Pickets are for fences, Ballester's are for railings. The piece of wood at the floor that overhangs the stairs is called floor nosing .

Verify that the width (space) between Balusters needs to meet a code required width. 6 1/2" might be to wide, but check with your local residential building code.

Real awesome job, we have 8 dogs and 3 cats, used to be 12 dogs and 16 cats, but life cycle happens. You may think you are not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but you are not that far away and you work so hard for the family, I really admire you. Great job by Steph and Nan too.

Jay, man, that turned out awesome. Everything to do with stairs can turn into a giant PIA! Your wife has a good eye for design, and you did a good job executing. For what it's worth, the bld code for the spindles/ balisters generally runs like 3 1/2" inches max width between them. But it turned out really nice.
@Building_Jays_Way
@Building_Jays_Way Жыл бұрын
Yeah I think they’re at about 4 to 4 1/2 inches. But I mean it’s such a small section I’m hoping no one’s gonna fall through it! Lol
@rickwhitescarver8526

I was thinking the same but its 4 inches measured on a level line not on the 40 deg line. So it probably is close enough

The "pickets" are balusters. The correct spacing won't allow a 4" diameter sphere to pass through, but yours look great. A run of balusters, by the way, is called a balustrade. Great job fixing the cut newel post!
