The official audio for Ray Charles' "Blues In The Night" from the TRUE GENIUS boxset
"Blues in the Night", written by the great Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer, is a jazz standard, considered part of the Great American Songbook. Ray Charles' gorgeous version, from this 1979 album Ain’t It So, is a further testament to the song's timelessness. The song has been covered by greats like Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald and Judy Garland. Only fitting that Charles should add his name to the list. his is the first time this track has been made officially available in over a decade.

LYRICS:
My mama done told me, when I was in knee-pants
My mama done told me, "Son,"
She said, "A woman'll sweet talk and give you the big eye
But when that sweet talking's done
A woman's a two-face
A worrisome thing that leave you to sing the blues in the night"
Now the rain's a-falling, hear the train a-calling
"Whooee"
Hear that lonesome whistle blowing across the trestle
"Whooee!"
A-whooee-ah-whooee, old clickety-clack's
A-echoing back the blues, yeah, in the night, mhm
The evening breeze will start the trees to crying
And the moon will hide its light
When you get the blues in the night
Please, take my word, the mockingbird will sing the saddest kind of song
He knows things are wrong, and he's right
Well, from Natchez to Mobile, oh, from Memphis to St. Joe
Wherever the four winds blow
Hey hey, I've been in some big towns, and I've heard me some big talk
But here is one thing I know
A woman's a two-face
She's a worrisome thing that'll leave ya to sing the blues in the night
Ooh-woo-woo, ooh-woo-woo
My mama was right
It just ain't nothin' out there but the blues in the night
Well mama, well mama, you told the truth, you did
You see, I know 'cause
Well, I've been in some big towns, heard me some big talk
Woo-hoo, oh, here is one thing I know
I don't mean no harm but it's the truth, yeah, it is
Listen, a woman'll sweet talk, give you the big eye
Well, oh, ha, but when that sweet talk got done
Look here, I got to tell ya
You see, she's a worrisome thing to leave you to sing the blues
Oh-ho, the blues, yeah, in the night
Oh oh oh, one more thing
She can make me tremble, she make me tremble in something like this
Do it, band

What a performance! I once saw Ray perform in the downtown square of my hometown. It was pandemonium with 35,000 people trying to get a glimpse of the master!

This is the best version of “Blues in the Night” that I’ve ever heard. Ella Fitzgerald’s 1961 version is also wonderful! But Ray did this extremely slowly and made it hurt so good!

Ray Charles. Never went to music school But he is obviously extremely learned in application of jazz chords. To connect the mundane blues. Progression with plateau of elevation that is unparalleled infusion

Highly over rated... not a genius by any stretch, so many substantially better singers and piano players that have toiled without the silly misplaced adulation that this 2nd rate performer undeservedly acquired. IMO.

Fellow Musicians disagree while your entitled to your opinion that's pretty damn good endorsement . If you set it to Ray he'd probably smile like in the interview and say some people don't like you ☺️ get your ears checked boy that's all me ✌️🕯️

@@Lindberg1984 Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it was Frank Sinatra who coined that nickname for Ray.
