In US news and current events today, the Atlanta police killing of Rayshard Brooks has sparked new controversy over police brutality and racism. Here's Rayshard Brooks speaking before he was killed.
Footage via @REFORM
After the police killing of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks, and countless other Black people in America, the resulting George Floyd protests and Black Lives Matter protests against police brutality, police racism, and police violence have put systemic racism in the spotlight as BLM protesters take to the streets in support of police reform, racial justice and civil rights. The Rayshard Brooks killing, in the drive-thru of a Wendy's, was a particularly egregious act, and Garrett Rolfe, the Atlanta police officer who killed Brooks, has been arraigned on charges. As we know, Rayshard Brooks protests continue throughout Atlanta, protests can accomplish much. Justice for Rayshard Brooks will be a long, difficult battle, but as Rashard Brooks himself said, ‘A lot of things caused me to be behind, but I’m trying. I’m not the type of person to give up. And I will keep going until I make it to where I want to be.’

@@MrTheman18 I am afraid you haven't visited enough countries and places of this World to say so. In this particular case, none of the cops ever mentionned the skin colour nor had racist words. Nothing proves he wouldn't have been shot if he was white. But a lot allows to think he wouldn't have been shot if he had not been causing troubles, attacking non violent cops and then trying to run away. Which doesn't mean it justifies the fact he was shot, just that it is more likely related to his acts than his skin colour. Actually the only persons speaking about skin colour are the ones commenting this event and trying to link it to their ideology while none of its participants did. Isn't that a kind of racism in some ways ?

@@MrTheman18 sorry, statistics show whites are 25% more likely to have a fatal interaction with police than blacks, fake msm just doesnt blast it everywhere so we dont hear about it. Plain and simple, it's only a big deal when it's a white killing a black, cop or not. Why do you think black on black homicide, or a black cop killing a white guy aren't the headlines EVER? Doesn't fit the democratic narrative of racism and "white supremacy" being the biggest issues we have in the states, when in reality racism really only exists because of democrats.

@@JSparo-TotalWarMachinima The thing is that in this particular case, officer rolfe has a record: Revealed: officer who killed Rayshard Brooks accused of covering up 2015 shooting "In August 2015, Rolfe and two other officers opened fire on Jackie Jermaine Harris, who they chased after he was caught driving a stolen truck, the Guardian can reveal after reviewing court documents on the incident. However, the shooting was not reported by the police involved. Harris, like Brooks, is African American.'" "Judge Doris L Downs, during a 2016 court hearing, called the case a “disaster” and said “it’s the wildest case I’ve seen in my 34 years here.” Downs said she was so troubled by officers failing to report the shooting that she wanted the matter investigated. “None of the police put in the report that they shot the man - none of them. And they sent him to Grady [Memorial Hospital] with collapsed lungs and everything, and the report doesn’t mention it,” Downs said. “I am ethically going to be required to turn all of them in.” Downs even suggested state and federal authorities get involved. She said: “What the police did was wrong, and they will have to answer for what they did.” It is unclear if any action was taken. Downs could not be reached for comment. "

Wants more time with kids and family, passed out/ drunk in car in drive through, got caught and didn’t want to go back to prison for third violation of probation! I’m sorry he died, but he did everything to escalate this. And I’m really tired of too many people thinking resisting arrest is OK. Look up his arrest record, there is violence in his recent past. The kindness and compassionate heart of this man is beautiful to see. The knowledge that I would not know anything about this man if his life hadn’t been stolen from us is jarring. This man had ideas, he was searching, he was committed to his wife and family. He was admittedly imperfect and refusing to give up. I feel his loss hurts all of us because what if his idea to improve the probation system worked? What if it was scalable and could be used for other things as well? What if it was easy to implement and easy to support - less expensive than what we do now even? What if he was still alive and this idea was implemented and that gave him more ideas? This man could have changed the world for all of us. This is what we lost when he was killed. This soul, this problem solver, this man who loved his wife and children, who was just like everyone else, imperfect, but still trying. God rest his soul. God protect his wife and children. God comfort his mother and father and all who love him. God please help the rest of us grow in creative problem solving with empathy and compassion at the forefront of our minds. Amen.

Robert Ellison if everyone could fix their problems by going back in time to fix their parents we’d all be princes and princesses now. How many people really do you think respond positively when you tell them they’re bad parents? Or disapprove of their parenting? Disagree you should hit kids. Disagree you should hit more. There’s no right or wrong answer. And love comes in different ways. What should be important is going forward. Probation officers shouldn’t be mini slave catchers is what he’s saying. Some do look out for their charges and give them advice and keep them close and give counsel. Some don’t. What he’s saying is, if there was someone to help rather than restrict an already restricted life, he could make life better for himself and his family. Which is what really getting out of prison is. It should be a second chance. Not a obstacle and bringing you back to prison thing

3 weeks before he was shot a group of officer were charged for an arrest where they used a taser. The taser was ruled a deadly weapon, now the exact same DA from that case is saying that a taser is not a deadly weapon so that he can charge this officer. It is very unfortunate that he died and it didn’t need to happen but it’s definitely not the officers fault that it did, everything was going fine he was gonna get a fine and spend the night in a drunk tank then he decided to run, literally attack police the two cops, run off with a stolen taser and fire it.

We’re not angry at him, we’re angry at the DA who is trying to give life in prison to the cop who justifiably shot Brooks. We feel sorry for Brooks, it was all his fault. he put himself down that path, he fought the cops, he took their taser, he fired it at them. The georgia law clearly states that police can shoot someone who presents harm or potential death towards the officer or someone else. What is crazy is that the DA is saying that a taser isn’t a deadly weapon when two week ago the DA said tasers were a deadly weapon. The DA is also under investigation for embezzlement and was losing his election bid. So he threw these cops under the bus so he could get fame and praise from the black community that make up more than 66% of Atlanta.

Maybe the pressure was too much and he slipped up. It is hard to stay clean and sober even with massive support! He was missing his mom that night, he was talking to the officer about her death and visiting her grave site. You can also how traumatized he is about being arrested and incarcerated again and it sheds some light on why he fought so hard to avoid that. Nothing is as simple as it seems. :(

Just thinking about his family "While drinking and driving" . We have restrictions "while committing a crime". The system ,It's hurting our kids and taking away from our families " Because I was a criminal it's the systems fault not mine" . I just wanna spend more time with my kids " as I sit passed out drunk, alone, in this Wendy's parking lot". This is just one more criminal, who refuses to take full responsibility for his actions previous to being incarcerated and then after. Always wanting to blame someone else. This has zero to do with "Race". There are millions of successful black individuals who chose the right path . The are millions of white individuals who have chosen the wrong path. You can choose to accept what life hands you, or you can choose to work harder and become successful. One day, life will present you with a choice one will be easy and one will be hard. Go to school or stay home and smoke dope. Go to work or go party with friends. Study 10 more minutes or go to the pool. Save $10 for my family or buy a case of beer. Spend $40 on a carton of smokes or invest. Not one of these or the millions of other life choices has anything to do with race or the system. Yet these small choices can ultimately determine your future. Think, then act.

But once i found out I was going to be father i decided to put that foolishness behind me. That nothing was more important than being there for my son and providing for him. Obviously common sense tells me I can’t do that if I’m locked up. People need to stop feeling sorry for themselves and make better choices. It is this type of ignorance that will continue to fuel hatred within the justice system and for the justice system. What are the guidelines for taking somebody else's life? He did resist arrest. He even stole a taser. But went to flee the scene and was gunned down while running away. If you are still reading this and just for a moment picture if a family member got too drunk did something stupid and yes illegal. Which ended with them being murdered. I don't care what they were doing at the end of the day you are still going to have hatred for the person or people that took your family members life.

I honestly can't take the narrative that the cop intended to cause bodily harm because he was fueled with hate. The cop chatted him up for 30 min+. This guy had 30 min+ to sober up and do the right thing but he still made a very poor decision which ultimately costed his life. Let's not forget the same DA defined taser as lethal weapon. Cop had fraction of a second to make decision and he acted just as he was trained: to eliminate threat. Cop did right by the book. Let's judge this objectively by facts and not by color.

Let me get this straight, Rayshard Brooks: - Drove his car drunk and endangered countless lives on the road. - Had so much alcohol in his system that he feel asleep in his car three times. - Resisted arrest. - Wrestled two cops to the ground. - Punched one of them twice in the mouth, allowing him to escape. - Stole a cop's taser. - Aimed the taser at the cop's head from about 6 feet away and FIRED. It's sad because he did not have to die. But you know what, neither did the cop. He had to make a split second decision, in fact he didn't even have a hand on his gun up until the point where Brooks fired a possible lethal weapon at his head from point blank. The cops tried to cuff him, once that failed they tried to pin him, once that failed they tried to taser him, once that failed they tried to catch him, but Rayshard Brooks used the cop's stolen weapon and fired at his head. So the cop did what he had to do to survive...
