God used the squirrel to bring justice and god/jesus back into the church, the lyrics ironically say it with “First self righteous” Self righteous means people who believe they don’t need gos or Jesus because their actions on earth means they’ll always be saved

The great thing about Ray Stevens' songs is they are/were always family friendly so a lot of us actually grew up on these songs. It is something that both kids and adults can enjoy.

Ray Stevens is one of the most creative and talented people in the country. His Gitarzan is a masterful composition. In the song the monkey does a boogie woogie bass line. Gitarzan does the Tarzan yodel IN TUNE to the accompaniment of some bluesy 7th chords. Jane does her soulful "Baby!" and they are all done separately. At the end they all come together in a blended performance which is really funky.

Ray has a beautiful singing voice that on full display in his wonderful song "Everything is Beautiful". Personally, I wish he had produced more songs like that but he enjoyed making songs like this one. He spent some time on the TV show, Hee Haw, and just seemed to love making people laugh. I can't fault that at all.

Ray Stevens is a country & pop singer-songwriter & comedian known for his novelty hits such as "Gitarzan", "Ahab The Arab", "Along Came Jones", "The Streak" and others. But he also did a few serious songs such as "Misty" & "Everything Is Beautiful" which he won a Grammy for in 1970. Home Free recently did a fun cover of this song "The Mississippi Squirrel Revival". Hope you check it out.

I love everything that Ray Stevens did. His songs are so clever, and he picked up on some of the social events of the time. The Streak was written in maybe 1973-74, and it was a thing. Someone streaked on the Academy Awards show that was not planned. Someone I graduated with who had a scholarship at Memphis State to play football got caught streaking, and he was on the Johnny Carson show for it. Others are "It's Me Again, Margaret", "Ahab the Arab", "Along Came Jones", "The Haircut Song", "The Shriner's Convention", "Sitting Up With the Dead" and a gazillion more worth listening too.

For me, the reason it's so funny, is because if you grew up in the South and attended a small church back in the 70s or 80s, this could have actually happened! I love in the video where the woman that he husband's name got named has him by the EAR coming out of the Church. Ray has such a unique ability to turn things into such hilarious songs and videos. I remember hearing this when I was very very young. My father was a stern man in many ways, Vietnam Vet turned a very religious and conservative preacher, but occasionally his since of humor would show. When we would go on road trips we would listen to ray Stevens, beach boys, Eagles and Red Sovine (who sang Teddy Bear). We would listen to them on old cassette tapes in the car while we drank R.C. cola with peanuts. Man, those were the days. Music like this is just good for the soul. Especially when it can tie you to your childhood and take you back to happier times.

In 2019 my husband and I were in a road trip through the south and planed to drive along the gulf coast. This song is on our playlist as we both were raised hearing it played in our homes growing up. We love it. On our trip we started seeing freeway signs for Pascagoula. We joked about stopping there to check it out. The closer we got we decided we HAD to do it! We are LDS and we found on the building locator that there is a ward building in town! We stopped and took a picture of us in front of the church and shared it with our families on GroupMe. It made for some really funny conversations! 🤣 That silly little side trip off the highway is one of our best memories of that trip! Pascagoula is a cute little town! ❤
