Hawks are very territorial they will run off or kill any other bird in there territory that why most big airports went from hiring people to shoot and scare birds away from the airport to bird handlers with hawks that stay and work the airspace at the airport. a hawk will keep its distance from major airplanes but attack anything that flys that bird sized...

I didn't have a camera on my Timber 1.5 (With Floats) this summer late in the evening. Just getting in about 3 batteries worth flying around our cove. About 30 minutes before dark a Great Blue Heron flies into the cove. I've seen him or her for years. A regular in our cove. I was quite surprised to see, as I was flying out of the cove towards the main body of the lake and the heron flying about 50 yards to the right of the cove, make a 180 and start chasing the plane. Great Blue Herons aren't the nimblest of flyers, so any time I made a left turn, or changed altitude I lost him/her. But the heron continued to give chase till I reached my 5 minute alarm and landed. Then it flew over me and the Timber and let out this Jurassic Park/Dinosaur screech all the way down the end of our cove. (He/She was pissed) Very memorable flight. Wished I had a camera!

That's a peregrine falcon. You can tell by the dark and light feather pattern on the legs and belly, and the two bands arounds & below the eyes. Also, it's the world's fastest animal (max speed of 200 mph in a dive). I saw one absolutely wreck a pigeon once here in Seattle, was surprised to see one in the heart of the city.
@ausintune90146 жыл бұрын
"max speed in dive" by that you mean "falling to the ground they can achieve higher speeds then other animals" as humans can only fall at 195 kph due to drag.

I dont know where this guy lives but the bird looks more like a Swainson's Hawk. Considering their range covers the western half the United States, I say it's a match. The main problem is the Peregrine Falcon (my favorite bird) is white and blueish grey, the bird in the video is primarily red. Another thing is, falcon wings are much more pointy than the bird in this video

That is a Swainsons hawk. They're about the same size as red tailed hawk. We have several of them around our house in summer time. They migrate to Argentina for the winter. During nesting season they routinely attack me while I'm working out in the yard. I've seen the same attack scenes up close and personal many times.

Amazing footage indeed. Such a majestic animal. But if this hawk moved in permanently he's gonna become an annoyance when flying. I'd suggest weaponizing your RC plane with a back-facing squirt-gun. He might have enough, of being blasted in the face with water, after a while and just let your plane leave-be. Or it might actually aggro him to the point he'll rip your plane apart. So, yeah...put up with him or deal with him. Either way, don't use anything that could damage this wonderful creature. P.S.: Maybe you wanna strap a dead mouse/rat on the top of the plane for him to pick up and then bugger off to eat it and leave you alone. If you can't beat'em - feed'em! You might wanna build a prop cover for the top section to make sure he doesn't get hurt by doing his dive-bombs.

ark13700 Are you saying that a hawk knows all about human technology, and knows what a toy is? Don't know much about wild-life, and what they will do to protect their territory and young, do you?
@ark147009 жыл бұрын
Mazda rx7 I'm saying is that the toy plane poses minimal threat to its offspring. Yes I do know that the bird would obviously keep seeing it as a threat. The hawk getting tired on the occasions that the guy flies his plane isn't a good thing, but at least it isn't a real bird that would actually kill its younglings.
@GoofieNewfie699 жыл бұрын
If it were a real bird the hawk would have chased it off or killed and ate it.. Kinda hard for a bird to digest plastic. and as stated in the vid, they knew they were aggravating the bird and continued to do so.. They thought aggravating the hawk was so much fun that they mounted a cam on the AC to get closer vids. I guess the way you think , it's ok to go out on ATV's r dirt bike and chase deer or other wild life through the woods

All good and well, and you got some great shots, but honestly, have you considered the impact on the hawk? I'm going to say some hard things, and I would appreciate it if you would think about the things said. While you have had some fun, and it was interesting, the hawk has been compromised in a huge number of ways that I think you seriously need to consider in future: First, the chances that you could fatally hurt him are huge. I know what a prop can do, I still have the stitches (27 of them) and scars on my arm from a botched X8 launch where I stepped in a mole hole while hand launching. The multiple cuts went down to the bone. Luckily, we have hospitals. Hawks don't. I know you said that you were cutting the motor to help prevent harm, but you are not in total control of the situation up there. There were several times when I heard the motor cut well after the hawk had mad his strike. Second, this is a wild animal involved in what it would term a life-or death struggle for territory, and flying the way he is doing, which he doesn't have a choice about, he's expending a huge amount of energy for nothing, which means that if another hawk comes into his territory, it would dominate, simply due to our hawk being seriously tired. The invading hawk would probably kill our hawk. Third, that hawk could very easily have chicks. If the parent is dead or seriously wounded, or just too damn tired to find food, they die too. Fourth, hawks are apex predators, and as such are the control element in a given ecology. Removing that element causes huge ripple effects throughout the rest of the environment in which that hawk is active, which can take years to recover from. Fifth, can you imagine the stress that the hawk went through during all of this? Would you do this to a dog or a cat? Perhaps another wild animal such as a wolf? While I enjoyed the voyeuristic footage of a hawk up close, please don't do this again. It's irresponsible and callous. The future of FPV is in the balance at the moment, and flying like this will only bring down the wrath of people who have the power, money and public sentiment behind them. What this does for the FPV community is no less damaging than the people who insist on flying near airports. In other words, this kind of behaviour will kill the sport for everyone... Please don't do this again. Find another flying field if you have to. I can see that you are an accomplished pilot, but between the points I mentioned above, and the negative sentiment that this could bring down on the FPV community, I think that you need to stop and think what the ramifications could be. Just my 2c worth. Take care, and good flying.

From the "Dinosaur" article on Wikipedia: ...Until the late 20th century, all groups of dinosaurs were believed to be extinct; however, the fossil record indicates that birds are the modern descendants of feathered dinosaurs, having evolved from theropod ancestors during the Jurassic Period,[3] and are now termed "avian dinosaurs". As such, birds were the only dinosaur lineage to survive the mass extinction event. Throughout the remainder of this article, the term "dinosaur" is sometimes used generically to refer to both the avian and non-avian dinosaurs combined, while at other times it is used to refer to the non-avian dinosaurs specifically, and the avian dinosaurs are sometimes simply referred to as "birds"...
