As a former designer on the F1 franchise (2010-2016), thanks for the trip down memory lane. We had a small, tight knit, and dedicated team back then, each of us a fan of Formula 1, who put in hours and hours to try and make the best games that we could. Admittedly we got some things wrong, but it seems we also got a hell of a lot right. It's heartwarming to hear that games my teammates, many of whom are still amongst my favourite people in the world, and I helped create are actually loved by so many people. Oh it did, but mainly in the racing and simracing scene........and let's just say the reaction wasn't good. We know how EA fucks up franchises, and now they have F1, Dirt and via SMS the Project Cars Franchise. Well the latter messed up already with Pcars 3, claiming it would be a good sim and then giving everyone a bad arcade game, that was even graphically a downgrade from Pcars 2. I mean I could understand to a degree that they went "fuck this!" after a lot of the hardcore simracers went "Pcars is not a sim" for Pcars 1 and 2...but at least they could've made a good game and be honest to us. Interestingly Pcars 2 is the game/Sim that does all that Raycevik wants of it, Lobbys are easy to set up, you can run a ton of regulations (from Open wheel F1 style, Indicar to GT and Classic Racing to Rallycross) it's easy to congfigure, the menues are better and easier to use, and even have mouse support. And it even looks better, despite coming out in 2017, with great performance both in 2D and VR, as well as a weather and track simulation that blows F1 clear out of the water. FFB when set up properly (just get a custom FFB file like Christiaan's Pure feel) that beats the living crap out of F1. It's easier to drive on the limit with all assists off than F1, nevermind with them on. Assetto Corsa has the reputation as the best sim, which I don't fully agree with, but setting up a lobby or server in it is the most pain-in-the-arse-backwards way you can imagine! Pcars 2, you set the lobby up, name it, choose the track, set the class (either same car, same class or multiclass), choose the rules (presets included), then weather (preset, multiple presets, real, dynamic), time/date (yes the season has an influence on weather and temps), oh and if you want just a race or full race weekend. Boom, all done in under a minute. AC.....oh brother! Choose track, time (unless modded no nightime), track, weather (no rain unless modded) and car. And here the pain starts, because you have to add every single repaint that you want to race into that. Not just the car as in Pcars, nope you have to add every repaint individually! And stay the hell away from the stock rules! Nobody uses them as they are the most stupid ones possible....I've done endurance races in it, and they used their own Apps/plugins to get better rules. I can understand that AC puts him off that, because AC has the worst lobby setup of all sims, not even old rfactor or GTR2/Race07 are that annoying. Oh and they have a single point tire model, beaten by every other sim, but don't you dare point out that some other sims, even the dreaded Pcars2 are better than in some regards the holy Assetto Corsa! Edit: On the other hand in the time that I have played both Pcars 1 and 2, Asetto Corsa and Asetto Corsa Competizione as well as AMS 2 now Codemasters has released 6 F1 Games each costing between 35-60 Euros, depending on where you get them. So it costs 180-360 Euros. Even Pcars2 Deluxe Edition is cheaper at 70-79 Euros for all the content and got updates, just not as long as it should. AC was patched over 4 years until it was pretty good, and I bought all the DLC so in the end I spent around 100 Euros on it, plus some third party cars. ACC got updates and addons and went from broken mess to a good sim in two years, and still cost me less of a fraction. Codemasters does upgrade their sim, but the old content does not get updates, you can play the old seasons in the new upgraded version, and each yearly update costs 35-60 Dollars.
@CrispyGFX3 жыл бұрын
Probably paid off. Most people who buy sports games don't give a shit who the developer is, anyway. They just want to spend $60 for the game so they can spend a thousand more dollars in microtransactions every year.

I dunno about the general public, but "over here" in the Sim Racing niche it's been an ... interesting topic. We very much expect in the future you'll have to pay for every pitstop or somesuch. And will get a loot box at the end of every race. But the only good ones are the ones you pay via subscription. Y'know, the usual cr@p EA pulls. Grid and PCars were already broken, and Dirt didn't do so well. So F1 was the only cash machine for Codemasters anyway. And we all were horrified by the Codies getting the WRC license. Imagine how horrified we are that it'll now be WRC! The EA FRANCHISE! NOW WITH MONSTER TRUCK CROSSOVER! (or something like that...

Damn forgot how bangin' the 2015 soundtrack gets, but 2010's is sublime, Ian Livingstone strings are just beautiful! On 2009 though, the game is dog shit, but that stop me with only access to Wii sinking 3 seasons into it's career mode; my most distinct memory from it was a 25% race around Sao Paulo in the Wet in Career mode, in a heated championship battle, so 18 laps, the HARDEST race I have ever had to do! Why? Let me explain: So in F1 2009 if you used the Wii mote as wheel like in Mario Kart, it meant your throttle input was the "2" button, so it meant if you're a masochist like me and played without traction control, if you didn't manically spam the throttle button accelerating out of low speed corners, you would just get pure wheel spin and have zero life tyre for the stint. This effect was multiplied 10x in the wet, plus the fact if the tyre wear went to 0%, it was effectively like driving on ice making it virtually impossible to drive into the pits as you just turned an F1 car into a beyblade. So for this race, the tyres literally had 9 laps of life in them, no more, and if I didn't drive an inch perfect race, a lot less. So I had to attempt this race about 4 or 5 times to try and finish it, cause if I didn't get optimal grip out of the corners with minimal tyre slip then I would lose any sense of the word "grip" and not be able to reach the pitlap to get new set of boots on. So preceded the SWEATIEST GAMER MOMENT OF MY LIFE driving like a man possessed to score a vital podium to maintain my lead in the championship against Sebastian Vettel. This game may be dog ass but it did provide one my most poignant gaming/racing memories of trying to finish that damn race.

Imagine an F1 game that is what I would call a "driver simulator", and not just a sim(cade) racing game. You start at an older season like 2000 and progress all the way up to 2020. The cars change, the teams change, the drivers change, the tracks change, all according to what happened in real life. Fully replicating what it means to actually be an F1 driver. I'd sell my right arm for that kind of game.
@Ch4pp133 жыл бұрын
I think I could see that being a thing in future F1 codemaster games, but with EA calling the shots... Someone else would have to do that.
@sirtophattingson89463 жыл бұрын
To an extent, this is possible with modding and assetto corsa. However, you'd be doing spec series, and it would lack the F1-specific spectacle that the codemasters games bring.

Having collected a physical copy of every single F1 game to date and witnessing how Codemasters have evolved is staggering! I will always love this series and will continue to support their work! The way you research each game offers insight into how they defined F1 over the years and introduced the sport to millions!

As for Red bull being out performed by their junior team. That isn't always a game issue. That's sometimes just how it was in reality. Toro rosso/alfa tauri are a resourceful bunch and often get more out of their car than most tend to give them credit for. They've won races in races in which red bull didn't come close. (I'm 8 minutes in so far will give my full comment when done)
@Raycevick3 жыл бұрын
Toro don't win routinely, as you can in the game.
@piyushgandhi79593 жыл бұрын
IRL torro rosso won their first race before red bull. Vettel won the race , italian gp I think 2008 (not sure)
@insertgenericusernamehere24023 жыл бұрын
@@Raycevick 1 hour in. You're correct about that toro rosso didn't win like red bull especially from 2010-13 but to be honest any driver with enough skill in the game can win with a Caterham or a marussia, and when it's a simcade that's to be expected. Especially as the earlier games focused more on the "cade" prefix I genuinely think the games went more along the sim route from 2015 ondward and are continuing to become more and more a racing sim than a arcade title. In the way the forza series attempted to be more a sim racer than their horizon series, not saying that f1 will go the route of two different franchises. But with the surge in popularity of the franchise and the sport itself I can see the game going in a more hardcore approach which could be damaging saying all this however. It will be interesting to see which direction EA steers the series. And if we'll get another terrible addition of braking point like seen in today's game, it hit every cliche in the book over your head and said you will like it.

Its one of the reasons I haven't gone back to the series, I don't wanna get scary hooked again... Well that and it costs too much to take the enjoyment to the next level, purchasing a good wheel, widescreen monitors, VR etc ...
