Even though I'm from Cincinnati, I never was a Bengals fan. When I was in Pittsburgh, I asked a Steeler fan do they look at The Cincinnati Bengals as a rival, and he told me "no". Yes, they are in The AFC North Division, but until The Bengals bring a Super Bowl to Cincinnati, and beat The Steelers more often, The Pittsburgh Steelers will NEVER......NEVER, EVER, EVER respect The Cincinnati Bengals.

My point is Steeler football has been a physical brand since the 70's. Secondly The AFC North is the direct descendent of the AFC Central and what team set the standard in that division? The Steelers with physical football. So there is NO way the Ravens set the physical standard as a new franchise.

Respect given to Ray Raven, Ed Reed, Suggs, but no self respecting Steeler fan considers ANY Raven above Franco, Troy, Joe Green. The Steelers of the 90s set that tone before Ray Lewis was there. Yes it was AFC Central, but that was the tone. Maybe you heard of guys like Greg Lloyd, Carnell Lake, Rod Woodson, Jason Gildon. Big hitters. That came from Cowher. It started in the 90s. This is not a slight on Ray Lewis, it was just that the tone was set in the 90s. Greg Lloyd was not "Wasn't Hired for His Disposition." Even their secretary hit.

Saying the Ravens invented the physicality the Steelers had to react to is straight up ignorant. As if the Steel Curtin hadn't established that tradition and Kevin Greene, Rod Woodson and Greg Lloyd didn't continue it. Not to mention the Ravens Were the Original Browns team. Speaking of Eddie George and physics, his rookie year made the mistake of going head to head with Casey Hampton 300+ nose tackle and lost. Love and respect that Raven D of 2000, but lets be realistic, the Steelers created that atmosphere since the 70’s with Mel Blount and Co. The 5yd rule was because of Blount, Steelers have always prided themselves on this style of play.🖖

Chris Stewart I like those physical games too. Add some vertical game and tough running and that’s football perfection. I grew up watching ‘70s football. It was ok to admire civilized warfare. Today people are hypocrites. The Crabtree/Talib fight got a lot of bad press because it was premeditated and because half the players on the field got out of hand. But it probably also got more KZbin hits than anything else that week. Btw, I’ll take the Raiders/Chiefs Thursday night battle as game of the year.

All due respect to Ray Lewis, but the AFC Central was tough and brutal going all the way back to the 70's. The Browns and Steelers rivalry was intense long before the Browns turned into the Ravens. The Steelers had a league changing defense before the Ravens did. Even in the 90's under Cowher, the Steelers had Blitzburgh. I'm not diminishing Lewis's status as one of the all time greats who dominated his era, but he did not make the AFC North what it is today. Those seeds were planted long ago.

A dirty hit is one when a DB launches himself for the head or lower body. What refs don't understand is most of the time what they call "dirty" is actual good and clean. There's so little reaction time offensive player have to evade a hit/tackle that there are bound to be unintended collisions.

Ray Lewis was great but the afc north was physical way before he got there. Smh. Come on. The steel curtain. Browns vs Steelers before 1999. Earl Campbell. Someone dock this fools pay.

Steelers set the tone in the division in the 70's. All due respect to Ray but he didn't start it. Maybe reignited it.

Fella you have it completely backwards. Ray Lewis has said himself. They wanted to be physical like the Steelers. So they tried to become the Steelers.

The physicality came from the Steelers. Ray Lewis referred to Greg Lloyd as "s monster" That's who he was immulating. That Steeler hater is true to form. Give credit where credit is due!

Absolutely one of the most ridiculous statements ever...to say that ray Lewis and the Ravens set the tone for the physicality of the AFC north is ridiculous...the Steelers defense Was stacked threw the 90s and 2000s.. let's not forget that blitzburg was smacking around the Ravens when the were the Brown's.. The Steelers defense made the North.. and while every team in the north starts there season goals out to beat the Steelers... We start the season goals out to win a championship..I respect the Ravens but to say they were the reason for become today's black and blue division it the most ridiculous statement ever.

You are high man. Steelers were physically dominant before the ravens were a team. Don't forget that. You remember cower power. Greg lloyd meeting Kevin green at the qb. Jason gilden, lavon Kirkland, man it was Pittsburgh that started this.

You notice how the all of the AFC North's biggest rival is the Steelers? The steelers are the daddy of the division. They want to dethrone them. The bengals, browns, and ravens don't have that kind of magic against each other but they all do against Pittsburgh.

The physicality if the division was started by the Steelers datiing back to the 70s and it never stopped. John Harbaugh said he built his team to be abke to beat the Steelers. Idk what this guy is talking about.

The history of the AFC North is Steelers 1970s-2010s...Ravens had some seasons but they HAD TO MATCH Pittsburgh...They sit there and prop Ray Lewis they forget Greg Lloyd Levon Kirkland, Kevin Greene, James Harrison, Joey Porter........Seriously Steelers set the tone in the AFC division they've played in since 1974.
