Very impressive Jimmy. Being able to cast Trout Magnets (1 g) was my BFS goal, and some do it with success on small streams, but as long as a rod reel combo can handle 1.5 or 2 g I'm happy, and your setup achieves that goal.
@rawrfishing

This is sure an impressive reel and spool. If you want to achieve more distance, less and thinner line would probably get a few more yards! I don't think i would normally cast 1 grams either but that ice fishing jig at 1/16 oz got crazy distance compared to my other setups. I often throw 1/16 oz jigs with marabou feathers. So this is a win!

New discoveries come with testing both line and rods with every reel. The possible reason the heavier lures lost casting distance from previous tests is the lure weight was too heavy for the rod action. The rod was unable to cast the lure because it has too light of action. A more powerful action fitted for the lure weight will improve distance and accuracy.

I use braid on my daiwa alphas setup using 6lb sufix nanobraid with a 4lb flouro leader with fg knot. I may go 1 step further and make a dedicated trout setup with my 2019 alphas ct setup. You can get more distance with that trout magnet if you spooled a bit less line and used those japanese 3 lb sunline small game braid but those lines are super expensive.
@rawrfishing

that is probably going to be my final test whenever my line counter comes in. ANY DAY NOW lol... for now i'll just deal with this. line spooled up for trout fishing. dunno how many snags i'll get from them streams!

If you know your gear then do what you like. I actually thought braid was the one that damages light spools because it has no stretch. I don't use braid because tying a leader onto thin braid is difficult and most of my rods have micro guides and the knot barely passes through the tip.
@rawrfishing
@rawrfishing 4 жыл бұрын
I feel that both can damage the reel if they both have high drag. But I believe people use the example of where they put those rubber bands onto a watermelon and the more you put on it, eventually the watermelon would explode. I think because mono stretches during usage, when you reel it back in tightly, it will eventually shrink while at rest, causing it to squeeze the spool. i feel the same way about these tiny guides, but I have success with the tony pena knot and the FG knot. Or you just put 1 ft leader. in some waters, you don't even need leader. straight braided line will still catch! in the end of the day tho, i prefer Copolymer as it's a bit less stretchy than mono

@@rawrfishing I have 6lb mono on my Shimano Scorpion BFS and 8lb Fluorocarbon on my Daiwa Fuego CT converted to bfs. Why do I have such heavy line is I fish rocky creeks for Aussie Bass and Saltwater species like bream and whiting even small flathead. I challenge my gear to the max.
@rawrfishing
@rawrfishing 4 жыл бұрын
I would throw heavy lines too on BFS gears. I have no problems spooling on 6 lb mono/copolymer for most of my applications. 4lb is really for the distance with smaller lures. I often throw heavy enough lures that 6lb would work perfectly.

Good job Jimbo, I was also curious about the mono vs fluoro vs braid on the bfs spools. I've used all with no noticable issues, but I could imagine an issue if you you hook a big hard fighting bass with the drag too high while using mono. Keep up the great videos

"Spool half way filled"; it's better to fill the spool up vs "halfway" because physics says Centrifugal force can be increased by increasing either the speed of rotation [spool tension & brakes] or the mass of the body or by decreasing the radius [fishing line/spool diameter], which is the distance of the body from the centre of the curve. In layman's terms the more centrifugal force generated because of a decrease in the radius [spool line filled] the further lighter lures can go because these factors help them generate more force. BSF reels are already designed with these principles; large/ wide in circumference shallow spools that are heavily ported. It's all about less friction, less rotational mass and force [loading the rod] and all these things being balanced. I'm not a Pro but I like science and all the sponsored Pro's have science behind them.✌🏾 I love your channel, I'm just getting into BSF from the Ultralight scene.🤝🏾
@rawrfishing
@rawrfishing 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the physics schooling! I love science but never gotten deep into physics from my studies. That's interesting, I would love to play with more casting if I got more line laying around lol. Its interesting tho how many others suggests to reduce total spool weight. I guess there is a sweet spot somewhere in tween too heavy vs too light. Gotta find that balance based on spool diameter and brakes installed onto one reel? Hope you get your self some nice reels to play with and perhaps can help me understand some more so I can maximize my experience! 🙇‍♂️

@AlucardFeeds
@AlucardFeeds 4 жыл бұрын
@@rawrfishing I am not sure what I am looking for. $317 seems out of my current budget. I picked up fishing hoping it was going to be cheaper than shooting during covid but its adding up. Could you recommend a bfs for me. I currently have a 9wt 9ft fly rod, a 13 ft tenkara rod, and a collapsible medium fast 7'3" baitcaster. I used to live in FL where my fly rod was great, but I live in near Jill's and the tributaries have close tree cover and I can't figure out how to cast with it. So I bought the baitcaster thinking it would be fun. I nest a TON. so I thought simple would be best a rod and line, I just got it so I am not the best yet
@rawrfishing
@rawrfishing 4 жыл бұрын
sounds like a lot of moving parts here. I think you first need to determine what exactly you want to throw. that dictates the setup you need to get. Like fly fishing, you wouldn't use a 4 wt rod/line for a _lure_ fly that is made for 9 wt. Baitcasting reels are not that bad once you figure out how to configure it. you should try first playing with your setup and use lures that the rod recommends. Likely your reel isn't BFS, so don't try anything light. I have a video that explains how to configure your reel to cast maximum distance. here you go: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZOVoHhrh6-fi6s. A lot of homework before you go spend money on BFS gears.

I feel that casting distance, although is something important to most anglers, but I don't think it isn't the most important thing when it comes to fishing. Smooth casting, accuracy and less fatigue over distances for me! I don't think i would normally throw a trout magnet to begin with on BFS gears. Just doing it as everyone is so fascinated with it. Perhaps my opinion will change once I upgrade the bearings and have the right rod to do the job for maximum distance. BTW, your suggestion have been considered and a line counter tool have been ordered twice.. first one never came and 2nd one is in route. In the mean time, listen to what I say in the video. You get more than just OH, AMAZING, SUGOI DESU NEE, WOW, HOLY SMOKES... I actually tell people the casting distance via estimated percentage from where I stand to the water fountain, Which I have also mentioned the distance between where I stand and the water fountain! :P
