protein and fat), I rotate veggies that are in season as we have a garden and my father is a hunter so I get loads of leftovers from deer and boar and such meats which I make either treats of or just give them a bit on top of dinner and use the broth I cook the game meat in as a soup to enrichen the risotto. The result is 2 super healthy and energetic dogs, the older one nobody can believe she is 9 years old, the most people guess is 5 so far as she has a super shiny coat and is very energetic she looks way younger than she really is. Gone are the cancers and health problems she initially had, she is cancer free for the last 5 years and the only health issue we had in these last 5 years was pyometra which was just unfortunate. But first few years, untill I started her feeding her like I do now I went from issue to issue, first the weight, then 2 histeric pregnancies, followed by 2 separate cancer growths not to mention her mental was way worse.

I’ve been raw feeding my 3 year old Dogue de Bordeaux since I got him as a pup (breeder even weaned him to raw.) He’s my second DDB I’ve fed raw and wouldn’t even consider feeding any other way. He’s strong, healthy and his teeth are kept naturally clean and white. It’s really a lifestyle- as I also stay far away from processed food- and not that complicated. I follow old school European dog breeders who simplify the process: raw meaty bones (I feed turkey and duck necks mostly), raw meat and green tripe. No need for complicated recipes or fruits/veggies or added grains in my opinion (the sugar can be detrimental.) Occasional raw goat milk or kefir and eggs. Keep it simple and fresh. ❤

Dr. Pitcairn’s book is where I learned about raw feeding. I had rescued 7 Llewellin Setters from a breeder gone bad. We had a meat market close, who saved all scraps for me in 5 gallon buckets. Added this to recipes provided in the above book. These dogs grew up to be so healthy, and happy it was amazing. They exceeded their breed standard in health and size. It’s a pain in the beginning, but started preparing in 30 day supply and it was much easier. There are chicken liver treats you can make that became their crack! Best high value training tools ever. Great episode. Raw feeding is also way cheaper in the long run.

Initially I argued in my head about the cost of moving to raw and then I confessed to myself that I was happy to indulge ME by spending money on what I like ($40 to $80 for a bottle of whisky or brandy - no problem. $30 to $60 for a KG of coffee beans - no problem. Bottled water FFS!) and it was kinda crappy to change the rules for my dog. After that honest conversation I just stopped thinking about the cost and did the good thing for my dog... the same way I do it for myself. "Raw" for pets is a pretty large sector in Australia. Our rescued GSD started on the kibble he was fed by his fosterer. Each step towards full raw diet we took we saw a very fast improvement in his coat health, which was the quickest way to judge that his nutrition had improved. These days we do full raw ourselves - on the basic principle that we focus on the long term variety rather than obsessing day to day balance. Yes, feeding raw is costly. It can be more or less costly but proper food SHOULD cost more than over processed crap as the over processed crap is ALL about the profit margin and not at all about the well being of our dogs. We have a lot of 'pre-packaged' raw companies who ship direct to your house AND there is a variety of pre-packaged raw available in the large pet store chains. We even have dedicated pet shops that are NOT part of a chain but who specialize in providing bulk meat, organs, bones, bird frames to pet owners. Anyone living in the big cities or large towns can probably get prepackaged quality raw pretty easily and 'direct shipped' to most places. (But Australia is a ridiculously large area with a tiny population so some country areas might struggle. Then again in the country you can probably get very fresh raw meat without much trouble.)

Hey, Joel 👋🏽 I totally agree with you about the roadwork issue, what they’re doing is not right 😐 I live in a rural city and they rarely do roadworks during the day here even though we’re on the lower socioeconomic end of the spectrum. It’s 100% disrespectful to do it like they are, and if they can pay law enforcement to be there just to drown people out with their horn, they can afford night time wages imo Doggo related stuff: It’s really awesome to see raw feeding moving into the more mainstream market! Thanks for getting Molly on here, and a huge thanks to Molly for coming on the podcast 😊🫶🏼 My dogs love kangaroo ears and paws with the fur and pads still attached, these are probably their favourite dried natural food, along with pig ears. My little Jack Russel mix absolutely decimated an emu foot I gave him too though and had to fast for a bit over a day lol 😂 Both my dogs intermittent fast following the 16:8 method. So for 16 hours straight they only have clear fluids and the other 8 hours they have their meals and training treats depending on what we’re doing that day. I eat this way myself so it just feels natural to feed them that way too. I also found a reference to the Kong toy dispensing machine Joel was talking about and how to DIY rig one since they aren’t made anymore: www.maplewooddog.com/dog-behavior/diy-automated-puzzle-toy-dispenser/

Living on 12 acres we’ve seasonally raised chicken, rabbits, and turkeys for the dogs. We dispatch and toss the whole animal. Any leftovers go to the nocturnal wildlife. And as we free range the birds, the dogs know not to touch any of the live birds and coexist just fine. In fact I taught my German shepherd to chase off the foxes that threatened the flock.

We boil up pumpkin, carrots, sweet potatoes and cabbage once a week. His meals are comprised of 50% these vegetables alongside a variety of meats. We keep our eyes open at the supermarket for chicken frames (the carcass after the meat has been removed) and "offcuts " of meat with bones in. We do buy commercial offal like kidney, liver, chicken crops, hearts, necks - usually near the sell by date at the supermarket. But the Chinese here in Australia tend to eat just about every part of the animal, slim pickings for the dog! We have a network of friends, every now and then we will buy feral grazing animals like kangaroo, emu, donkey and horse that are shot by farmers as a pest species here in Australia. We avoid wild pigs, and carnivore meat (feral dog, cat) and all feral offal to avoid parasites and we de-worm our dog regularly. We divide up the meat among us and freeze it. Bones tend to constipate him so he gets one every now and then because it's entertaining and cleans his teeth. First time I've heard of the weight bearing bone thing. We keep good quality (expensive) kibble as an emergency backup. The weight drops off your dog on this diet, and they have a great appetite. I suspect the pumpkin might be a bit sweet - he gets the zoomies after eating - we lock him out until he calms down to protect the furniture.

I'm so glad you made this podcast today. So many people don't feed raw and its so much better I fed raw for years before my girl passed. I had a guy hunting for me also and found him the same way she found some of her sources. Local Fb groups work also. It was a little bit of work but the reward was great their body absorbs all that is fed. You would have to figure out the amount of food you would need for your personal dog. I took leg bones also and would give her raw leg bones to clean her teeth. I never had to have her teeth cleaned ever. Raw diet is just amazing period and it's what they would eat in the wild. Barf diet. Bone and raw food diet. Great person to have on today for people to learn. I made 3 week batches Rotating protein Squirrel, deer and wild rabbit organ Greens veggies Lentils and lots of different fruits and more. It's just the way to go

That I don't know. I've never heard that before. But kinda makes sense. Sounds like so you make sure you're getting anything that maybe missing. I've seen vegan diet also in the past which the main ingredient for dogs is taurine then if no meat in the diet.
@OffGridDogs

@@watchmoivies123rotating the protein source makes sense when you consider the idea is to replicate what the animal was designed to eat in nature. Molly mentioned a couple of times that normally a carnivore’s diet changes seasonally as different animals become a part of their diet and that’s what you’re trying to replicate.

Another great podcast! Follow up questions on a couple of the raw food topics: 1. I was a bit surprised when Molly said that she fed pork ribs (if these were also raw) because pigs carry trichinosis, and this can be passed via raw or undercooked pork (this is why pork should always be thoroughly cooked). Or is there some way to kill the parasite without cooking? (I do know that other kinds of raw meat can carry parasites, but for instance freezing beef or lamb for 2 weeks will kill off parasites - I've looked into human raw food diets and that's my understanding). But trichinosis isn't killed off by freezing. 2. On the topic of feeding weight bearing bones - would like to hear Joel follow up on this. I've also heard the cautions against feeding these types of bones due to risk of teeth fractures, but it hasn't been a problem in my experience. I would think Joel would have heard of dogs breaking teeth on a marrow bone for instance since that's been his recommendation for some years now. I buy beef bones from a local farm for about $1.50/lb and my dogs love them, and there's a good amount of meat, fat and cartilage on them which keeps them busy for hours. To prevent my dogs from being too zealous (breaking a tooth) I give them the bones after a meal, so that they are not driven by hunger but more the fun of chewing. Also on the topic of wild canines chewing weight bearing bones, maybe it doesn't happen for smaller species like coyotes and foxes, but I'm sure wolves must chew on leg bones if they eat a deer or bigger animal, which also have dense bones. And I'm sure natural selection weeds out the wolves who break their teeth.

When i first wanted to get into fresh food and make a balanced diet i realized there was so much conflicting information that i really needed to understand things and i really nerd out now. I really want more people to feed real food be it gently cooked or raw. I haven't even finished watching this video yet but im super excited to listen. I always have a ton to say about dog nutrition and food i really enjoy the subject. I think its very accessible for people to afford a real food diet if they get the proper information

Yes, I'm one person in a sea of alternate opinions. I'm aware of a case where a raw diet dog got very sick, suspected salmonella, at my vet's office. Yes, just one, and there was no test available to prove what the dog had contracted. Just be aware things can happen and be thankful for modern refrigeration technology.

About food rotation: Rotating every week doesn't work for all dogs. My Dobie is pretty much allergic to chicken and pork. He'll get the relentless shyts on pork and chicken or ALL raw anything. So I give him half raw/half cooked muscle and organs with lots of broth and a little quality kibble for variety. But there are some breeds that for whatever reason, have sensitivities to some meats. Dobies in particular can have sensitive digestive systems.

Only thing I wish would have been covered are - should bones be removed? I know cooked bones are really bad but are raw bones, like in a chicken wing, just as bad? Also foodbourne illnesses - is this still a concern with dogs when feeding raw meat or eggs? I’m currently trying to transition my dogs to a raw diet, but these are my biggest concerns still because I just have just found differing answers online. So far, I only feed cooked eggs and things like canned chicken, salmon, tuna. But I would like to start to incorporate more raw meats and raw eggs (I have backyard chickens so thankfully able to collect fresh eggs daily).

there is some controversy about the inclusion of raw bone (usually in the form of ground bone) in raw diets. some people think ground bone fragments, even raw, can cause abrasions in the digestive tract. these people opt for things like eggshell or kelp calcium supplements or additions. some people say that too much bone can cause constipation. raw bones generally are not as dangerous as cooked bones--they're softer and don't splinter in the same way. i occasionally feed my mutt raw chicken legs and she is able to deal with those fine, but keep in mind this may present a choking hazard for dogs that don't chew. for pathogens, that's going to depend a lot on your sourcing and how you store & handle raw products. commercially available raw diets are typically very clean and many are batch tested before leaving the plant. the raw meat you're getting from the grocery store is being sold with the intent to be cooked, and thus may not be pathogens free. regardless, these pathogens are typically more dangerous for us than they are our dogs, as their digestive system is much better at handling raw meat as facultative carnivores. hope this helps!

Been feeding raw to my dogs and cats growing up, and just got a dog this past year. Paws of prey is a great channel on KZbin. I’m more lax then most people tend to be in feeding their dogs raw. My rule of thumb is to feed as much variety as I can. Seafood is something you should include regularly, and don’t over obsess over the nutrients in each meal. As long as you are rotating and adding different supplements over time, dogs will balance out their nutrients.

I made a promise to myself to feed my two pups only food that is raw (uncooked) and fresh (in chunks, not grinded) until they are at least 2 yrs old. They're 2 yrs old now, and I had huge resistance to switch to any other type of food (esp. kibble). Yes, it used to be time-consuming until I learned how to food prep (weekly). It used to felt cumbersome, until it becomes a ritual that I can focus on the joy of selecting and mixing the different ingredients. It used to felt expensive until I learned more about different proteins including the budget friendly ones, it is not much expensive even less expensive than the kibbles that their breeder used to give them. Thinking about long term health, I might want to keep fresh raw food for the rest of their life.
