The RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) is a small, lightweight, infrared homing surface-to-air missile in use by the German, Japanese, Greek, Turkish, South Korean, Saudi Arabian, Egyptian, Mexican and U.S. Navies. It was intended originally and used primarily as a point-defense weapon against antiship cruise missiles. The missile is so named because it rolls around its longitudinal axis to stabilize its flight path, much like a bullet fired from a rifled barrel. As of 2005, it is the only U.S. Navy missile to operate in this manner.
The Rolling Airframe Missiles, together with the Mk 49 Guided Missile Launching System (GMLS) and support equipment, make up the RAM Mk 31 Guided Missile Weapon System (GMWS). The Mk-144 Guided Missile Launcher (GML) unit weighs 5,777 kilograms (12,736 lb) and stores 21 missiles. The original weapon cannot employ its own sensors prior to firing so it must be integrated with a ship's combat system, which directs the launcher at targets. On U.S. ships it is integrated with the AN/SWY-2 Ship Defense Surface Missile System (SDSMS) and Ship Self-Defense System (SSDS) Mk 1 or Mk 2 based combat systems. SeaRAM, a launcher variant equipped with independent sensors derived from the Vulcan Phalanx CIWS, is being installed on Littoral Combat Ships and certain Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.
Hope you enjoy!!

Actually, depending on the laser frequency, clouds won't matter. Different frequencies of light are blocked by different things. Objects that are transparent to one form of light are not to another. That's why we can see food but microwave ovens can use microwave light to heat it. I don't remember what frequencies can ignore clouds, but they exist. Edit spelling and wording.

The big disadvantage of the Phalanx is, you're still going to take some damage. You wind up getting hit by chunks of missile, that are still travelling at supersonic speeds, and, getting sprayed with unburned rocket, or, jet fuel. So, the extra engagement range of the RAM is very important.

Ah yes, this brings back memories. We were testing the RAM launcher back in 1986 on the USS Wm. H. Standley (CG-32). I believe we were one of the first handful of ships to test them. BTW, the CO was the famous Cpt. Kaiss, who I stood many bridge watches with, and one time he actually relieved me at the helm, temporarily. Yes, a USN captain actually at the helm of a cruiser. His next command was the USS Missouri and he became known as the last battleship captain. Sir, wherever you are, I would greatly wish to meet up with you and remember the Wm. H. Standley.

There is another launcher that can carry 21 missiles. And one more bit, the spin stability is not the reason for imparting roll to the airframe. It is to save cost of both the control actuator system and the seeker angle resolver capability….

Questions: 1) limited number of missiles, so what is the reload mechanism? a) withdraw to a fleet auxiliary? b) withdraw to a port? c) on board individual tube reload? If this option what is the armory load out? 2) What is the reload time? Minutes? hours? 3) How much does a missile weigh? 4) What is the skill level required for a blue shirt to shoot the damn thing? 5) What is the timing; identify threat, acquire threat, commit, launch, next?

@@rrenkrieg7988 I'm still trying to figure out WHY the Navy didn't combine SeaWiz (20mm) and SeaRam (the missiles) into a single composite system. They could... - Put 2 Quad Box Launchers on either side of a SeaWiz mount. - Put a 20mm Gatling Gun UNDER an 11-round SeaRam Launching Box on a taller mount. - Or to save weight... put a 20mm Gatling Gun UNDER the 8-round light-weight Launching Box the Germans developed.

What a timely piece. It is a fantastic missile for what it does. However, we can never forget what it does, and how it does it. The warhead is basically 25lb Blast Frag warhead. It flies pretty fast (Mach 2+): Mass 5,777 kg (12,736 lb) (launcher) 73.5 kilograms (162 lb 1 oz) (missile) Length 2.79 m (9 ft 2 in) (missile) Warhead blast fragmentation warhead Warhead weight 11.3 kg (24 lb 15 oz) (attribution-Wiki) Many of the old Soviet ASCMs were fast and armored so you had to literally destroy the missile in place instead of just kill it and let it continue on its ballistic path (usually descending upon you). There are classes of ASCMs (supersonic sea-skimming ASCMs) that are going to require greater firepower than a 25 lb Blast-frag warhead.

I'm not sure, but I recall the rifle like spinning found on the RAM is due to how close it is used to it's target. Most missiles have range to right themselves, but this is basically point blank, so needs to do some guidance righting right out of the tube.

Bad marketing It's value added was putting mult warheads on target almost instantly Potentially a way for dumb munition to punch holes in light armor buildings lite bunkers Any idiot could hold tube on target since recoil didn't kick in until after rounds nearly gone saturate target rich environment like a room full of combatants Would also gave made a wicked 21st century Katshuka? imagine 10' x 3' truck mounted pack Nearly 300 tubes 3000 grenades. NOT a replacement to easily infinitely reloadable grenade launchers & no one was looking for active minefields & air force already has saturation munitions My Take
@swaghauler8334
@swaghauler8334 4 жыл бұрын
The Navy did mount several special 40mm Grenade Launchers in 144-tube box-like assemblies on several ships. Each tube held 4 grenades and it was used for both AA defense and swarm boat defense. IDK IF they are still testing them or not. They only had a range of 2km so they weren't good as a stand-off CIWS.

Hi Matsimus, An excellent video! Just a few thoughts on this system. It mystifies me as to why our MOD didn't fund the integration of the Latest Variant of Sea Ram as a bare minimum level of Point Defence on both the QEC Carriers, or combined with Phalanx CWIS as well providing, in my mind, a crucial layered defence. This I feel is of particular importance as we do lack the adequate numbers of surface escorts to provide permanent escort defence duties to support the the Carriers. As far as I am aware the Alpha design developed during the early development and design assesment phase did have the Aster 15 missile system intergrated along with a number of other advanced features, but as all ways due penny pinching it was dropped.

Too much weight would be the result - its far better to prevent something being hit to reducing the Impact of being hit.Only special areas like Magazines etc have any sort of Armour on Modern Warships.

Wow block 2 missile. I remember getting upgrade to be able to handle block 1, when it (block 1) was "concept" LOL (USS Harpers Ferry) side note: SSDS was installed as well no school for it, we had to use built in training

IF the new MAD guided round for the 57mm cannon works as advertised then it would be an awesome compliment to the SeaRam.

I understand what you're saying about multiple targets Matt, but it isn't true that CIWS can't handle multiple incoming targets - it absolutely can. If the multiple threats are separated enough you'll run into similar issues of having to rotate the launcher / gun platform in the same manner. Anyways I've seen CIWS prioritize/switch between targets before and it's VERY fast. I think a few movies show this as well - and even though it's Hollywood, it would fire a burst and immediately switch to the second target, fire a burst, etc - SeaRAM would need to do the same, although obviously you gain some extra target separation capability with the missiles' maneuverability.

In American doctrine, defenses are threefold. Your Standard Missiles, SM6. Incoming attack will need to penetrate this before anything, and its effectively radar horizon limited. ESSM is next, with 50km range. They are quite numerous, quadpacked into a cell. Finally, terminal defense. Autocannons, SRBOC, and close defense missiles like these.

The rolling motion of the missile is so the seeker head can sweep the sky for the enemy. God knows how it maneuvers while rolling. That's prolly classified "Secret."

The weapon system at 0:38 is not a SEARAM. It is a RAM. SEARAM has a Phalanx radar "hat" on top of RAM.

I would much prefer marrying this RAM with a CWIS gun system. The gun system has a shorter range, which is kinda the point. Anything that gets past the first layer of defense, the RAM, then has to survive the gun. Much higher kill rate that way, twice the dice rolls.

I remember Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising. In it, Navy ships protecting a convey exhausted all of their missiles against harmless drones, and the real attack followed. If this system finds itself in hostile actin in the South China seas, they will need more than a dozen missiles.
