I’ve been a Z50 user for a year. It is my first serious Nikon. Mostly thanks to you, and what I learned on this channel I added the 50mm 1.8 and the 85mm 1.8 S lenses to my Z50 kit lenses. Those S lenses are amazing. Then last month, since prices seem to be headed up, I got the Z6, which I still have to grow into. I’ll probably spend the rest of the year getting to know these cameras and lenses but it’s quite an interesting journey. Thanks, Ray, for all you do.

Hi Ray. I got hold of a Z6 last week to compliment my D500. I own the FTZII adapter and a few F-mount FX lenses (70-200VR II, 50mm F1.4, 85mm AF-D). My other lenses, including most zooms, are DX. I plan to get some Z glass before I move to a Z8. Which wide to standard zoom would you recommend for event-type stills and corporate video as my first Z lens? I gravitate to primes most of the time, but for a rigged video setup (got rails / V-mount / shotgun / Ninja V), I think I want a zoom first. Until now I took a Nikon body for stills and Sony for video but I am consolidating to Nikon only. I really like your channel, it was instrumental in committing to Nikon for video work!
@RaymondParkerPhoto Жыл бұрын
I don't own it (since I had/have the F-mount 2.8 version) but the 24-70 f/4.0 S is a great little lens. It was the original "kit" lens for the Z6 and for the price it's still popular. The f/2.8 is really stellar and, of course, will give better subject isolation -- great for video. I will buy at some point. Glad you're enjoying my content. Thanks.

Happy birthday! I'm with you, Raymond... I upgraded from my original Z6 to the Z6II about a year ago, and although I finally received my Z9 about 10 days ago, (Hurrah!) I'm keeping the Z6II, for the reasons you mentioned. And... Last winter, I made a trip out to Knik Glacier, here in Alaska, in the middle of the night, with no moon. There is no "road", per se... only a trail used by local off-roaders, but I wanted to document the trip out. So, I shot all the way there and back, through the windshield of a moving truck on a very bumpy road, using a shutter speed of 1/500th, f/4 and ISO 51,200. There was certainly some noise in those photos, but hey, I got useable photos of the trip! So, aside from the video, it's the low-light capabilities that I really value on the Z6 and Z6II. Take care!

Awesome testimonial! It's been a while since I was in Alaska. First trip in 1976 in a 1959 Chevvy pickup (we got to know a lot of welders over 2 months on the "road"). I'm an owner of D750 and Z6 with firmware 3.40 My summary of Z6 cons are: 1. NO quick way to switch Shutter Speed with AUTO-ISO function (none) 2. NO virtual horizon know from DSLR (from Z9 only) 3. NO lock for focus point know from DSLR (from Z9 only) 4. NO zebra in photo mode (none) 5. NO eye/face detection on/off switch (none) 6. NO clean view in LCD or EVF (from Z6ii/Z7ii) 7. NO crop frames when you choose different crop mode for example 16:9 (from Z9 only) 8. NO DX-mode frames in viewfinder, it just magnifing the view instead of drawing a frame of DX-format (none) 9. NO distance scale, its just a simple bar (none) It can be fixed by firmware update. But NIKON forgot about us - Z6 users If I'm wrong about some of the above points, please correct me. If you have "time" to change settings before photo was taken - buy Z6 other than that use DSLR or search other brands.

Raymond, I have owned the Nikon Z6II for two years. I appreciated hearing your considered opinion on why you continue to keep and use your Zed 6 cameras. For me: Nikon color is superior. I learned how to take action photos using the programmable buttons as taught by Joe Nuzzo ( see his KZbin videos). I have the optional power grip as, for me, it gives camera balance using the Z24-70 f. 2.8 S lens. Often I shoot Aperture priority and a maximum ISO of 2000. The Z9 seems to more camera than I need and more than I can afford. I now have a iPhone 14 Pro. In certain situations it can match or surpass the Nikon Z6. I think its taking several photos to create a final composite photo is a leap in photography technology land I hope Nikon will implement it in their future cameras. Dan ,

Enjoyed your video. I purchased my Z6 with the 24-70 mm f4 in 2020. The 50 f1.8 S was the first prime lens I bought. Very much enjoying it. To me, the autofocus has always been good and has gotten steadily better with updates. With the recent sale Nikon held, I just added the 35 f1.8 S line lens. I am glad Nikon continues to pushing the limits off what they can do with cameras like the Z9. For myself, I am still pretty challenged with the Z6. One day I’ll consider upgrading, for now there are still a LOT of images I need to learn to capture. 🙂

Happy birthday Ray!!! Life begins at 70! Not that I would know, but just sayin. 😂👍 I love my Z6 too, and Z7. I like comparing them to the purity of the original Nikon F. On paper the F2, F3, etc. were improvements in the spec department, but I'd take a Nikon F any day. The Z6 is low-light and video, and the Z7 landscape. I'm not much of an action photographer, but I'd jump all over something like a compact Z8 sporting Z9 autofocus.

My Canon 5D III is over 10 years old and I've loved since day 1. Its full frame sensor still suits me fine for my needs. Will I ever jump on the mirrorless bandwagon? I'm not sure, but I'm not the gearhead you are either. I'm not looking for more megapixels because I like the low noise my camera offers but the dynamic range of the new cameras and video capabilities are quite enviable. It seems like photography is more about editing, codecs and peripherals these days. All of that said, I do enjoy watching your channel to find out where the technology is going.
@RaymondParkerPhoto2 жыл бұрын
Digital cameras have been excellent for some time, but definitely mirrorless is the way the whole industry is going, for good reason. I'd like to set the record straight by disavowing my position as a "gearhead." Believe it or not I'm not that interested in gear for gear's sake -- only insofar as choosing the right tools for my work and appreciating well-made tools. I don't buy every new camera that appears -- which is why I didn't "upgrade" to the Z6II -- and, admittedly, the Z9 is overkill for most of what I do today ... but those video specs! For me, photography has always been about editing, which is why I spent so much time in the darkroom over the decades. I controlled my photos from camera, right through to the print, which I still do today. The relatively new adventure for me is video and, yes, that demands a high degree of processing, from colour correction to actual editing and, last but not least, audio -- all endeavours I'm sure I'll never master, but have fun trying.

I was able to pickup my second Z9 last Saturday, and I have the new 800mm f/6.3S lens on order thru NPS, though I’m not sure I’ll make the purchase when it comes in. I’m not really a wildlife enthusiast though that might change once I’ve had the opportunity to use the 800mm lens. I figured I would try it for 30 days, and return it if I decide it’s not for me. There are a couple of other lenses on the roadmap which are more appealing to me - specifically, the 85mm and 200-600mm lenses - that I’d more likely get more use out of, and will probably be much less expensive. In fact, I could probably get both lenses for less than 800mm lens alone. I recently retired from my day job after 36 years, so I have to be a little more careful with my “discretionary” spending 😉.

Here I go again :) But you did ask. :) Until Nikon releases a firmware update that provides audio (beep!) confirmation of roll/cut in video mode, I'll continue to acquire footage of my feet, inadvertently recorded by my error in not actively consulting on every shot I complete the tiny, near-invisible red dot at the top center of the viewfinder. I'll continue to hate on Nikon for refusing to implement this valuable, error-saving, human-friendly feature present on every other video camera I own. Four of them, actually. Otherwise, it's a so-so video camera in my opinion. IQ is okay, media flexibility adequate, usability poor. Does your Z9 provide a confirmation beep on roll/cut? I admit to being a bit of a contrarian. I recently returned my Mac Studio Max because it underperformed my two year old mid-spec Windows machine. Congrats, youngster, on surviving the Big Seven Zero.

I compared timeline scrubbing fluidity in Resolve, rendering output time in Resolve, Render time for a simple 3D animation in Blender and stitching a several images pano in Photoshop CC. On all tests, the Mac was marginally slower than the W10 box. The Mac is a delightful piece of engineering, uses 10% of the power of the W10 machine and is absolutely dead silent. A three-decades Windows user, the Mac was my first ever Apple computer. I experienced difficulty using MacOS due to issues learning and remembering many new commands and workflows. Sorta like driving in NZ - narrow, single lane mountain highways, high speed other traffic contention and everything done opposite to what I'm familiar with. Definitely worth a try for me. From my perspective, an XQD or CFexpress card is not overly expensive in relation to a $2000 camera, especially when the superior build and performance is accounted for. Videographers and those counting on squeezing every ounce of functionality from the camera aren't counting pennies in this way.

@@RaymondParkerPhoto Right. I don't do much video. Many of us are hobbyists and very advanced armatures that occasionally sell our work. Some of these cards' cost per GB are quite high. Not pennies to us.
