Really interesting weapon, as many types of weapons constructed in Sweden
@AdurianJ7 ай бұрын
The 57mm autocannon left service in the 1960's long before the RBS 70 entered service. The 40mm guns where retained up until around 2000 in parallel with RBS 70 because they had all weather capability as they used Radar. The PS-90/Girfaffe-75 was the radar for the RBS-90 system and for some 40mm batteries initially. The RBS 70 never left Swedish service only the RBS-90 system did and this was brought back a few years ago. Before leaving service the RBS-90 system was part of mixed RBS-70/90 battalions on the divisional level.

RBS 70 was initially combined with the 20 mm lv-akan (AA autocannon) m/40 in the half platoon AA-units in the AA-batalion in the Swedish army brigade. So there was two RBS 70 and two 20 mm AA-guns in each AA-platoon.

In the Infantry Brigade 77 system it was actually a SAM/AA Company consisting of 3 platoons with 3 troops (tropp) each consisting of 1 RBS70 and 1 20mm cannon. The Company could either be kept together or split for example with 1 platoon per Infantry Battalion. Later a RBS90 Company was added expanding the Brigade resource to a SAM Battalion

it is still man portable, albeit you need several men to carry it but you won't need a dedicated vehicle. It trades portability for range, firepower and flexibility as it can fulfill the task of the MANPADS and SHORAD at the same time. The beam riding guidance makes countermeasures pretty much useless compared to traditional infrared and radar missiles because the warhead isn't guiding itself but the operator on the ground is, hence why they need a tri-pod to stabilize the aiming system.

MANPADS are good against enemy aircraft, drones, missiles etc, but one should also consider value of cost. RBS-70 missile would be updward of US$ 3 million but an armed drone can be cheap, from say US$ 5000 up, so attrition cost will end up being higher to take it down. Drones do not fly very high, so imagine taking down Drone that costs $ 5000 with missile that costs 3 million, for say taking down 1000 drones, the cost to drone operators $5 million but cost to missiles $3 billion !!! But on the other hand a modernised Bofors 40 mm gun linked to targeting radar will be way cheap to use, & able to take down the target at much cheaper cost. So I think the 40mm or even higher caliber guns with better programable ammo can be more cost worthy than missile specially for cheap targets liek drones.
@znail46757 ай бұрын
The entire system costs $3 million but the missile is not the main cost in that as one of the main advantages of the system is that the missile is simpler without a seeker as it's the launcher that steers the missile.
@janssonsamuel80057 ай бұрын
Yes and no. 40mm system or 57mm system going to cost more to build.you want build go wagon for it say a cv90. And in the end you going to want some kind off radar on every unit. so a cost of 10.000.000 to 30.000.000. And the missile cost is 100.000 for every unit. So you can shoot 70 to 300 missiles for every unit before you are on cv9040AA start cost. So you can buy more off RBS70. It have a longer range. easy to hide. And going to less off a target for the enemy. And a RBS70 can take down more targets. Think a quad 5ocal like in ww2 with a moderns sight on a toyota pickup had been good ide. low cost and it only roll is anti dron.
@yamahass667 ай бұрын
And a drone did strike a 200 milion radar system in Russia. What is your point?
@janssonsamuel80057 ай бұрын
@@yamahass66 That is the problem that get miss. not the cost off the shoot but the cost off the hit. And the battlefield in UA is so big that you need diffrent system. And he miss in the cost. it is 100.000.000. but you miss every thing. And UA send 1000 drone in only need hit stuff for 100.000.000 or force them to use money to shoot down your and 100 milions go fast in war. like you sad one radar system is 200 milions.

I think Canada just purchased this piece of junk, does not look that portable to me, if Canada did buy it, it must be cheap.
@74Darkman7 ай бұрын
It is definately not "junk", which was proven in Ukraine. All weapon systems have their pros and cons, right? In this case the definite advantage of the RBS 70 is that it is unjammable. Not affected by chaff, flares or anything else.
@wmtford40437 ай бұрын
Canada is buying this system because it requires something urgently to help protect the multinational brigade in Latvia. Canada likely held a very limited competition in which the primary driver was how quickly vendors could deliver a functional system. (Raytheon was quickly ruled out because it was busy replenishing US Army stocks of the Stinger MANPADS, so many of which had been sent to Ukraine. Who knows what offers Thales or MBDA put together.) Canada will eventually purchase a more comprehensive ground-based air defence solution for its army. But for the immediate requirement, the Saab offer of RBS 70NG was evidently judged the best. When so many nations are chasing so few vendors, choices will inevitably be limited.

This channel loves to label random unknown weapons from Nordic countries, which are never proven in action & has no market success, as "legends". @WeaponDetective7 ай бұрын

@@thantzweaung9080 "No Nordic nation (maybe except Norway) has been under real threat of invasion after 1945, regardless of their military capabilities." This is simply not true. @@magnusk4352 USSR was never that strong, it couldn't even install friendly political allies in Finland in 1945, let alone invade a nation with no land border. NATO was also busy elsewhere.
