Just FYI, they updated the RAM info on their website AFTER people began receiving their devices. The only reason they changed it is because people realized from benchmarking apps that their WiFi models only had 6GB of RAM as opposed to 8GB which was still advertized on the website. Once people reached out to Razer asking about the discrepancy, the company stealth update the specs online.

@@RetroGameCorps This. The Razer Edge Wifi was already somewhat poor-value to begin with, so their response with the RAM fiasco sealed the deal for the mainstream crowd. And I agree, that had this same device been released 2-Years ago but with a QSD 888 chipset instead, for its time, it wouldn't have been so bad.Comparisons to the AYN Odin Pro come to mind. Contrarily, if they released it now with 8GB RAM and a USD $300 MSRP price, then it would make more sense. But then it's double the price of the Retroid Pocket 3+ and I don't think you're getting double the experience. Thanks Russ for the comparisons, and the return of the Venn diagram!!! I believe for the majority of your audience a better combination is something like the iPhone 11 Max (very affordable on Used Market) to get access to iOS Ecosystem and Telephony, then have a Retroid Pocket 3+ to get access to the Android Ecosystem, and a separate machine for gaming at home (Valve SteamDeck, PS5, Windows Gaming PC, etc etc). Essentially you're skipping Android on your phone, getting an extra ecosystem, and having a separate pocketable device to streamline your gaming experience which just happens to have access to the Android Ecosystem. What do you think about such a combination?

Edit: My bad, yes you're technically right, us folks who received their devices first were the pre-orders. Since I already own the Odin Pro and the Steam Deck, I already have the best of both worlds when it comes to gaming on the go. I was especially surprised at how much less screen you’d get from playing 4:3 content on the RE and having the storage in Fat32 really limits your game library if you have a lot of big ones. I would say that the 2-6 hours of battery life playing on a Steam Deck aren't necessarily a bad thing here, since that's coming directly from the kind of games you're playing. If you're someone who's gonna be playing mostly emulated systems and low-demanding games, like myself, that battery life can go up to 7h41 mins in my experience when emulating mostly GBA. If you really wanted to play some very specific android games I don't think that an Android emulator is completely out of the question with a Steam Deck and overall your game library is always gonna be much wider at that same price point. As you've mentioned, using a Razer Kishi isn't that different to using the Edge and honestly, I think that the people who fall under the very specific use case of the Edge have a much better array of options at lower prices too

I don't see a market for this device, With the new Snapdragon Gen 2 coming out. a Razr Kishi V2 and a Samsung S23 ( as a main phone that you need anyways ), also there's a Redmagic Pro 8 with the Gen 2 snapdragon. Both of these device's cost more, but are also Phones in and of themselves and the Redmagic Pro 8 at least has a 6500mah battery but crappy cameras.

The more I look at the Razor Edge, the more that it's optimized to play native android games primarly. That would mean this device would be for someone who mostly plays native android games and wants a handheld specifically for that purpose, rather than use their phone. Gotta admit, while I have my own share of consoles, something like this makes me tempted to really explore what's on play pass. Oddly enough, this means the Edge's real competition might just be android tablets.

Honestly, if I had preordered the WiFI model I would just have gone a bit on a "Karen mode" and told Razer to shove the thing up their asses and give me a full refund. If I order a product and recieve less than what I ordered then I don't want it. If they make a mistake it's their fault, not the customers.

One thing that should be mentioned is that the Performance Mode is actually useless, it never actually improves performance, just changes the CPU Governor to Performance which just makes it less efficient.

I don’t really get the problem with running 4 x 3 games on systems like the Razer edge, or any smart phone or display for that matter. I personally prefer playing them at their original resolution. I play MMPR Fighting Edition on it from the SNES, and the controls were already configured. I did a little better than I usually do because of the physical controls. I love the Razer Edge. One advantage it has over steam deck is taking it out of the controller and using it like a typical Android device on the go. All that being said, I’m not sure if I’ll be getting an Android phone again after paying off my iPhone or sticking with iOS and getting another Android gaming device. Oh, and I got it through Verizon.

If this were a properly integrated device with a better aspect ratio then it would be more compelling. I'm sick of these phone-with-attachment devices - not only is the screen real estate wasted, the thing is super long and clunky. Why the hell is it so hard to find a 3x2 screen and slap the internals into a case with buttons?!

The display ratio makes no apparent sense. The only thing that would fit is widescreen movies, but the corners are curved, so messes that up. The $600 price is WAY overpriced IMO compared to the competition. Get a Deck and a Retroid Pocket 3+ for $50 less! Added: I'm guessing epic discounts on this, unless Verizon has a deal with Razer to be able to return them.
@jwill7998 Жыл бұрын
That aspect ratio is a bit longer than I'd refer. I'd also prefer one cohesive unit rather than a tablet with a detachable controller.

Honestly, I watched this review because it was an RGC video, not because I care about the device. I'm not in the USA, so it's probably easier for me to get a Retroid (not to mention cheaper). It's got one major plus compared to smartphone gaming - you're not wasting your main phone's battery. That's the only plus. It's just another big phone sized device to carry, with phone like qualities. Without the phone part. It's a gigantic no for me.

A couple of questions and a comment: I noticed when you were going through the Nexus app that you had "Grid: Autosport". I've been playing it using a GameSir X2 Pro. The game doesn't recognize the analog triggers as anything other than buttons. To get analog throttle and brake I had to map those controls to the right stick like old Gran Turismos. Which is fine; but, I'm wondering, is the Kishi V2 similarly limited? Android since 10 has had a basic desktop mode built-in unless it's been specifically removed by the manufacturer. You can access it through Developer Options. Does that work on the Edge and do scaling properly? I enjoyed your review. Honestly; I actually really like what I'm seeing with the Razer. I don't much like the price, but, I don't like the Deck at any price. If I'm paying that much for a handheld anything it'd better be able to make a phone call or have a screen the size of a pizza. You ask who this is for, it's for someone who doesn't have a Steam account, who doesn't do much with PCs in general, and who is heavily invested in the Android ecosystem. Basically, it's for me. I wish the aspect ratio was more rational for emulation (18:9 like a 2018 flagship would've been a decent compromise between Android gaming and retro gaming) and I wish the Verizon version had full telephony so I could just have one do it all device. But, the Deck can't do those things either and it's comically big too. I think I'd really love the Edge, just not at launch pricing.

Hi Matt, thanks for the questions and suggestions. Playing Grid: Autosport works perfectly, the controls register automatically and the triggers are recognized as analog. It's a wonderful experience! You are able to force desktop mode via the Developer Options, thanks for the tip. When testing it out, it provided a second screen on my output monitor, that was the generic Razer wallpaper. It output to a 20:9 aspect ratio, just like when mirroring the screen.
@mattdavis9601 Жыл бұрын
@@RetroGameCorps Thank you for testing "Grid" for me and letting me know it's my controller and not the game that's acting up. The X2 Pro does the same thing in the Redream emulator and I had to use QuickEdit Pro to tweak the configuration files to manually tell it to recognize the triggers as an axis instead of as buttons. I couldn't find controller bindings in the config files of "Grid". Right stick drive works fine though. And the X2 Pro works flawlessly with every other game and emulator, so I'm still really happy with it.

I commute to work 1 our each way, and sometimes i sleep at the job and pick up a second shift, so ultimately the best thing for me is that I always have a constant 5g Verizon connection with great speed, and I even have shadow PC on it and it works great, so i guess it's pretty cool for commuters, again the coolest thing for me is the 5g to go.

My experienced opinion: ARM chips belong in portable devices where battery matters. X86 belongs on a desk. This device isn't worth the 400$ asking price but it along with the new chip is a good concept for future ARM based devices not made by the walled prison brand. Small footnote: People may be able setup a class action or at least a false advertising suit against Razer here. I'm not a lawyer but as far as I'm aware. You don't get to send an email after the fact about it being an error on your site. It would be another thing if the device looked different in colour than the website and they had a tiny message at the bottom of the product page saying "product may look different to the naked eye." There, they could say they had the message. Here, they only "corrected" the "mistake" after you had already purchased the product, and in a scummy way, forcing you to buy from them again if you wanted to be reimbursed partially.

kinda seems like a piece of shit ngl. Of you want android gaming and emulation to ps2 the pimax portal looks good. The company seems to have done a pretty solid job with it.
@mattdavis9601 Жыл бұрын
I actually really like the Edge. I'm only not buying now because of financial considerations. I use an older Android flagship (LG V35) paired with a GameSir X2 Pro controller (it's like a better Kishi V2 - bigger triggers and a much wider brace that means it's not nearly as wobbly). With PS1 and PS2 games, quite a few (especially the latter) had native widescreen and I've had good luck in that most of the games I want to play so far that didn't have native widescreen have patches instead. My advice, if you're having second thoughts about the Edge then look into the Ayn Odin Pro or buy a used late model flagship from eBay, Amazon Renewed, or Swappa and pair it up with the GameSir X2 Pro controller.
