After recent encounters with large venomous snakes I tried out some Snake Gaiters as I am often in high risk areas for snake bites while filming. They are light and collapse into an easily packable size taking up little space and adding little weight when you head out into Nature.

Correction - that is actually a black vulture carrying off what appears to be a type of "needle fish", not an Osprey as I mentioned when out in the field. That is actually quite rare, in real time I just assumed a raptor carrying off a fish was an Osprey which is quite common, but reviewing the film later that's a Black Vulture, who mostly eat carrion, but on rare occasion will grab something to eat that's still alive :-) BB

Have you tested these gaiters?? If so please let me know, I need these almost got bit the other day, but I want to know they work. They shouldn't be able to be pierced with a needle/💉.

Im a geologist in Arizona, I spend my days out in the desert where literally everything wants to bit, sting and eat you. You should get yourself a good pair of western boots for those gaiters. Especially down in the swamp areas you have coral snakes as we do out here that can easily bit the exposed part of the back of your ankles, in az we have 2 foot long desert giant centipedes which pack a nasty punch, they will even kill small dogs. Out here I could easily see one go right for that exposed part of your ankle, I dont want to worry you but as my daddy always said its better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it.

Walking slowly helps clear your path of snakes, it gives them a chance to hear and feel you coming and to scurry off before you arrive

True, I wouldn't use these for typical well marked trail hiking that would be overkill, but I spend a lot of time miles from public roads in wet tall grass and woodlands - most Florida "trails" are pretty primitive. Cottonmouths don't scurry and have even struck at me while passing on my bike. BB

Sometimes, but for sure not always, as per my own personal experience. Actually, I haven't had one rattlesnake "scurry" away from me upon meeting me on the trail. They've always stayed put, gotten up in the defensive strike position, or paused at length before ambling along on its way.

We live in a very rural area part swamp part woods in Florida,and have a mated pair that hang around.We save all table scraps and they follow me out to where I feed them,and walk right up to the food .They bring their young up and show them.When the young get older,the pair run the off…

James, are you talking about a mating pair of Black Vultures? I'm interested because last year and now this year there is a pair of Black Vultures getting ready to nest again in the "jungle" behind the Backyard. Planning on doing a video on it soon. I understand they lay eggs on the ground in hidden areas under saw palmettos and pine straw etc, but never seen the nest or the little ones. What has been your experience. BB

Central Florida, Florida is so big and diverse it depends on what you want. There are still plenty of more rural and wild places, but the general trend is people will just keep coming for the weather and the now diversified economy and low taxes. BB

Deal with a lot of rattlesnakes here in Arizona. The only thing I don't like about gaiters is I feel like the top/side of my foot is exposed even if I have a decent hiking boot. Smaller venomous snakes don't strike as high it seems, they tend to strike forward. We throw on the snake boots when we're in areas that are a bit sketchy. Kind of a pain (literally) but definitely gives us peace of mind. Do you feel exposed in those or not so much?
@MyBackyardBirding

There are flaps that hang down and cover up most of the lace area to provide more protection depends on size of person and shoe/foot to a degree have to keep them down on the tongue. BB

Have you tried them in water/ swamp ? The buckles are too far forward they will snag and what keeps them on your feet - there is no buckle under your heel?

I use these on hiking boots for relatively dry land around water in Florida or in grasslands and desert brush etc. I think if I was going to spend a lot of time actually wading through water especially that is choked with grass and brush I might go with actual waders or come up with another novel approach. @jamesfranklin9855
@jamesfranklin9855 2 жыл бұрын
No jumping spiders. Just water moccasins,rattlesnakes,coral snakes, copperhead snakes,all poisonous. Alligators,bears,coyotes,cougars( smaller than their cousins out west ) Black Widow spiders,Brown Recluse spiders all poisonous. Crocodiles in extreme South Florida. That’s just land critters.Atlantic Ocean’s another story.Plus 100+ (f ) and 90- 100 percent humidity during the summer.Occasionally a destructive hurricane and tornadoes.That’s all the bad critters I can think of right off the bat…plus terrible traffic
