WCW's War Games matches were generally loved by fans of World Championship Wrestling ever since they debuted in the late 80s. Beginning as a match type suited for The Four Horsemen, War Games matches that were held in WCW would eventually evolve into an annual event where faction would settle their differences. The Horsemen, the nWo, The Dangerous Alliance, the Wolfpac, all these groups took part in War Games matches.
War Games didn't take place in 1999 but the match did return in 2000. Held on an episode of Nitro for the very first time, War Games 2000 "Russo's Revenge" changed everything we knew about the match by using the Ready to Rumble triple cage. Vince Russo, in storyline, brought the match back as a way to get revenge on Bill Goldberg (and others who had wronged him) and the competitors featured Russo, Kevin Nash, Scott Steiner and Jeff Jarrett taking on Sting, Booker T, Goldberg, and Kronik. This video looks at what many consider to be the worst War Games match in World Championship Wrestling history.

Nash had honestly true common sense for the work ethic he put in, he always got paid the same money rather he was the World Champion or not and rather he put in a 5-star classic match or a lazy stinker. So he's in a huge cage match on free television with a buttload of others that he's booked to win, what does he do, stands outside by the door practically the whole time.

In a weird, Schadenfreude way, it would’ve been interesting to watch the slow decline of WCW live as it happened, as I’m very intrigued by 1999-2001 WCW, but can only watch it after the fact through the WWE network and wrestling channels on KZbin. Russo's real crime with this match was associating the "WarGames" label with this mess of a match, cause after this, there would not be another WarGames match for 17 years! A whole generation of wrestling fans never knew such an interesting match concept existed (partially due to WCW going defunct and Vince McMahon loathing anything from his competitors). Triple H had to fight tooth and nail to get another WarGames match approved for NXT, and even then, NXT is considered a developmental brand, so mainstream media wrestling fans are still waiting for a return of WarGames. Even though WWE, Impact Wrestling, and AEW tried their own spins with the Elimination Chamber, Lethal Lockdown or Blood and Guts, nothing can compare to the OG WarGames concept, and if anyone wonders why there have never been another match, Russo's the man to blame.

Despite how over booked this was I actually think there is a lot of potential here. I love the idea of using the triple cage as a MITB style gimmick match. 9 wrestlers compete to get to the belt above the three cages but you have to bring it down and exit the door to win. Having the second cage filled with weapons is a great idea too. You could really get creative laying out a match like this. It would work beautifully in wrestling video games too.

I also like the Triple Cage in theory. The problem however they all had regardless of booking is that the floors of the second and third levels were difficult to walk on. Maybe today it could be revived with something like those ringside platforms from the Elimination Chamber.

I saw this match as a kid and I remember loving it and being so upset when Goldberg came so close to winning. Thanks for digging this relic up. I could never remember when it happened.

Ready To Rumble was released on April 5th - 2000. Arquette won the WCW belt on April 26, THREE WEEKS after the movie came out. I'm sure it really helped ticket sales.

I hated the multi-stacked cages. Anything done in the upper cages just... lacked impact, and since they weren't actual rings, the workers couldn't really DO anything in them. It was spectacle for spectacle sake, but the three cage thing was actually a handicap to match quality.

Ryan I think you're the first one to ever cover the triple cage, does it not receive enough fan acknowledgment to be covered? Cause I agree with you. On paper this was BRILLIANT but execution.... well... it was WCW 2000, but yeah. love the channel man, looking forward to the next video.

Just imagine if ecw would had the budget to do this match early on. Where if your partner won you was number one contender for the strap next ppv. Imagine Shane Douglas and Chris candido vs rvd and Jerry Lynn or sabu a true unholy alliance for built up vs then tommy dreamer and sandman. Or sandman and raven guess that be better unholy alliance lol.

People keep saying "AEW is just like WCW" which is getting beyond old & annoying! If ANYONE out there is "like WCW" it's F'n WWE themselves! The last year alone has made Wargames 2000 & the entire final run of WCW look absolutely fukn brilliant in comparison!

See... this is the problem for me with a lot of Russo booking in general. ... why was this even a "Not Really War Games" match? Somehow, particularly in this era of WCW, the narrative was never there. Kane vs Undertaker, Inferno Match. Okay, this makes sense since the whole story is supposed to be about how Undertaker left Kane to die in a fire and Kane wants poetic revenge by setting Undertaker on fire. It's the build up, it's the reason, it happens. Mick Foley vs Rock in the Empty Arena Brawl. The feud had reached such apocalyptic levels it had been going beyond just "Wrestling". To the point where "I tried to pin him with a forklift" was coming up. It was billed as something where there couldn't be an audience because it was going to be that chaotic and insane. Makes sense. Then Russo goes: "We'll have a triple stacked cage match where you have to climb up the cages to get a belt then escape with it". ... why? There's a simple logic to cage matches. Usually because someone is cowardly and runs away and the other side wants to trap them for a beat down. I could even see the title set up if there was some case where say... the usually dumb angle of "Ha ha, I stole the championship belt!" thing was going on. Like people were getting torpedoed backstage and the belt stolen and it had been changing hands from thief to different thief to different thief. ... now... that didn't happen as I remember. Nothing like that which made sense. Also I was probably the only person who didn't see the backstab against Russo happening on Nitro. Honestly with the way things were booked, which seemed to be "What makes the LEAST possible sense?" for friends, factions, rivals, etc? I kind of legit expected him to help instead. I was the mark only because I thought it would make too much sense for the person who was beefing with Russo to betray Russo. And Russo didn't book like that. Though random side note... I kind of like "Ready to Rumble" as a guilty pleasure movie. I know it's not good... but I do enjoy watching it.
