Excellent review norm. Thankyou. I would have preferred more discussion on from the privacy side. Meta lisfening in etc. And the laws about even using these in public and with kids etc. And who is writing the ai script and how do we know the info we're fed is even accurate or a hallucination or some agenda. The problem is meta has a nefarious history and track record then and now of abusing customer data and selling our privacy. I worry that if they're behind this awesome tech those if us who opt out as with the net will still be monitored and sold by the minions of meta who opt in....

The inability to control the shutter speed for the reasons you mentioned is a huge downside, along with the lack of horizontal video. Hopefully the next iteration will offer these options.

As someone that lives in SEA, i wonder how will the contact points for charging will fare against the constant sweat and humility of the tropics, if the prescriptions lenses gets dirty, can we use water and lil detergent to clean the lens without shortcircuiting it?

I have these and battery is rarely a problem. There is an easy to access switch to flip them on when you want audio,, video or ai and they power up and pair very quickly. When powered off they function just like normal sunglasses still

Actually, I somewhat agree if you plan on using these as your primary glasses. But for me, I just use them as sunglasses, and I haven't run out of battery yet.

Given my personal preferences and needs, I find the utility of these glasses to be limited. While the integration of audio capabilities, picture/video recording, and smart features into sunglasses is innovative, the absence of an augmented reality (AR) display diminishes their appeal to me. Without this feature, they do not align with my expectations for such advanced eyewear.

Great video and I agree these feel like regular Ray Bans and not some odd techie wearable. I only use them in the default sunglasses option, but when I'm out and about, I'm really loving them. And best of all they look good and feel great. I only wish they had a 2nd camera for 180 degree VR stereoscopic video capabilities. Oh well, maybe Gen 3 will have that feature.

With the cameras I only want beam splitters and such to get an AR Hud. Google Maps has a nice feature when you're walking around. You hold your camera up and it shows you where to go, even displaying giant arrows when you need to turn. Imagine seeing that in your glasses. That's all I'm saying. Also maybe just a map, time, notifications, Health points and bullets in your gun visible all the time in the corner would just be amazing! Probably drains the battery like crazy though

I wish the glasses used a physical camera cover. The creepy part of smart glasses is the exposed lens where people can't tell if they are being recorded. I also wish this was like some sort of dash cam. As a pedestrian and cyclist, I can never remember license plates of cars that almost hit me.

@gaber1807 It's kinda like how a phone camera has no recording light. People are alert when someone starts pointing a phone at them even though they might not be recording. If there is an uncovered lens, it is assumed to be recording regardless if there is a recording light. It's similar to people who put tape over their laptop cameras.

As a person with ASD, I have great difficulty with cameras and such that are 'in my face' as it were. I have no problem with cameras in stores like in the supermarket, but am not okay with cameras at the checkouts right in my face. They make me feel invaded and are triggering. Smart glasses like these present another way to have ones privacy violated. The fact that people don't notice someone wearing a pair of these suggests that they would not note the tiny light on them when recording and imaging. Thanks for the review as always Norm and tested, but these are not a great tech with the camera function.

I’ve been using the Bose Frames for 3 years now. Had a Bose Frames Alto, enjoyed the upgrade to the Bose Frames Tenor and am currently in awe of how much better a new Tenor I got sounds, even though it looks like Bose has stopped making them. It looks like a really well received and reviewed product, I believe they are just working on new ones. I’d love to hear about how they compare to these Meta ones audio-wise, even though I can’t use the Meta because they don’t make it for prescriptions higher than 5.

As someone who used to manage a Best Buy, the issue is also sales numbers. Bose didn't really move too many units, definitely less than they'd have liked anyway. Even if you've got rave reviews from almost everyone who bought them, it doesn't end up counting for much if that demographic is so small. I think you'll see them revised and returning, but probably not for another few years. They were a little ahead of their time and the design could definitely use a little revision (in terms of looks, functionally they're pretty decent but they do kinda look like fake Dollar Store glasses)

When the tech looks "cool" (or at least "normal"), that's when you know they're serious about bringing it to market. The light indicator seems like something that could be worked around via jailbreaking and software revision. Same with the video time limit (which seems odd anyway).

I'm actually wearing glasses that only have the audio and it works pretty much exactly the same way as described here. It's called the Revel Tune and they look pretty similar. I used to use them to listen to music at work, but the left side audio and mic stopped working a few months in and now it won't hold a charge. Also it has a weird proprietary magnetic charger. I'll probably get another one when I can afford it and leave it unfolded when I charge it at night.

K.... so I put my head down on the table and it went from perfectly fine to the same problem. I'm gonna test their "warrenty"now but on afraid the sunglasses hut around me have no idea how to deal with I read the policy is 50% outside of warranty... which sounds about right as I've had a fossil hybrid watch go bad after a year and a store knowing the policy and giving me an appropriate discount on a similar watch. Time will see

I was able to get the 2nd roll out of Google Glass, my friend who was one of the first 10K beta was able to invite 3 people and I used them for about 2 years before the broke. Like your experience, the audio and camera was the best use case, the HUD was poor but was decent for notifications. I'm not reconsidering this an an alternative to earbuds if I can make a pair work as an alternative to reading glasses that I am now dependent on.

My question is why does he expect anyone to comment if they noticed? It's generally understood that those who wear glasses have to change them regularly as their prescription changes and/or the frame wears out. These have a similar look as his old pair, so I likely would have noticed, but assumed these frames were the closest replacement he could get to his old pair's style...and that's it. No need to comment on everyone's personal style. That said, the cameras are def creepy.

Great thorough review! What did you think of the app? Is the app lacking anything? I wish the glasses would record landsape 16x9 mode. The aspect ratio they are using seems like pre 1990!

I asked the meta assistant what 20x1 was, and it replied that it was 200.. I was confused, so I asked again and it again said 200.. Then I said, "That's not correct." and it replied "Sorry, you are correct, 20x1 is 20" So weird, and don't trust its math functions. Today is the first day I got to use mine (just got them), and its pretty cool. I'm not on the beta, so my functionality is limited, and I am looking forward to the updates, or getting on the beta.

I ended up getting the translucent blue frames with transitions lenses, so they're great indoors and darker out side. The glasses are comfortable and non invasive. Listening to music is awesome, especially if you are doing something that requires audio awareness like walking a dog or riding your bike. I never use noise cancelation in those instances. The case is great, they're stiff enough to protect the glasses and holds 8 charges. Def a premium looking device and after my insurance deductible went through these were the same cost as a regular pair of glasses. Off loading images and videos to my iPhone is easy, not like Norm described. Seems to be near seamless to me. Battery life has been no issue for me and I did take Norm's suggestion and turned off Hey Meta.

So, I just got these for my wife and she loves them. But I have a question I can't find being addressed anywhere yet. If you select the option to have your photos automatically backup to your phone, will the glasses automatically delete old photos and videos to make room if your storage gets close to being full? We have hers set up to auto sync the pictures and videos she takes to her phone and we added that folder on her phone to the list of folders that gets automatically backed up to Google Photos. We also selected the option to automatically delete photos and videos older than 30 days in the meta app. Everything works great so far. But there doesnt seem to be a way to check how much of the 32GB onboard storage is remaining. So what happens if she uses up the 32GB before the 30 days? I'd hope since there isnt a way to verify how much storage is remaining that it would start deleting older pics and videos to make room. Do you know?

Just delet on the meta app when it says it's full. Select delete meta only, the other choice says delete both phone and meta

The concept is of course really interesting and could be amazingly useful when the services mature enough and if performance was sufficient. It would be cool to for example be able to access a drawing, technical reference etc while working on something, or even better, say an AR system where you for example can get an overlay when working on a motor, a suspension or similar and that overlay can give details on how to disassemble/assemble parts, identify components and their functions and so on. As in, you look at a car motor and you can immediately get info on what a tube or cable is for, where it goes, specified voltage or pressure. All of this is of course a ways into the future, but I’m sure it will get there. Ruggedness is the final part that needs to improve for some of us; I could never use a pair that can’t take heavy dirt, water and some rough handling in my day to day life.

I wear these on top of my head while I'm at work. Everyone thinks they are just sunglasses on top of my head. Little do they know, that I'm listening to music. That's the true advantage of these glasses. You don't need the app, if you just pair them through bluetooth.

Crazy that this video dropped today! I legit just ordered these yesterday at LensCrafters! My only issue is the 60 sec only recording. I hope with a firmware update, they'll increase it to like 5 or even 10 mins. If the glasses can livestream(720) for longer than 1 minute, then, aside from storage, there shouldn't be any reason why they topped to only 1 minute. Excited to get these when they come in!

Even with the short comings, I love them. I use contact lenses, and I bought the transition lenses type. So, I can wear indoors and outdoors. Even walking at night when is windy to avoid dust on the contacts. The pics are okay. Videos are better. I'm still having a blast taking pics/ vids while walking around in Manhattan without having to use a cellular all the time.

Absolutely! Portrait oriented cameras need to be avoided at all costs for the sake of a quality internet.

Expect sound to be transmitted through the auditory bone. Can other people nearby hear calls or music? Can it be paired with an Apple Watch cellular just to make calls and listen to music?

Not a bone-conductive speaker. The speakers are small and located above your ear. If over 75% volume, others can hear. Otherwise no. I haven't tried a Watch, but they work well to take calls. Tap on the arm to activate/answer.

I realized from the video that they would be speakers instead of bone-conductive, but I EXPECTED it to be, taking into account the price/brand. =/ Through the video, I also realized that the call quality is good, but I wanted to know if it is possible to Bluetooth pair with a device (such as the Apple Watch) that does not have the native Meta application.

For me, the biggest barrier for this technology is that my work place will prohibit the use of them. That accounts for a significant part of my waking life and means they can never replace my day to day glasses. The second sociological issue I foresee is that while the number of adults is significant (broady 70% or so), the number of young adults wearing glasses day to day is about half that (35%) (figures are obviously approximate). Unfortunately that means your tech-savvy early adopter crowd is less likely to make the technology fashionable. P.S. Love your reviews, Norm.

Yup... Smart glasses to me put directions in the hud, show me reviews of restaurants I'm outside, remind me the names of people I've met before These are earbuds with a cheap camera.

My son is legally blind. He has no vision in one eye and about 30% in the other. This occurred from a version of lymphoma he had as a child that crushed his optic nerves. I am very interested in the use of glasses like these that could feed video to a portable A.I. device to help with everyday tasks. Just throwing this out there for those that can help.

If all they do is record video and take pictures to share on social media I don't get the smart of it cuz it's not like the Google lens or anything similar where you are getting information about your surroundings on the glasses themselves.

He actually said "they didn't even notice the notification" which seems even worse than it already is. If the hidden-camera glasses BY THE PEOPLE WHO ARE NOTORIOUS FOR SPYING ON USERS wasn't going too far, then the lack of any notification for anyone other than the user pushes it clean over the line.

I was thinking more along the lines that it doesn't clunk up the frame of the glasses. Obviously if I were to film, I would let others know, but I like the idea that his kids will have videos of them being completely themselves to show back to them when they are older. I'm very camera aware, too.. for me it's matter of building up self confidence. Not because I don't like cameras.. I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder 😄

Kinda don’t like the fact that it shows the light when taking pictures/recording. In some cases it’s important that a person knows they’re being filmed, but in other cases someone would’ve been able to use it to prove something like domestic abuse in a divorce case or something and if the person knows they’re being filmed it can be a problem… but I get too that this isn’t for “spying” but for live streaming and content creation. Also kinda disappointed in the battery life and the fact that videos can only be up to a minute long… I’d use it to film a project I’m working on and then speed it up in an editor, but I can’t do that if the camera only films up to a minute.

Ngl, if these just had the speakers and a mic I'd get a pair immediately. I love having music in the background and being able to make calls w/o holding my phone. I already use Sony's Linkbuds for that but those get kinda uncomfortable after a few hours because they're just hard plastic

They do have phone call and messages capabilities. Anything you can do with a pair of earbuds, you can do with these. The only drawback is that if there is alot of wind you may have a hard time hearing someone talking. However, the other person can hear you perfectly.

Watching this, listening through my Wayfarer's while they're connected to my computer. Technology is wild. I will agree that the shutter speed could definitely be improved. The image quality in general seems comparable to my Galaxy S21 which isn't terrible. For someone with ADHD who utilizes visual lists more than written lists, it's already been useful.
