Never ceases to amaze or come up with new and interesting drumming. Ray really sits at the top of the best drummers in the world. I don't know if he can do 200 bpm on double bass. Really, why would you want to, it's not a race? His syncopated bass drum patterns that groove with the song are the true "art" of double bass drumming. (and how long is that freaking bass drum anyway? lol!)
@Virvum_Juggernaut11 күн бұрын
Man, Ray is a professional session drummer by trade (evidenced by his perfect meter, quality rim-shots, his strokes landing in exactly the same spot on each drum head every time and his ability to accurately replicate the nuances of every percussion accent in every song, whenever repeated. However, he cannot perform 32nd notes on double bass or complex double bass patterns … simply because those techniques are not necessary aspects within his style of music. Please refrain from diminishing the peerless skill level of feet chops displayed by the elite extreme metal drummers of the world. It takes many years of constant practice and a healthy dose of natural talent in order to master ultra-fast double kick work. “Why would you want to?” It’s a passion for some and they’re pushing the boundaries of what’s humanly possible on a drum kit, even inventing their own techniques in which to accomplish the feat of hyper-express double kick speed (e.g. swivel technique & heel-toe double strokes). Super-speed combined with complex technicality is not only the most difficult to excel at, it’s also an inherent factor of brutal tech death music and the very reason for fans like myself having gravitated to the genre (I.e.) It is their signature style. I appreciate all musical styles of every accomplished pro drummer, liking the separate ingredients of uniqueness which they all bring to their respective genres and as a decent death metal drummer myself, am cognisant of the skillsets required for each. Ray is a more technically sound and colourful drummer than David Silveria was, but I love David’s drum compositions for KORN also, as well as his signature power grooves. What sets extreme metal drumming apart is the fact that no other form of instrumentalism is more physically or cerebrally demanding than extreme metal drumming. I wish dudes like yourself wouldn’t be so biasly dismissive of their ortherwordly capabilities simply because it’s not your listening preference. Every top-tier musician should be respected for their contributions to their chosen field of expertise and for mastering their specific musical instrument. Like Ray Luzier, Darren Cesca (drummer on the latest DEEDS OF FLESH album ‘Nucleus’) also earned a degree in music. He studied for 8yrs at Berkeley College of Music and one of his mentors at the time was former DREAM THEATRE drummer Mike Mangini … now Darren has been invited back as a mentor. My point is that his love for extreme metal drumming, playing fast and technical drum tracks does not deem him to be less musical or non-creative in any way, shape or form. These dudes are all at the top of their game. Edit : BTW two bass drums were originally introduced in order to facilitate faster successive bass drum notes by incorporating the use of both feet, so in actuality, speed is “the true art” form of double bass prowess.
