**PART II: MAIDEN FLIGHT - bit.ly/2R2ccPE
This is my second plane in my "Teach Yourself to Fly" series. The Mini Apprentice S from Horizon Hobby is a great step up in size from my Sport Cub S and will handle the wind a lot better. It's a great choice for a beginner rc pilot. It has the SAFE features, including the 3 flight modes (beginner, intermediate, experienced), Panic Recovery, and AS3X stabilization. I think it would also be great as your first RC plane! Stay tuned for part 2 - the maiden flight.
Part II - Mini Apprentice S maiden flight: • MINI APPRENTICE S | ...

I found your channel and was really impressed about the great contents for a beginner. I also love the entertaining and informative way you make the videos. I got so excited about the RC planes that I ordered the Mini Apprentice S RTF, too. I have 30+ years experience with RC cars but I now want to expand to a new level with the RC hobby. Keep up the awesome work!

Hi Hayley, super nice review, we use this plane as our club trainer down here in Florida, probably have taught at least 50 people of all ages to fly using this aircraft, the look on their faces after they have taken off, fly a square pattern around the field, and then landed all on their own is PRICELESS, another cool aircraft to review is the Horizon Conscendo Advance 1.5 glider, has all the SAFE features as the Mini Apprentice, uses the same battery pack, very easy glider to fly, and it finds thermals very easy, had mine up for over an hour last week, kept handing the transmitters to all my fellow pilots, anybody looking to get into rc gliders, this is a good one, it only comes in plug & play, well need to supply a transmitter, and a chair to sit in........

That's awesome!! I actually picked up the Timber before I got the mini apprentice. I was scared to fly it for a while since it is quite a bit bigger, has flaps, and it only has the SAFE select (so fewer beginner features), but the first time I landed it on my own was the most amazing feeling! I'll have to check out the Conscendo you mentioned next

Great review and assembly video! We are looking forward to you flying the new plane! You're going to love this little airplane for learning.My Dad and new RC flyers have the Apprentice 5E and they enjoy flying it.This series of ready to fly planes have gotten out of practice flyers and new flyers into the air pretty quickly.Among the many safety features you pointed out ,the wider outer portions of the wing are a great thing to have.These are leading edge cuffs which is a NASA design from the 1970's.The cuffs place the outer wing leading edge at a lower angle of attack.If you have the nose of the plane pointed up steeply,for example,the plane will not stall and spin as easily.Good to see another RC enthusiast introduced to flying.Blue skies!

Only time you should quick charge is at the field. As you mentioned, it's very hard on the batteries to charge past 1c. If you want to do it right, get a couple DC balance chargers you can use at the field and enough batteries to keep you going. Waiting an extra 20 minutes to not damage your expensive lipos is well worth it! I have 4 chargers running and a bucket of batteries, I could fly until my fingers bled and never damage a lipo.

My fist plane was a Super Cub. The first thing I learned was how to use 5 minute Epoxy on broken foam! The second thing was how to use a cheap walmart RC boat to get a plane out of the water. Third was how long it takes to drive to safe place to fly. Forth thing was why you should not to climb out on thin branches of a tree. Fifth was there are other uses for a bamboo fishing pole. Sixth was there are other ways to use 2 bamboo fishing poles and duct tape. Seventh was where the closest hobby store that carried parts for a Super Cub was located. I could go on and on and on.

I keep on thinking about getting into fixed wing vehicles but I just love flying my quads in FPV too much. Whatever time I get to fly I always want to either practice racing through gates or freestyling. I do chase fixed wings and love doing that. Fortunately I fly with guys that don't mind me chasing their really nice prop and jet driven planes on Sundays. It is super fun chasing them and seeing the video edit my friend (DiscoverRC KZbin channel) creates from the mayhem of that day. Keep up the great work. I was mostly a truggy, buggy and monster truck RC guy until the flying bug hit me big time just like you.

Kim, check your info. P-factor has nothing to do with the cowling. When the nose of the airplane goes up as in a climb, the descending prop blade, on the right has a greater angle of attack than the ascending blade, on the left. This gives the airplane more thrust on the right and produces a left turning effect. Also, spiraling slipstream, which is caused by the circular motion of the prop wash, hits the left side of the vertical stabilizer also causing a left turning tendency. In addition, gyroscopic precession causes a left turning tendency as well. If you use a clockwise rotating prop, everything would work to turn the airplane to the right. The cowling has virtually no effect. BTW, I fly RC but am also a full scale fixed wing and rotary Gold Seal flight instructor. Cessna has a great book that goes over all of this in detail.

She’s hooked on flying! Hi Hayley. My father was really interested in planes. He never finished his plane before he died. I built a huge winged glider from scratch and covered it only to crash it on first flight. Balsa is too soft. It did not survive. At that point I gave up on planes. I guess these already made planes with the stabilization software might make things less risky. I just cant afford to run planes and cars both. Enjoy.

Good review choice. 48 inch wingspan for beginner is as small as any newbie should go if you ask me. The smaller the plane, the harder it may be for beginners due to less stability at lower speeds which can require much faster reflexes to compensate for. This plane in particular coupled with stability control is a very excellent first or second choice. I need slight overkill so this is not the plane for me, but I have nothing bad to say about it for what it is. Cheers :)

Great video. Ask/suggest to Horizon they send you a Timber with floats for your next plane. This has flaps and is a STOL plane so you can try on water and maybe grass take offs. By the way....ignore the 14 thumbs down as are probably from jealous girlfriends as I see nothing wrong with the video that warrants a negative response. Apart from a few details that relate to more experienced flyers, but this is for beginners not veterans. Keep up the great work and look forward to more videos.

Another thing I like about a tricycle type landing gear, over a tail-dragger, is that upon take-off, some tail-draggers will tip forward when you give them throttle. A tricycle type landing gear eliminates that.

Nicely done, young lady. This is the kind of video that those new to R/C flight need to watch. Keep up the good work. Don't know what your situation is vis-a-vis battery chargers, but you need a balance charger for safely handling your LiPos. I've been using the Hitec x1 mini for about a year. It's not expensive and does a good job. (I'm retired and have nothing to do with their company.) Maybe you've already got a fancy charger and if so, just forget what I wrote. I haven't seen the second part yet but I don't think you can completely "Teach yourself to fly". We always do it with an instructor pilot who is on a second "Buddy Box" controller with the student. You don't have time to learn all the correct control inputs to take-off, fly and land on your very first flight. It takes time and practice to make all that automatic. I've even heard of real airline pilots trying to fly RC and crashing on their first flight. The biggest challenge is because of how the aileron control inputs reverse when the plane turns around and comes back towards you. You'd have to handle that correctly the very first time. No second chances. I have also seen some computerized RC flight trainers that are pretty good. I'd at least try one of those first before trying to fly a real model. Crashing on your first flight can be very discouraging and people have given up and walked away because of it. Learning to fly the proper way is safer and it can successfully get you into RC flying.

My dad and I built an RC plane from one of those balsa wood kits many years ago. Sadly it was 90 percent completed and never finished. That Mini Apprentice looks cool. What got me really interested was the floats, never even thought of that concept. Over water there's much less obstacles and taking off and landing on water seems so fun. How do you feel about gas engines?
@RCGirl
@RCGirl 6 жыл бұрын
Gas engines seem to be a dying art in RC (thought I know I'll get comments that say otherwise!!). Electric is a lot less maintenence, more efficient, less messy, less noise.. but I know there are still some die hards that love the gassers, so it's up to user preference.

Hi RC Girl. Really enjoying your channel. The detail you go into is excellent. I'm a returning pilot to the hobby. I flew glo engine planes. Started in a plane just like that, went onto a low wing trainer also tricycle undercarriage which was a seriously fun plane. I then went onto sport tail draggers. Sadly due to immigrating to another country I've been out of flying for some 17 years now. Completely amazed at where the hobby has gone in electric. I am completely sold by Eflite and their stabilisation and safe select technology. What would you suggest as my first plane to get back into. I flew for 5 years very regularly back in the day. Would the T-28 Trojan be a good refresher. I also had my eye on the P51 1.2m. Of all the reviews I've seen looks an easier plane to fly than the bigger 1.5m which is where I want to go. I love Warbirds. I'd appreciate your advice and take care.

It you've never flown planes before at all, start on a sim. Then if you DONT have a buddy to help/buddy box, the sport cub s is the way to go (tiny but mighty, trust me it will be way easier to repair than an apprentice or carbon cub). You can probably then quickly graduate to a mini apprentice or apprentice. The mini will be better for park flying and is what most of the clubs use for trainers. I had issues as a beginner with the carbon cub s+, but it definitely looks cool. Hope that helps

In a way, I wish you were so I could see how you manage when the plane is coming back towards you but no matter. When you do fly it could you jam the aileron all the way to the left or right so I could see the maximum bank angle in beginner mode? Thanks! I'm guessing the Mini version does not have the geo fencing and self landing?

My full sized Apprentice lost connection with the transmitter and flew into a huge Maple Tree. Sadly it didnt fare well. I have had it for 4 years so it has been through a lot including flying on water. I have decided to retire my full sized Apprentice and scrap it. The thing was badly beat up getting it down from the tree. The Apprentice has always been a wonderful plane for me. My Entire engine mount came off because the epoxy failed. I was able to use marine epoxy to fix it. Sadvthat it only flys 5 minutes. I easily got 15 minutes flight on mine. I highly recommend this plane to anyone getting into the hobby. Scrap the car charger and get a converter and a regular charger. I will miss my full sized apprentice.

I dont know if this one or the corbon cub s is better, i think that the mini apprentice s better is because the wheels are more stable on ground. I can totaly go for a self build plane, i think it is super fun, but i dont know what battery, motor, and transmitter to buy. Maby someone can help.

Danny Helton I did a short test flight last weekend. Had to join my local RC flight club since my regular spot is out of commission. I had someone trim it out for me first then took controls in the air. It's really stable in beginner mode but doesn't give you a ton of stick control. It also has a ton of mixing programmed in for you which is nice. I'm hoping to film the second part this weekend and do my first landing👍

The don't yaw left because of motor torque. They yaw left because of P - FACTOR. The top of the engine cowling is smaller than the bottom. Thus causing the top blade to grab more air than the bottom blade. Causing the aircraft to yaw to the left. It only occurs during full power climbs. That is why when you take off in a single engine airplane. You add right pedal (rudder) to keep it straight during climb out. Same on your scaled down R/C airplane. Engine torque would cause your single engine airplane to roll, not yaw. Flight School 101. Other than that I really enjoyed your video young lady. I've been a private pilot for over 25 years and an A&P (aircraft mechanic) for 30 years. You just helped my find my 1st R/C airplane.

The engine cowling has nothing to do with p-factor as p-factor relates to the blade angle relative to gravity. At low speeds, with a nose up attitude, the right (or downward side) has a higher angle of attack than the left (rising side) cause asymmetrical disc loading which pulls the airplane toward the left. Because an angle of attack is needed, p-factor is most noticed at takeoff (lower speeds) when pitch rotation is initialized. On the ground, the left tendency is caused by the slipstream. The propeller generates a rotating mass of air that moves over the airplane contacting the left side of of the rudder, therefore pushing the airplane to the left. As airspeed is met, more atmospheric air is able to move over the rudder countering this effect. These two combined is why right rudder is needed on runway for takeoff and pitch change for initial flight. However, you are correct that torque would cause the aircraft to roll. This is why at takeoff many RC planes have a tendency to drop a wing for full throttle takeoffs.

@@mtnmyke First of all. I was attempting to give the young lady the simplest answer as not to overwhelm her. But, there's always someone who thinks they know it all and wants to show there butt. Let's get technical now. Your wrong. Any FAA examiner would fail your explanation and here's why. It's not Asymmetrical disc loading. It's Asymmetrical Thrust or Disc Loading. They are the same thing. It has nothing to do with the angle of attack of the blades. Thier angle of attack remains constant. Thier blade angles never change in relation to each other. Even with a constant speed prop. The blade angles change evenly. A fixed wing airplane does not have blade angle of attack changes like a rotary wing airplane. Where the advancing and retreating blades have different angles of attack. P-factor is because of the angle of attack of the airplanes wings. At a higher angle of attack, air passes through the top blade faster than the bottom blade. Or the technical answer is the 1 to 6 o'clock position blade has a higher airflow than the 7 to 12 o'clock blade. Simply put, the top blade grabs more air than the bottom blade. It has nothing to do with the right blade having a different angle of attack than the left. Angle of attack on a propeller is also called pitch. You are telling us that one blades pitch differs from the other blade? On a fixed wing? Give me a brake! You give a lot of technical mumbo jumbo making yourself to sound like you know what your talking about. But your answer is not only false. It is misleading. Before you publicly dispute me again. Know your stuff. Go, look it up. Educate yourself. And the shape of the cowling can increase the p-factor. You are right in one thing, though. You agree that engine torque will roll the airplane.

@Kim Dossett When you say 'there' I think you meant "their", also you used the word/s 'your wrong' when you meant to use "You're wrong", I have overlooked the other spelling errors and punctuation. hth.

@@silentjellybean My fault for speed typing on a self correcting cell phone. It incorrectly corrects sometimes. I also didn't proof read as I usually do. I do believe that people understand the point I was attempting to convey. Even with the errors in grammar. There was no errors in the context. Have a good day.

sorry for the silly question - i am trying to get a new hobby like this - you said 5 minutes only flight it can be ???
@RCGirl
@RCGirl 4 жыл бұрын
Do you mean the flight time? Depends on the battery but this usually lasts a long time 20-30 minutes plus. Also depends on how you fly. If you fly at full throttle a lot, it will run through the battery more quickly

@@RCGirl Correct - Yes I meant the flight time - in the video you mention at 4:42 - flight time is just 5 minutes - but that could be with 1 battery. Not sure if we need to concatenate the batteries or perhaps i did not understand correctly. No matter what Thanks a lot for replying me back - you inspire me a lot showing those RC products - i am trying to get this hobby for myself but i think that will be a good idea for my nephews as well. added that you are very cute ! :)

can you use larger batteries for longer flight?
@RCGirl
@RCGirl 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah i think you can go slightly larger but bigger batteries weight more which requires more power so there is a sweet spot with battery size to flight time.

Its not all about the rush as that gets old quick. There ARE many more things that give you 10x more of that adrenaline boost.The beauty of flying is when you reach that point when the plane is an extension of you (almost as if one is inside the plane), its a "zone", zen state, cant explain, but when it does happen it sure is wonderful state of being. To get a good rush, jump in a boosted V8 @ 10 psi, or ride wot a two stroke dirt bike, that sure will get your hair rising, and the heart rate through the sky.

Oh wow you triggered me when you mentioned PG&E. You should pay big attention to what they have been up to lately and what their agenda is. You should take a closer look at that location you mention and take note for your future reference. I could go on for hours about them but hopefully you can figure out what I might be hinting at. Great woahs ahead and not the cool kind.

I'm an advanced pilot and have flown this plane and it is a great beginner airplane, but you still need an instructor to help talk you through the flight experience and give advice and guidance and to make sure the new pilot hasn't been flipping switches and forgot they did like I had a few months ago,,,,,the plane did not survive.
@RCGirl
@RCGirl 6 жыл бұрын
mreid08 yep agree with that if someone is brand new to flying. I recently took off with my Timber in experienced mode on accident and the elevator was trimmed the wrong way and it shot straight up and then almost nose dived. Luckily I knew to throttle up a bit to level it out, but always good to have the guidance of a more experienced pilot when you are learning.
