I always hoped Raylan might wind up with Ava. Ithought their chemistry was much better than Winona. I thought the actress did a brilliant job with Ava too.

Raylan and Winona's chemistry was top notch. Raylan was pretty cruel to Ava, there's no reason to want them to be together unless you expect Ava to be with a man who never wanted anything serious with her. He wanted his ex-wife back and even Ava knew she didn't stand a chance.

That might have been hard considering he never wanted to be with her and she was obnoxiously throwing herself at him every chance she got.

Ava was the worst! Her accent was so comical and exaggerated, borderline unbearable by the final season. Winona was infinitely better in every way. She was way more gorgeous, independent, and never glommed on to the first man that paid attention to her. I fully understand why Raylan was obsessed with Winona and was never trying to be serious with Ava even though she could not take a hint.

Raylan and Ava never worked. Well, obviously they didn't work but I don't like the actors together. Never found Ava appealing and hard to believe Raylan would either. I always preferred Winona, both as a character and she was so darn beautiful.

I disagree. I think Ava is one of the most interesting characters in the series. She didn't set out to be a criminal, she fell into it when she had to admit to herself she was in love with Boyd. So you had the two sides of her character warring with each other... the part that wanted to be a good decent person, and the part that was dedicated to her criminal. I thought watching Joelle Carter navigate Ava through that ethical conflict was one of the most engaging parts of the series. But I have to face it, I mostly watched the series for Raylan's old west style gunfights.

It doesn't matter if she didn't set out to be a criminal, she chose to become one. She was never forced into it, in fact, she made it a point to make herself a bigger part of Boyd's criminal enterprise. Her ethical quandary was pointless the moment she decided to sacrifice Ellen May's life because things weren't going her way. I despised Ava from that point forward. Not to mention she had the worst arc of the entire series in Season 5. No one wanted to see Ava in prison for 13 episodes, a character and an actress that weren't compelling enough to carry an entire subplot on their own.

You do realize the series starts with her killing her husband? It was justified of course but she technically starts the series as a criminal lol. And she didn't really have issues with getting into business with Boyd until she was arrested.

I know some people hate Ava but I thought she was cool until Season 3. Then I agree that she got awful leading up to the worst subplot in the entire series with her in prison. She was never better than Boyd, a criminal herself. But she hid behind him as long as things worked out in her favor. I didn't think her ending was satisfying because she left Harlan a murderer and convict and basically put Raylan in a hard position trying to cover up for her. She's lucky Raylan had a little bit of empathy left for her.

Interesting to see so many comments here that are Anti-Ava. Ava is a ride or die kind of partner; Winona is the complete opposite, run when things get difficult. Plus she is not virtuous- she cheated on Raylan with Gary, cheated on Gary with Raylan and stole money from the evidence room.

When people say Ava is ride or die, it makes me wonder if they watched the entire series. She is either glomming on to the first man who will be her "savior" (first Raylan, then Boyd) and then when the going gets tough, she literally turns on Boyd and shoots him and leaves him for dead. I actually agree with her becoming a CI and turning on Boyd, but if you think think that's ride or die, you got the wrong story. Winona at least has agency and is not dependent on anyone. She leaves Raylan each time because she isn't going to sit around and wait for him to never change. And if you think Winona stealing money is bad, what do you think of Ava who is a murderer and then also attempts to trade Ellen May's life to help herself in Season 4? She's 10x worse.

I wasn't a fan of Ava, she wanted to be the criminal girl boss and couldn't deal with any of the consequences of her own actions. She had some really good scenes in S1 and S6 but was very inconsistent and frankly poorly acted between S2-5. Even in this episode, she's STILL trying to get Raylan back after he's not only gotten back together with his ex-wife (team Winona forever!) but has tried to let her down multiple times in S1. Later scene in this episode, she accuses him again of cheating on her which is very interesting given the audience obviously sees that the two were never engaged in a serious relationship and Raylan never reciprocated her feelings but for Ava, Raylan represented her knight in shining armor. But he was always going to be in love with Winona!
