It's actually a NOSE heavy plane flies poorly, a tail heavy plane flies ONCE. Nate in all fairness to this plane and for those of us who are seriously shopping in this market range right now (that's me) could you please revisit this plane after getting the CG correct? Throw a bigger battery up there and make sure she is balanced and just give us a little update at the end of the cheap plane series please. I read good things about this one on RC Groups but really like to know what you think when it's flying right.

The De Havilland Canada (DHC) 2 Beaver is one of the most storied bush planes in existence. So much of Canada and Alaska have been opened up by that aircraft since it's inception, and it is still a workhorse of today's Bush. It is one of the best "Low and Slow" STOL aircraft out there, getting into place where most other planes wouldn't dare. It's nice to see a well done representation of the DHC-2 Beaver at such a good price, too!

Love this plane. I've had one for a while now. It and the A430 are fantastic. Works great with a JumperTx or similar with multiprotocol module. (Deviation or OpenTx). A small AIO camera can plug into the available plug too. Even in a decent wind this flies great in stability mode.

I bought this a couple years ago when Banggood had a special price from a US warehouse for $79. It's so easy to fly and plenty of power for a tiny trainer. I can take off, fly and land in my cul-de-sac.

I have that plane for 3years now and have replaced ALL the foam after many crashes. The only original parts are the electronics and motor! Untill now, I never thought of it as being tail heavy. I will look into that next flight. Thanks for the insight. By the way, you're a lucky guy to have a woman that plays with the same "toys" as you.

I got this airplane on Christmas. It's my very first rc airplane. I now have about 20 flights with it now. I found the hinges were way too stiff! I had to disconnect the pushrod and manually break in all the control surfaces. This made all the difference in flying. Also clicking the left stick changes the rates from low to high. Once you do this it will roll pretty fast! Also make sure that the plane was actually level when you calibrated the gyro (tail off the ground) Thanks again

Bingo! 😎👍 I had to chuckle when Nate got it backward and stumbled as his brain had a “wait, what?” moment. No worries, Nate. Even full-scale pilots acknowledge that 80% of one’s brain capacity seems to disappear as soon as the propeller starts spinning...

This is my go-to plane for quick flights from my driveway. I live at the end of a cul-de-sac at the end of a 100 yard street and this is perfect for flying with those bounds. It's powerful enough to handle the wind that brushed planes in this size can't.

I found when setting the gyro make sure the plane (fuselage) is level, not sitting on ground on the tail wheel, and you won't have a tail heavy flight. Plane will be balanced. FYI... this is my first trainer and I'm having a blast. I agree the wheels are small for grass takeoff and landing. Love the stabilization with the option to go into 3D mode.

Have you considered a Jumper transmitter? Multiprotocal including futaba s-fhss and if you aren't afraid of opentx theres the jumper t12 and jumper t16's. If you prefer a simpler interface then theres the jumper t8 with deviation software which is WAY easier and both setups have very simple to use multiprotocal setup that are very well documented.. could breath new life into this model and the last xk model without costing a ton of cash for a low end futaba.. Just a suggestion.. Thanks for the share and the budget plane week.. Totally rocks!

I love what you guys are doing with these economical planes and introducing these and reviewing them, in my opinion, should continue. How about changing things up a bit and do a giant scale foamie? At least, once? I know Nate is perfectly capable of flying one as they are usually more stable. Safe technology is available on most of the EFlite planes and they are so awesome! Just a suggestion as I would like to see the biggies too.

Not sure how long you have been flying and not to be too critical but unlike me there are a lot of beginners out here. Using the terms tail heavy and nose heavy refer to the plane as it sits static on the ground. I would rather have a slightly nose heavy plane any day. That goes for full scale also. If you are referring to flying then it is either trimmed nose low or nose high. You should always do a balance check prior to flight. Its very easy by measuring 1/3 back from the leading edge near the fuselage and checking the balance. I do love your videos and the De Havilland Beaver is a very nice flying plane. I have the 60 inch Lady Esther and of all my planes including my Fun Cub and my SIG Cadet Senior the Beaver flies smoother and easier. I am not trying to be judgemental just wanted to add some good comments. Keep up the good reviews and keep landing on the tires not on the windshield.

@paulcucit2786
@paulcucit2786 4 жыл бұрын
The Beaver is a much older design and has a radial engine, hence the large cylindrical nose cowling. The Carbon Cub has an inline engine, like almost all modern planes, giving it a more streamlined look with a smaller nose cowling. Another major difference in the R/C versions that the RCSaylors have tested is the size... the Carbon Cub is over twice the size of this DHC-2. And of course the transmitter included with the RTF version of the Cub is MUCH better than this toyish one.

How does this compare to the hobby zone sport cub s2?

I actually bought this plane and find it more difficult/wonky to fly than the s2. But it's faster/more acrobatic. It's also quite often 5-12mph winds where I live *shrug*. Still getting used to it!

Also (sadly) it's a bit more brittle than the s2. I've managed to damage it just transporting it. a bit disappointing... a delicate orange beaver :D

but the flight time is pretty good! 15 minutes vs 7

So the s2 is a better beginner plane

The sport cub s2 is so slow and docile, there's not much comparison. Easy to crash this one; the s2 is way more likely to still be in one piece after a few flights.

The saying if quoted properly is wrong. A bit nose heavy is far more forgiving than is a bit tail heavy. Tail heavy tends to be squirrely and out of control while nose heavy tends to be sluggish. Go extreme either way and it's not flyable either way.

Angle of incidence is too low for the air foil at that Reynolds number. Adding nose weight will just make it take more elevator to get to that angle of attack (or even more since more weight means higher wing loading), which is needed to maintain altitude. Another factor is that if you initialize the stabilization in the 3 point attitude then it may be fighting you to keep it in the initialization attitude. Try initializing with the tail up in a more normal attitude. But beware that if that works, it's going to fly faster, and you may have to land it out of flight stabilization mode in order achieve an appropriate landing attitude. Not that you guys do the conventional 12 inch to the foot scale type landings any way (stabilized approach, hold it just off the runway, reduce power, eventually reduced speed causing it to sink onto ground, on the edge of stall -- go watch some Trent Palmer landings).

Just realized I have this plane still in the box, just like the 70mm edf F16 I have! Time for less buying and more flying!
