Not certain who we actually attribute it to but: In 1918 Senator Hiram Johnson said, “The first casualty when war comes is truth.” In Ancient Greece Aeschylus said 'In war, truth is the first casualty.' Samuel Johnson said: 'Among the calamities of war may be jointly numbered the diminution of the love of truth, by the falsehoods which interest dictates and credulity encourages.' (from The Idler, 1758) Put it anyway you like its still the same fact. In wartime, politicians lie.

@@Tubemanjac You miss on the basic fact that morals like ethics has NOTHING to do with politics and never really has. If politicians repeat something from history its either out of ignorance or they do it deliberately and they can either get a good or bad result out of it. The most fundamental aspect of any political decision is "How does it benefit the politician and how does it benefit their backers?" These days that's almost been simplified to "What do the billionaires want?"

In the USA most of that generation are now one foot in the grave. Like Ron Paul and Bernie Sanders. BTW, I can't recall any high ranking military commanders, that have chosen their sense of honour or duty to citizens, over the fear of reprisals. Anyone got good examples? Colin Powell, for example, was utterly shameless and dishonorable, considering he tried covering up My Lie massacre AND lied to UN Sec counsel about Iraq. Ignoring the rest for convenience. In USSR, quite a few military generals with integrity - blew their brains out, right in the office or that evening hanged themselves at home, when the country was illegaly destroyed. Recently, to show how bad Russia mishandled the preparation, it was reported an armored force commander shoot himself, after inspecting what vehicles he was given to work with. Quite a few others died leading the soldiers they were responsible for, from the front instead of from the rear as US would expect.

I think the real pity is that a major geopolitical shift is facilitated by a catastrophic event, not so much a quiet passing of the torch. What will likely follow is a frantic scramble of the world's powers to assert themselves as successors of the US in world domination leading to an intense period of global conflict before settling into a new order. That said, the friction zones of our current geopolitical power centers already live in that reality so perhaps it is unjust to hope the same won't befall us.

Seeing what happened in Ukraine, what I think in my heart is not the sovereignty of countries or all kinds of political struggles, but those poor ordinary people. Taiwan, where I live now, is the next Ukraine that countries around the world are reporting. I actually dislike the United States very much, although they are the most powerful country in all fields in the world. But the United States is also the most evil country in my opinion. I am very disgusted to see the faces of many American politicians on TV and the media every day. I thought of the hometown where I live, Taiwan is very likely to become the second Ukraine in the future. My family, my friends, and my compatriots will become victims of the country-to-country confrontation. In fact, I am very angry. I don't know how many people in the United States know that their country is a very domineering, evil and cruel country. My English and my professional knowledge are not enough. yeah from germany too. so saf whats going on here. education. economy. freedom. rising of socialism instruments and the always one directianal barking of the media. i feel like im living under lemmings.. why there are so few people see whats really going on? i mean politics and media doin the same thing as 2020 and most follow like sheeps.. man is so hard to see? deep in my heart i think not the majority of us germans want this war in ukraine longterm at all

As I said before, that's not true. It will have an enormous impact. More ppl need to hear this. Despair is the enemy's greatest most potent weapon. Despair, that's you, Kirk. This is defeatism and I'm not sure weather you're not of sound mind and soul anymore, or you're trying to sabotage the message on purpose (the latter seeming more likely). One can always talk to those who oppose you, "but no counsel I have to give to those who despair. But counsel I could give, will you not listen"? Kirk, I'm not talking about the evil "them", I'm talking to you. People like you are the real problem. Sad but it needs to be said.

It's just so sad to see that there is so little knowledge in the media and amongst politicians regarding Russia and Ukraine. They all seem to think that war is the only solution. Really, as someone from Europe it's almost laughable how 'we' are gonna underestimate Russia once again. And don't forget, the reason why Russia annexed Crimea is that Kiev told Russia that their Navy Fleet had to leave, whilst Russia had a lease contract for I think another 30years. Don't poke the bear if you don't wanna get hurt, anybody knows that.

Correct, and it was going to be replaced by the American navy military base, right on Russia doorstep. There are 800 plus too many American bases already all over the world.

What an unbelievable speech. How it will be deemed I don't know but this man is not afraid of cancel culture. A true mediator. Has any CIA analyst ever sung at the UN before? That should be mandatory; that delegates from every country have to sing a favourite song before making a speech or do a folk dance. I would watch the Spanish diplomats doing flamenco :)

Thank you, Mr. McGovern, from Germany for speaking the truth. If I were to say that in Germany, I run the risk of losing my job or being reported. Some people have also lost their homes or their bank accounts! Shitstorm campaigns are now the order of the day! I am now very concerned about this totalitarian "cancel culture". 😳😢
