i think to make 8s work you'd need to pair it with an item that prefers to be even further back. based on what I could find on the Mario wiki, the best item for that is lightning

the crazy 8s don't work like you know them in Custom items. If you choose one item that comes from the crazy 8 with the crazy 8, and you pull the crazy 8, then 8 of the selected single item will come up. if you select 2 items it will be 4 4 and so on and so on

The crazy eight does work it just is very rare to get and I think you were actually to far behind. Plus how it works is that whatever item you pick it gives eight of that item. For example if you picked coin with crazy eight and then got the crazy eight you would just have eight coins. If you want to have the full crazy eight you would have to pick all the items in the crazy eight and the crazy.

I have a theory on the crazy 8 item. Game sees all other items turned off so has no clue what to do since the crazy 8 item includes items that are turned off. That said, if you really want to test crazy 8, use the priority method. Someone in 1st for example never gets the blue shell, try with blue shell and crazy 8s only and see if it gives you 8 blue shells or how it reacts

Battle mode with only feathers is basically Joust. It actually kinda makes the gameplay more like traditional Mario considering you essentially need to jump on enemies.

Stars only can be interesting on certain maps (off road shortcuts), but those maps are not that common in Mario Kart 8

My guess with the 8 item is that because it's a combination of eight other items, it needs those items to exist in order to spawn. The reason it makes you enable at least one of item is for error-handling, so you don't pick up null item boxes and break the game. Mushrooms seem to be the default item when nothing is found, which is why the boos were conjuring up mushrooms and why only crazy 8s also caused mushrooms to be enabled. One way to test this would be to see if 8s start appearing when all their constituent items are enabled.

Strat to win Blue Shells only: For all laps except the last lap, stay away from first place. Maybe be in 5th or 6th. When it’s the last lap, stay near 1st place, so be in 2nd or 3rd. When 1st is about to win, just dash past them.

The lucky 8 can spawn only the 8 items that it normally supports. That is Coin, Mushroom, Banana, Green shell, Red shell, Blooper, Bomb, Star. No Blue shell, no Fire flower, no nothing. So, lucky 8 can give you 8 Mushrooms for example spinning around you thus you'll not know if someone got it except if you see the 8 items spinning

i think with the 8 item there has to be multiple items to grab in the pool to orbit you, this means you cant get 3 shells or 3 bananers, and other items you can only get 1. so during your test you only had 1 item so it was only going to give that 1 item hence it wasnt the "8"

Well boos cant steal boos, so they give you mushrooms instead. If the game cant do something with only that item, they will give a mushroom in its place because the mushroom is the default item.

I think the 8 item is not its own thing, it just randomly picks one of the other items available. That's why it made you turn one on, and there was no reason to get it if you would only spin mushroom or coin. Try with like 3 other items turned on. Also: I have on multiple occasions green shelled myself, and have also had the "Who's in first? Wait, I am" moment.
