I built several of these Destroyers. Including the lead ship USS Arleigh Burke. Admiral Burke, accompanied by his wife came into my jobsite one day. We asked him what he would have done with with a ship like this in WW2. His response. If we had had a ship like this their wouldn’t have been a WW2. The lead ship was not only built in my hometown, it also designed there. Bath Maine, USA. Salute!

One point of order on your nomenclature. DDG-51 is a hull number. It refers to a specific ship, the USS Arleigh Burke in this case. The class is referred to by the name of the first operational ship in the class, not its hull number. EDIT: One other side note. The flank speed of the Arleigh Burke class is FAR more than 30 knots. The exact value is highly classified, but a really cool fact is that one of these ships can go from full flank speed to a dead stop within a hull length. You don't want to be aboard when they do this maneuver, but it's a standard part of sea trials for all new construction. I had a buddy who served as the weapons officer aboard one of these puppies and boy did he have some stories.

Hm, that explains it, the 30 kn seemed a bit slow for a ship like this

True story. Thanks to fully reversible pitched propellers, they don't have to wind down the turbines and switch gears in a transmission. They can keep the turbines churning and just reverse the wheels. They really can stop the ship in 1 boat length from flank.

It is not uncommon for classes to be known as the lead ship hull number, the cg-47 class, ffg-07 class as well as ddg-51 class are all used widely. In some cases the flight iia variant is known as the ddg-79 class

It is common practice in the Navy and Navy literature to refer to a ship class by either the first ship in the class, or the hull number designation.

Great presentation. As the son of the former Deputy Director of the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command, whose last job before retiring was wedding the Aegis system to the Ticonderoga itself, I heard of all the problems it had, especially the entire ship dropping it's load when Aegis was switched on. Good job and count me another new subscriber. Please do keep up the good work highlighting naval warfare ships and boats (ie. submarines).

Im proud to say i was a part of the team at G E lynn that designed and manufactured the prototype high speed gearing using the first gas turbine. We did this in the early eighties . I actually machined the main houseing which went fron the size of a small house ( old reduction gearing ) to the size of a single car garage. When we talked to the navy it was being built so the top brace could go water skiing. It is a bragging point im proud to claim. The ship was built so it could go thru any type weather, just batten down hatches and it was like a sub on top of the water

One interesting thing you left out about propulsion is CRP. It's the whole reason this ship is one if the fastest, most responsive and maneuverable ships in the fleet! "SU-24 gut cloose enuf to disabl senors!"- Is the common troll comment. What people don't understand is that unless there is a situation where the CO believes that the safety of his ship is in danger where there are sings of a weapons lock or a weapons release that indicated hostility against the vessel then they can't do jack sh*t unless they want to start a conflict with the respective origin of potential aggressor. The crewmen had confirmed visual contact on the aircraft and that it was unarmed, shooting down an unarmed aircraft would be an international outrage.

They had so many people asking them about US Donald Cook being Jammed that they even put on there website for a time that it was fake no Jamming pods work on SU-24. This all happen in the Black Sea....this happen a lot during the cold war. Fly by happen all the time, it just Russian saying to the US navy I'm watching.... Don't read what people say about the report of jamming the US ship, read the actual report and you can tell it fake. I built Aegis Cruisers, and worked at CSEDS (Combat System Engineering Development Site) for several years testing our Cruisers, Destroyers, and Japanese Destroyers. You did real good on this piece (you read well). The U.S. Navy Aegis platforms are the most dangerous Surface Combatants on the earth, and the only folks who don't mind taking them on are SSNs. Aegis Surface Combatants do (can engage) EVERYTHING even up to low earth orbit. My first ship (Cruiser) was the USS Belknap (CG-26). When we PRCOMed her the second time she sported a lot of original equipment for Aegis for testing. We had the birds (SM-2ER), computers, and lots of other equipment. The USS Ticonderoga (CG-47) was my second PRECOM. Home Sweet Home! She has now gone to the Breakers. I miss her already.

quantomic1106, the ships you see in this video are not "battleships." The last of those, the MISSOURI and WISCONSIN were decommissioned following the first Gulf War. These destroyers are much more modern and capable, with modern weapons on them. Though they ARE beautiful, (and menacing) the IOWA class Battleships are antiques! They were the last word in large-gun ships when built during WWII, but they are very outdated by today's standards.

I don't post comments very often, but felt compelled to do so with this episode. VERY WELL DONE. I can say that with absolute certainty because I am a US Navy veteran and served on board the USS Gonzolas DDG66 as a Firecontrolman (weapon systems specialist, not a firefighter) for 4 1/2 years. I fired that 5 inch gun as my job. I also had a lot of experience with the Phalanx/CIWS (Captain, It Won't Shoot!), the Tomahawk and Harpoon weapon systems as well as the SPY-1 Radar. And while there are a few minor points I may disagree with, for the majority of the information you provided you are spot on. Once again. Well Done!

Yeah movie was decent.Coolest scene was towards the end when they drop anchor while moving at full speed causing the boat to turn sharply into a 90° pivot at the anchor point *Warning, the follow up opinion on the topic get long* As cool as it was to see an Iowa class battleship pivot on a dime as shown in the movie, Im not sure how realistic that maneuver actually is. The sudden stress of stopping the ship's momentum of that massive, heavily armored battleship times its high speed, you'd think the anchor chain would snap or the chain's mount would rip off the ship. But if start to nitpick every detail of the movie then I can't ignore that poorly written romance plot. I wish they did better developing the romance storyline between the main character and his GF, the physical therapist working with disabled vets. I feel like it was only included just to check off a box requirement of all Hollywood action movies: [✔] Hero's love interest struggle secondary plot.

Very good overview of the Tin Cans of today. Your information was spot on at the time. There are now 92 active duty DDGs in service as of now March 2022. I'm glad they went back to all steel, the Adams class I served on was aluminum above the main deck too. I've seen 12.7 mm (.50 cal) Soviet Machine gun projectiles go through from starboard to port bulkheads, not very good for anything inside. We had two 35,000 hp steam turbine engines that pushed way past 33 kts because of the lightweight design, but the Aegis class can now even go faster than the Adams class, they are much faster than the reported speed, they really don't want to advertise just how fast these ships are, that was a big surprise to me too. I worked in Main Engine Control on an Adams class and we were pretty formidable back then too. Can Do!-Anytime!-Anywhere!

The DDG-51 Flt I&IIs have a flight deck but no helo hangar. One can land a helo on board, but you can't put it anywhere but back into the air. The Flt IIAs introduced the helo hangars and expanded capability significantly. The new Frigates will have double helo hangars to accomodate more air assets manned and unmanned. Great platform, and if the ship to copy by our adversaries. The Aegis Combat System contained in DDG-51 and the SPY-1 radar that feeds it information is incorporated in the navies of Norway, Spain, Australia, South Korea, and Japan. Aegis Ashore is a similar Ballistic Missile Defense contruct based on land in Romania and Poland, and soon Japan and South Korea.

Those torpedo launchers are a pain in the ass to load. It's basically an all day evolution requiring special rigging set up to hoist the torpedo into place for loading, a torpedo to be loaded onto and hauled out onto the weather decks on an undersized dolly. Great fun in high seas. It's all manual very physical labor, the loading rig is there for safety not mechanical advantage, and when you're done the loading rig has to be taken down and moved to the other side so that can be loaded, after which it all has to be taken down for the things to fire. I did hear they finally upgraded the actual torpedoes the things fire a few years ago because the old ones had a maximum range that was the same as the minimum range for most other torpedoes. Dunno - I wasn't a torpedoman, I just had to help out with the loading.

A few points to make... The SM-2 and SM-3 include the Patriot and THAAD anti ballistic missile missiles making that a very good defensive ship to protect carrier fleets or to park near enemy locations to take down ICBMs as they are launched. The THAAD system was used to take down a satellite that failed to deploy correctly that was in a low decaying orbit travelling at speeds 2x current ICBMs. With them capable of striking the missiles on the way up or in flight they are able to ignore decoys and negate part of the effectiveness of MIRV warheads. The other thing is the latest addition of the LaWS (Laser Weapon System). While the current lasers are only 33 KW and only capable of taking do small and medium sized drones the system is supposed to be upgraded to a 105 KW laser in 2020 and eventually to 300 KW giving it the ability to shoot down ICBM and jets as well as improved targeting systems to be able to strike incoming missiles and possibly artillery. Considering most carrier fleets have around 3 Arleigh Burke class of guided missile destroyers this makes for a VERY powerful offensive and defense system. The other point most people miss is the powerful radar. While you touched on this a bit. With the C-3 communication system they can work in conjunction with the Boeing E-3 Sentry (AWACS) as well as ground based THAAD systems and satellite radar. This let the US park a few of these near and enemy shoreline and with the Aegis Combat System and the SPY-1D multifunction passive electronically scanned array radar track every plane, missile, and even bomb within hundreds of miles. Very good video - very informative and good presentation. It definitely gives the civilian/novice an education about the Burke Class destroyer. For such a small ship, basically the same size as a frigate, the Navy has packed about as much weaponry on it as is possible. I would say, the only thing missing would be anti-motor boat weapons, such as 6 or 8 50 caliber gun mounts. Navy ships are constantly being harassed by Iranian navy motor boats, that such gun mounts would prove useful.

This is nicely done, but you asked for corrections. The walkaround vessel in the beginning has no helicopter facilities, so that's Flight I/II ship, DDG-51 through DDG-78. There is an infographic for a carrier task force that is fairly correct, but it shows a choice of Arleigh Burke or Spruance class, so it dates to before 2005. Early Arleigh Burkes are smaller than Ticonderoga class cruisers, the newer ones are larger. I don't think the Phalanx CWIS integrates with AEGIS, the whole point is that they're independent and work as long as they have power. I don't think the Harpoons are on anything after the DDG-78 - helicopters got that space.

I'd be interested to know if you can sort out WHICH Mk-41 VLS is in which position. There are three canister sizes - self-defense for SAMs and stuff (small), tactical (various SMs, medium sized) and strike (large, Tomahawk). Launch videos I've seen indicate the forward unit is either tactical or strike, makes sense that the smaller self defense stuff would be at the rear near the helicopter pad. Maybe a proper Navy man will answer, I'm just a nosy civilian.

@@gonebabygone4116 pretty sure the whole vls is modular, and the launch canisters are loaded with the missile inside them. For example 1 vls tube can hold 1 tomahawk or 4 essm.

Great first warship video! I definitely look forward to you trying more of this topic. If you want something controversial, take a look at the two Littoral Combat Ship designs. Very interesting ships but issues have arisen that bring in questions of their effectiveness. I also think it might be nice to look at the MV-22 Osprey especially with the little known addition of an underbelly mounted cannon. Keep up the great work!

I seem to remember (stand to be corrected) that the Arleigh Burke's were the first USN Destroyers (?Ships) with a pressurised citadel and seawater spray system for CBRN (surprising given that the T42s had them). Nice thing about the USN is that they don't cut the systems fitted to the ship's as they're building them (and build enough to work out the kinks and modify the design to improve it). Wish we could do the same (or perhaps they're just better than us at building ship's. Beautiful vessels!

The Charles F Adams and Farragut (late 50's / 60's) were replaced by the Spruance class destroyers. The Spruance class ships (70's/80's/90's)were replaced by the Burkes. The Spruance hull design was used for the original Ticonderoga AEGIS cruisers. The Spruances were scrapped due to age. The Burkes are being named after the Spruances (mostly).

One of the animations featured the TASM. Funny since the Navy hasn't used the "Tomahawk Anti-Ship cruise Missile" for a long time. The Harpoon was pretty much phased out as well. That submarine would have used a MK 48 ADCAP torpedo to sink that skimmer as well, unless they replaced it with something better. Hard to imagine with a torpedo designed to sink Soviet Alpha class subs. Fast and deep buggers they were. Then again my intel might be a bit limited. Pinned and proud in 98 on the SSN 709. Things do change after all.

The USS Sampson was due to come to NZ as part of the NZ Navy 75th Anniversary, but due to the Kaikora Earthquake, it went down to the south island to help out - which I was annoyed at as I was really looking forward to going abroad as part of the open day. Even worse was that before they formally entered Auckland Harbour, they had been moored near where I lived - so every day I got to see it chilling.

A crew of 328. That's pretty big, it must be quite difficult to get crew numbers down through automation on a warship, because it's not much less than say 30 years ago for an equivalent size ship. The USN plays some games with vessel classifications for the benefit of the Armed Services Committee, a vessel of this size and weapons load in another navy would propbably be classified as a cruiser.

Check out the new MK6 patrol boats that the Navy just commissioned. These 25-meter boats are used in the Litoral Zones and the latest proposed upgrades would include: Upgrading the two MK38 25mm Autocannon to (2) 30mm Fully Stabilized remotely fired auto cannon. Adding (2) Torpedos similar to the MK46 (IDK what the MK46 replacement torpedo is called), giving it a limited anti-ship capability. Adding (2) 4-round Hellfire Longbow laser guided missile launchers in a fixed installation on the roof. While these patrol boats aren't meant to take on other ships, they should be a very good replacement for the Cyclones patrolling the Gulf right now. They remind me of the old WW2 PT boats. I can see SF using these a great deal as well.

Trying to sneak up on a ship today is hilarious. They have enough underwater sonar listing post in the ocean. You could walk across the Atlantic Ocean and not get your feet wet..Radar systems that track anything that moves in 3 dimensional space. Unless birds can achieve 500 knots! As they are not racking an object. But the disturbance in the air or water!

One of the benefits of the VLS system is missile mission flexibility. Because they care "strike" depth Mk41, they can accommodate any VLS missile: Tomahawk, Standard missile family, Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM), and ASROC (rocket launched ASW torpedo.) While on a routine deployment, they may carry a healthy mix of everything, they can change their load out based on mission parameters. Going out to punish some wee dictator? load up on Tomahawks. ASW/AAW escort for a carrier? more SM/ESSM and ASROC, less Tomahawks. This provides a great flexibility. Also, as to SM missiles. The SM2 family is the base medium to long range SAM, the SM3 is dedicated to Ballistic missile defense and only carried on BMD ship (in the end all were NOT converted due to $$$) and the SM6 is the new kid on the block, intended to replace the SM2, with better fire control against both aircraft and cruise missiles, but due to cost, will probably not fully replace anytime soon. SM2 and 6 missiles can also be used in a surface to surface role, supplementing the Harpoon. The ESSM then fills the role of the short range SAM. Based on the Sea Sparrow, 4 can be packed into a single VLS tube.
