Thing with jet drives, theres only so much power the pump can take before cavitation starts. So more power doesn't always mean more better, kinda have to find the sweet spot when performance stops its peak and starts to decrease. Also weight distribution is key, try moving the battery around, forward backward to stop the porpoising, but too much weight too far forward will make it unstable. Its a Balancing act! Cheers

Add a scoop in the intake grate, also you might not have enough weight in the boat. Run two of the same batteries in parallel one on each side same voltage but double the capacity that will keep it from porpoising. How do you not scoop will definitely help as well. Made a big difference on my jet ski.

I know this is an old video, but being a New Zealander I know a few things about jet boats, the air in the impeller is from it being revved to high causing small air pockets behind the impeller blade, once these get big enough the pump loses its prime and can damage the prop. This phenomenon can cause race boats jet drive units to damage the impeller from heavy oxidation and warping. the solution, bigger jet unit and lower rpm.

Like all boats in scale the hulls seem more bouyant, I've got a 36" flat bottom with dual Graupner drives, I use a small set of kitchen scales(2) to balance the boat, had to use a couple grams of self adhesive wheel weights to achieve a great running balance. To much battery power doesn't work on boats, back of the voltage to stop cavitation

cavitation is the propeller creating a low pressure pocket to the point of the water boiling
@johnathanmyers37946 жыл бұрын
Yeah so i would put the weight just under the baxk of the wheel house maybe a pound and for the propeller the pitch is key for the less cavitation its about thrust of course i work as a commerical fisherman that drives a skiff and the differents in how many blades it jas along with the pitch play around with the pitch and see if you can get the keel of the boat a little deeper in the water and maybe a nosel on the output of the jet

@thegooserider72456 жыл бұрын
ROTAXD . It’s one of the two for sure 👍
@D3moknight6 жыл бұрын
If you want to improve the handling of your boat in the video, it looks like it needs the weight shift a little forward. This should get the nose down and stop the porpoising. When the bow bounces up and down, that is probably what is letting air under your hull and into the pump.
@chromosometheif86596 жыл бұрын
Try putting the battery in the front so it stops bobbing while driving
@ROTAXD6 жыл бұрын
Chromosome theif the "bobbing" is called porpoising. That actuallu happens when a boat is just underpowered enough to almost get up on plane...but not quite. This can also happen if the boat isn't trimmed right. You're right on moving the battery...but I'd move it aft just a touch.
@mechanicalking6 жыл бұрын
My jet ski does that around 60mph and its so annoying but when you put stuff up front it helps
@Sackmatters5 жыл бұрын
ROTAXD false. It has nothing to do with being under Powered. It is strictly on the weight ratio and it’s because of the pitch of the jet nozzle.
@MachoMandem4 жыл бұрын
But wouldnt that create more drag and lower its top speed? Since there would be a higher surface area in contact with the water?
@lavachemist4 жыл бұрын
@@MachoMandem my understanding is that when the hull is on plane it rides on top of the water, like a smooth stone skimming across the surface, instead of using buoyancy to float. When the boat is not on plane, the water line is higher on the hull and efficiency is lost to drag since you're pushing through the water instead of riding on top of it.

Each jet drive is has an operating range for RPM. If you exceed the RPM of the jetdrive it will cavitate and the drive will lose thrust. For Brushless motors on LiPo's, generally the formula = No. of cells x voltage per cell x Motor kV rating. In your Yellow NDQ vid it looked like you were using a 2040SL motor. If so it's a 4800kV brushless motor running on 3S LiPo's...So that would give you an approximate RPM of... 3 cells x 3.7V per cell x 4800kV = 53,280 RPM. There's very little chance that jet drive can handle that. in comparison, a KMB 28mm jet drive has an operating RPM range of 15,000-20,000 RPM. Ideally you would pair your motor and battery to match the RPM rating of your jet drive...or just stay well away from wot when operating.

It is a jet boat, in real life these don't suck air, the model would be like stuffing 5,000 hp in a 20' jet boat. So it will cavitate when it bounces and gets gets air. So don't think this boat will be able to run flat out unless it is glass calm, but then again the whole idea of a jet is to be able to run shallow. Some real jet boats even can skip over shallows, snow, logs in the stream.
