I must have watched 6 documentaries and movies about this rescue, this one just came across my KZbin feed. It really helps gel all the glitz given to the British divers into perspective. We know at least a dozen international divers participated, but only 3 became acknowledged heros. I'm so glad these other intimate stories of this miraculous successful global effort are out there and not washed away with time. I live 7km from the cave, been there before during and after, not the most inviting habitat to be in under any conditions. This rescue could not happen without EACH group of incredible men doing their job. Thank you.

I wonder why they wouldn't give Maksym a rebreather? Ben had one, so he could have continued on for hours, but not alone. Maksym had tanks which didn't allow him to continue, so they both turned back. After watching a dozen retellings of this story, the cockiness of some of the "heroes," who never mention Ben, Maksym, Pae or Seva and were pretty dismissive of the Thai Seal team doesn't sit so well with me.

Absolute respect to these guys, they are heroes. My dismay is that, not only the divers featured here but also the large numbers of support volunteers who have only been included as, “Oh yes there were others who helped,” without asking for or being given credit or acknowledgement. They too deserve much more recognition than has been offered. Personally, I am able to only name one, who I count as a personal friend, so it’s not even remotely appropriate for me to identify him. Enough for him to know that he has my undying respect! 👌 I think the lack of recognition is disgraceful, each nation involved should be encouraged to provide a roll of honour for their own Nationals, to be displayed along with the rolling credits of ANY and ALL media regarding this truly international cooperative operation!

The cave isn't at fault. It has been visited safely by many before. What needs to be done is changing the work culture in Thailand. It should not hierarchy based. The incident could have been prevented if employees at the weather centre had the authority to issue a public warning about monsoon starting. The slow process of getting critical information to the higher ups and then waiting for their response. That really played a strong part in this unfortunate incident. If public warning had been issues just a little faster. The soccer team would not have entered the caves.

But “SOME” drivers came for the “Pictures and News” inside the cave to sell to the media which is illegal, that is why they are not allowed to enter the cave in the later.

Mostly, we've just heard how 2 British divers found the boys & Dr Harris the anesthesiologist, who won the Australian award. Edited: in my original comment, I had mentioned about the rumors that had circulated, about why the British weren't on speaking terms with the 1st team anymore etc. A reply comment has explained the other side. So to not continue on the rumors, I have edited/deleted the original piece. All in all; the Thai Cave rescue was truly a joint effort. EVERYONE & every bit was critical. From the divers to pump workers, all risked their lives, to the people who donated all the food, cooks cooking, to the owners who donated all the lines used, all the pump materials, and... to the poor villagers who had given up their farmlands knowing full well their land would have no crops for a year. And still agreed unanimously to allow the flood waters to be diverted to flood their farm lands. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Without any one of those, the rescue may not of been successful.

This is absolutely incorrect. The British divers gave up on the rescue and children and went sightseeing at the Tham Pla temple when the Thai Seals with the help of Ben & Maksym finally managed to make progress and laid guideline. The Seals, Ben & Maksym who had little to none information of the cave were practically diving blind when they laid the guideline through the most COMPLEX part of the cave. Robert Harper and Vern Unsworth who explored the cave in the past and were familiar with its passageways were with Rick and John sightseeing. According to Rick Stanton before diving even was possible the British team had distanced themselves from the Thai Navy Seals and Ben's team and mainly worked with the US Air Force. The Thai Seals, Ben and Maksym recorded all their progress they have made in a waterproof notebook and when Ben had informed the British divers of the amazing progress and brought them back on the rescue with the help of Ruengrit (Pae), the British divers were briefed by the Thai Navy Seals (there is a existing video of it). And the next day when the children were found it was Ben personally who briefed the British divers of his progress in chamber 3, just moments before they dived (there is also a existing video of it). Elaine, the rumors you have heard could not be further from the truth.

Without the team on top of the mountain, directing the water away from the sink holes the rescue would not have happened; without the strength of the coach keeping the children calm, the ending would have been tragic; etc. etc. etc. ...and so and so forth. Every person involved played a their very important part - the aim was to rescue those poor children and their coach - the aim was achieved. Precious lives were saved, by everyone stepping in and stepping out, and pulling together to achieve that aim. A magnificent effort from each and every one concerned - it upsets me when people sour this fantastic and magnificent happy ending with negative unhelpful comments.

This was not meantioned in 13 Lives. If totally true, the more famous 3 divers from the movie ought to have explicitly mentioned the efforts of these men who pioneered the way to the children.

In the National Geographic Documentary Rick Stanton DID mention and thank Ben and the NAVY SEALS for persevering when he and John thought there was no hope. He thanked Ben for continuing to put the line.

Not entirely true. Rick Stanton thanked Ben 3 years after the rescue (1 year after the release of this documentary) and John Volanthen never thanked or shared the credit to this day.

Thanks for this video from another angle. Watched many videos and agree that names Ben n Max did not pop out alot. As depicted by the Netflix series, the official story must have much political "relationship" at play.

Enjoyed and appreciated this documentary. Watched 13 lives . I wanted to know what else and who else was involved. I was sure that while the Brit team was brave, there had to be so much else going on. I mean just trying to keep water levels from building up during monsoon season . I tighten up going down in some low ceilings undergrounds , can't imagine diving in the dark in such confusing restricted spaces.

Totally amazing. I heard the children were givin a sedation to get them out alive .no mention of this diver who was an anastesiaoligost. So they would not panic .he is one of the unsung heros .it worked and very risky . I sing for you Ben, Maxim, Ivan and Poe. I respect all divers include our Finnish diwer. Also navy seals were impressive. I wonder why two British behave not so professional way, maybe there was "too big egos" but as the Maxim said, the result is most important. I send thanks to this untold story and huge respect Ben and Maxim and your group with navy seals🌻

In his book, Rick Stanton falsely insinuated that Ivan Karadzic, who was suffering from a fever and severe dehydration in the field hospital, was essentially seeking a way out of the rescue. And John Volanthen in his book said “Some of the Euro Divers only went into the cave once before deciding the work was not for them. The egotists in the group were noted too.” However, in reality, it was only Rick and John who gave up on the rescue and the children, opting for sightseeing instead. Besides of Ben's team (the Thai Navy Seals support team) and the Euro Divers, the British also downplayed and/or made false accusations or insinuations against the Governor, the Admiral, the Thai Navy Seals, and the SpaceX team, all of whom were essential to the successful outcome of the rescue but were not part of the British team.

Synopsis: The untold story is that Rick Stanton and John Volathen of The British Cave Rescue Council initially found it too difficult and dangerous to penetrate into the cave and were about to give up when two other divers were called in, Ben Reymenants of Belgium and Maksym Polejaka of Ukraine. Ben and Maksym did much of the ground work in way of exploring the right side of the T junction and laying of guide ropes through the most difficult sections- making the rescue possible and yet are barely mentioned in most articles and documentaries. In 12 Lost interview, Ben states he was the first to say the kids would need to be brought out in full face masks and was ridiculed by the Brits and shunted off to manage the O2 tank replenishment station. However both were recognized by The Thai Royal Navy and His Majesty The King to receive medal commendations.

I tend to observe that the people least concerned about personal recognition and credit are the most effective at getting results. In many instances big egos, often those of legit NPD cases, will come in to take credit and glory after the hard work is done. This story seems to at least somewhat keep with that trend.
