Just FYI, they updated the RAM info on their website AFTER people began receiving their devices. The only reason they changed it is because people realized from benchmarking apps that their WiFi models only had 6GB of RAM as opposed to 8GB which was still advertized on the website. Once people reached out to Razer asking about the discrepancy, the company stealth update the specs online.
@RetroGameCorps

Thank you for the clarification, I didn’t realize Razer had already shipped pre-orders before making that change. That’s even worse. Pinning for visibility!
@ekinteko

@@RetroGameCorps This. The Razer Edge Wifi was already somewhat poor-value to begin with, so their response with the RAM fiasco sealed the deal for the mainstream crowd. And I agree, that had this same device been released 2-Years ago but with a QSD 888 chipset instead, for its time, it wouldn't have been so bad.Comparisons to the AYN Odin Pro come to mind. Contrarily, if they released it now with 8GB RAM and a USD $300 MSRP price, then it would make more sense. But then it's double the price of the Retroid Pocket 3+ and I don't think you're getting double the experience. Thanks Russ for the comparisons, and the return of the Venn diagram!!! I believe for the majority of your audience a better combination is something like the iPhone 11 Max (very affordable on Used Market) to get access to iOS Ecosystem and Telephony, then have a Retroid Pocket 3+ to get access to the Android Ecosystem, and a separate machine for gaming at home (Valve SteamDeck, PS5, Windows Gaming PC, etc etc). Essentially you're skipping Android on your phone, getting an extra ecosystem, and having a separate pocketable device to streamline your gaming experience which just happens to have access to the Android Ecosystem. What do you think about such a combination?
@jamilpointer1354
@jamilpointer1354 Жыл бұрын
This is kind of partially true. Russ had it right in the video. They actually did change it before the official launch. The people who really got screwed were those that preordered. It’s a shitty situation but I don’t believe they intentionally misled anyone.

Both razer and Qualcomm were secretive about the SoC specs too, and didn’t bother to correct benchmarks and specs floating around that suggested it was an overclocked 8 gen 1 rather than the 888 it actually is
@papa_NCF
@papa_NCF Жыл бұрын
@@jamilpointer1354 I don't think it was intentional either, but I'm 99% sure they changed it after people reached out to Razer support after receiving the devices. The folks in the Retro Handheld Discord were documenting stuff pretty well and from what I remember, the specs were not changed prior to devices shipping out. Edit: My bad, yes you're technically right, us folks who received their devices first were the pre-orders. So yes it technically was changed before the "official launch" but people still paid money and received their devices by that point.

Should probably mention that, if you plan on leaving the controller always connected, it drains the battery and affects standby time. Note that this isn't a problem specific to the razer edge, it's an overall Android issue.

Yeah razer customer service is the worst ever. I tried to order their new 3d speaker for $400 using both a card and paypal and they kept blocking it 'for security reasons', even though the same cards work everywhere else. After several emails (the first few they avoided answering my questions completely), they said I was supposed to call my bank and get an authorization code that they could then use to 'unlock' their security so I could purchase it. I gave up and instead purchased a similar LG speaker.

Thanks for the review Russ, always interesting and informed. With some design panache and more focus on retro gaming this could have been pretty awesome. Love your review as always. I’ve had horrible experience with Razer. I had a Razer blade 2022 17 inch with 3080ti. Dead pixel and horrible hardware stuttering. Then after great difficulty was able to return. Bought 2nd one, was working fine for few weeks then had issues. Then 3rd one, came with dead pixel. After about 1.5 month the graphics card failed. Luckily was able to return at Best Buy. Got MSI GE 67 with oled screen. Been using it for several months, no issues whatsoever. I’m saying this because Razer has horrible customer service and their products have poor quality control. Worse, I don’t think they have a great engineering team. Their products look great and that’s why people buy them but they should stick to accessories only.

If you activate sync content to framerate or something like that on Retroarch, and you speed up a game, it's going to display at 144 FPS when fast forwarding which looks really smooth and makes it easier to actually play at 2x and 3x speeds for example.

I have really been loving my 5g so far but their are a lot of things missing. It sucked that it took so long for the edge to get the update for the virtual controller that the normal kishi v2 got weeks before hand. Drivers for skyline and vita3k have been really hit or miss. But when it comes to ps2, Dreamcast,game cube and some wii it really shines. I even find myself playing a lot more android native games and having a blast. For retro titles i have anbernic 35xx with garlic os that matches up with them a lot better. The razer edge to me is more of a multi media centric device than it is a true dedicated gaming handheld. It nice to be able to just use the table part to read a pdf, web brows, or watch a video on break at work without looking like a total nerd like I would doing the same on something like a steam deck or even a ayn Odin. It just feels like a very different market for it compared to a steam deck. You are buying a powerful small android tablet first and getting a pretty great controller add on bundled in.

XD the way you poke fun at Stubbs. I’ve been curious about this device since it was first announced and I wasn’t exactly sold on getting this. I thought about getting an android phone and hook up a controller to it, but I didn’t wanna deal with the headache of having a carrier different from mine, which is why dedicated handhelds are so appealing. Since I already own the Odin Pro and the Steam Deck, I already have the best of both worlds when it comes to gaming on the go. I was especially surprised at how much less screen you’d get from playing 4:3 content on the RE and having the storage in Fat32 really limits your game library if you have a lot of big ones. The only other device I see myself getting right now would be the RP3+(assuming Retroid doesn’t release a 4 model soon). Anyway awesome review!

Just get a used flagship off eBay or Amazon and don't activate it. Unactivated Android phones act like happy little WiFi tablets, no different than a dedicated Android handheld does. I'm on Verizon but my emulation phone is an unactivated AT&T phone. Your Odin Pro uses the SD 845 out of 2017- 2018 flagships (albeit the cooling and GPU overclock means it's going to perform better than any 2018 flagship). An S20FE with the SD865 can be found for low $100-something on eBay in good condition. Phones with the SD855 can be found under $100.

The GOAT tech KZbinr, hands down. Seriously. Between the in-depth content AND cameos for cats, margarine,and Vinn Diagrams, nobody beats Russ. Even though I’m not the target demographic for this device-I’m happy with my handheld situation between my PS Vita and my Steam Deck-each and every Retro Game Corps video is worth watching start to finish. Bravo. Interesting fun fact-the Razer Edge branding was initially used on their maiden voyage into tablet gaming with a larger, Windows-based device several years ago. Interesting that Razer shifted to Android and something far more pocketable. I agree with your conclusive question-“Who is this for?” I don’t know the Android space very well, but are folks willing to pay a Steam Deck price for the platform and portability? Might this have turned out more intriguing if the hardware mirrored Razer’s prior Edge-an x86 handheld entering going toe-to-toe with the Deck proper?

I don't understand Razer's thought process here. Why make the controller detachable? I guess it kinda future proofs it, as you could attach it to a different phone in the future, but otherwise it just costs more than an all-in-one device would. If they were using the existing Kishi v2 it might make sense, but this is a different variant, so they have to manufacture both of these now, which is going to cost more.

All you have to do is make it stretch it to fit the screen. As long as you have a high PPi device and running at a descent internal resolution it will look very good.

I wish you had done a direct comparison of it with a regular flagship phone (like iPhone 14 or google pixel) as far as screen size and gaming. The one you used in the video is a 'gaming phone' so it's a little different.. I think for most people, it's competing against the phone more than anything.

I would say that the 2-6 hours of battery life playing on a Steam Deck aren't necessarily a bad thing here, since that's coming directly from the kind of games you're playing. If you're someone who's gonna be playing mostly emulated systems and low-demanding games, like myself, that battery life can go up to 7h41 mins in my experience when emulating mostly GBA. If you really wanted to play some very specific android games I don't think that an Android emulator is completely out of the question with a Steam Deck and overall your game library is always gonna be much wider at that same price point. As you've mentioned, using a Razer Kishi isn't that different to using the Edge and honestly, I think that the people who fall under the very specific use case of the Edge have a much better array of options at lower prices too

I don't see a market for this device, With the new Snapdragon Gen 2 coming out. a Razr Kishi V2 and a Samsung S23 ( as a main phone that you need anyways ), also there's a Redmagic Pro 8 with the Gen 2 snapdragon. Both of these device's cost more, but are also Phones in and of themselves and the Redmagic Pro 8 at least has a 6500mah battery but crappy cameras.

The more I look at the Razor Edge, the more that it's optimized to play native android games primarly. That would mean this device would be for someone who mostly plays native android games and wants a handheld specifically for that purpose, rather than use their phone. Gotta admit, while I have my own share of consoles, something like this makes me tempted to really explore what's on play pass. Oddly enough, this means the Edge's real competition might just be android tablets.

I don’t really get the problem with running 4 x 3 games on systems like the Razer edge, or any smart phone or display for that matter. I personally prefer playing them at their original resolution. I play MMPR Fighting Edition on it from the SNES, and the controls were already configured. I did a little better than I usually do because of the physical controls. I love the Razer Edge. One advantage it has over steam deck is taking it out of the controller and using it like a typical Android device on the go. All that being said, I’m not sure if I’ll be getting an Android phone again after paying off my iPhone or sticking with iOS and getting another Android gaming device. Oh, and I got it through Verizon.

The display ratio makes no apparent sense. The only thing that would fit is widescreen movies, but the corners are curved, so messes that up. The $600 price is WAY overpriced IMO compared to the competition. Get a Deck and a Retroid Pocket 3+ for $50 less! Added: I'm guessing epic discounts on this, unless Verizon has a deal with Razer to be able to return them.

Honestly, I watched this review because it was an RGC video, not because I care about the device. I'm not in the USA, so it's probably easier for me to get a Retroid (not to mention cheaper). It's got one major plus compared to smartphone gaming - you're not wasting your main phone's battery. That's the only plus. It's just another big phone sized device to carry, with phone like qualities. Without the phone part. It's a gigantic no for me.

A couple of questions and a comment: I noticed when you were going through the Nexus app that you had "Grid: Autosport". I've been playing it using a GameSir X2 Pro. The game doesn't recognize the analog triggers as anything other than buttons. To get analog throttle and brake I had to map those controls to the right stick like old Gran Turismos. Which is fine; but, I'm wondering, is the Kishi V2 similarly limited? Android since 10 has had a basic desktop mode built-in unless it's been specifically removed by the manufacturer. You can access it through Developer Options. Does that work on the Edge and do scaling properly? I enjoyed your review. Honestly; I actually really like what I'm seeing with the Razer. I don't much like the price, but, I don't like the Deck at any price. If I'm paying that much for a handheld anything it'd better be able to make a phone call or have a screen the size of a pizza. You ask who this is for, it's for someone who doesn't have a Steam account, who doesn't do much with PCs in general, and who is heavily invested in the Android ecosystem. Basically, it's for me. I wish the aspect ratio was more rational for emulation (18:9 like a 2018 flagship would've been a decent compromise between Android gaming and retro gaming) and I wish the Verizon version had full telephony so I could just have one do it all device. But, the Deck can't do those things either and it's comically big too. I think I'd really love the Edge, just not at launch pricing.

Hi Matt, thanks for the questions and suggestions. Playing Grid: Autosport works perfectly, the controls register automatically and the triggers are recognized as analog. It's a wonderful experience! You are able to force desktop mode via the Developer Options, thanks for the tip. When testing it out, it provided a second screen on my output monitor, that was the generic Razer wallpaper. It output to a 20:9 aspect ratio, just like when mirroring the screen.

@@RetroGameCorps Thank you for testing "Grid" for me and letting me know it's my controller and not the game that's acting up. The X2 Pro does the same thing in the Redream emulator and I had to use QuickEdit Pro to tweak the configuration files to manually tell it to recognize the triggers as an axis instead of as buttons. I couldn't find controller bindings in the config files of "Grid". Right stick drive works fine though. And the X2 Pro works flawlessly with every other game and emulator, so I'm still really happy with it.

My experienced opinion: ARM chips belong in portable devices where battery matters. X86 belongs on a desk. This device isn't worth the 400$ asking price but it along with the new chip is a good concept for future ARM based devices not made by the walled prison brand. Small footnote: People may be able setup a class action or at least a false advertising suit against Razer here. I'm not a lawyer but as far as I'm aware. You don't get to send an email after the fact about it being an error on your site. It would be another thing if the device looked different in colour than the website and they had a tiny message at the bottom of the product page saying "product may look different to the naked eye." There, they could say they had the message. Here, they only "corrected" the "mistake" after you had already purchased the product, and in a scummy way, forcing you to buy from them again if you wanted to be reimbursed partially.

I actually really like the Edge. I'm only not buying now because of financial considerations. I use an older Android flagship (LG V35) paired with a GameSir X2 Pro controller (it's like a better Kishi V2 - bigger triggers and a much wider brace that means it's not nearly as wobbly). With PS1 and PS2 games, quite a few (especially the latter) had native widescreen and I've had good luck in that most of the games I want to play so far that didn't have native widescreen have patches instead. My advice, if you're having second thoughts about the Edge then look into the Ayn Odin Pro or buy a used late model flagship from eBay, Amazon Renewed, or Swappa and pair it up with the GameSir X2 Pro controller.
