I'm surprised to hear no mention of Chants of Senaar's stealth sections. It's an amazing games, but the stealth parts basically disrupt the gameplay... I wanted a puzzle gaming where I'd translate languages, exploring chambers and talking to people to see what pieces I can add to the puzzle, not actively avoid some of them just to get past a chamber. Other than that, solid video, fewer games but a good analysis on them; I hope Raz's baby can let him and the Lady he lives with sleep full nights, by now.

My girlfriend loved Obra Dinn and golden Idol, so I recommended senaar for her. The stealth gameplay ended up making her give up on it, even though she thought the language puzzles were interesting.

Infants are notoriously finicky bosses, prone to dumping piles of extra tasks on you with no warning and being occasionally being dissatisfied with the quality of your work no matter how much effort you put in. When you do get a positive performance review though, it makes it all worthwhile.

Definitely understand the being more critical on things you like stuff, a bad game is just a ton of blemishes but a good game not reaching it's full potential is 1 or 2 blemishes that are THAT much more noticeable on an otherwise very enjoyable game. The amount of games that are scratching at a 9/10 but have lots of little issues is sadly too many.

congrats on the child(s)! godspeed, I can only nightmare what having two under two is like. also, on the whole "being harder on games than how bad they are" point, I've had this experience with games I thought I would universally love and come to the conclusion that I'm critical of their flaws because I care and do enjoy them. If they just sucked, I'd put them down. Because they were actually good, I noticed what wasn't perfect and I also just thought about them more in general because they were more engaging and held my interest more. I'd say that having specific criticism is actually something creators prefer, too. Like, if I said I didn't like Raz videos, that would be... unhelpful, but if I pointed out some specific trait that felt like a friction point for me, that would probably help you, or at least show you a difference of opinion or priority that a fan might have compared to your process. Anyways, I'm basically of the opinion that if you care enough to have specific criticism of parts of a game (or any work of art!) that's evidence that you cared more about it than average, and that's a good thing.

Chants of Sennaar sits in a weird place for me. I played the game without using the journal pictures (I still used the part where i could write guesses) which made it a very enjoyable experience for me. Without a confirmation that you're correct, it really feels like you're constantly updating your understanding of each language, going back and refining each guess as more context comes up. If the game had ended one area earlier, I would've loved it. But the last area felt so bland and uninspired from a language solving perspective and it really put a damper on my experience. I'm not sure how the language solving feels when you do use the journal, but without the journal, the way you solve the language feels like it has no connection to the rest of the game at all. Overall I enjoyed my time with Chants of Sennaar, I just wish that the worst part of the game wasn't also the last area.
@lucaslourenco89187 ай бұрын
Yeah, the last area does feel like an afterthought, from a gameplay perspective; it's important and necessary for the story, but all other areas are rich and full of little secrets that you have to unveil, the last part is just puzzles for puzzle sake, and you don't even have to delve deep into the writing system's gimmick, just one table to compare shapes. I really liked the first level, where you have no idea of what's going on, and you start to decipher that "maybe this means negative", "does it mean plural?", "this is related to people because of these lines." That being said, as a language nerd (and a professional translator), it's one of my favorite games, which I wish I could experience for the first time again. Except for the stealth parts. I still don't understand the inputs for walking stealthily or jumping to the next location, and i don't really care that much, I just wish that wasn't a thing.

The timed events in Penny's seems like it would be an easy fix with an option to pause the game when the dialogue box pops up. Seems like a strange choice to (I assume) prioritize the movement being uninterrupted all the time.
@destinyhntr7 ай бұрын
I also loved the translating part of the Chants game but the gameplay itself (having to run around, stealth, slow movement) just took away the enjoyment for me. I would have preferred the game solely focusing on the language aspect (though understand why they didn't do that).

Well, now that we're half way through the season... Day one picks: I picked hunter (yeah I know guys like him don't win anymore but he did okay until he didn't) and my wife picked Tiff, so no luck for us as is usual. How are you liking this season? We started letting our 4 year old watch an episode after the baby goes to bed on occasion. He's really enjoying survivor nights. He's obsessed with Jeff Probsy.
