Check out my beginner's guide to RC helicopter flight with the Blade 120s from Horizon Hobby. Helis have always been a curiosity of mine, but such a challenge to fly! The 120s is an upgrade from the original 120sr - it now incorporates the SAFE technology with 3 flight modes, stabilization, and a PANIC recovery button!
Full disclosure: I'm a brand ambassador for Horizon Hobby and try out various products they send me but I'm not a paid sponsor. Views are my own!

I started my self with a Blade 120 and I was hooked. And today 7 years later I'm still flying RC Helicopter's and I think that's the best you can do in the RC world. Nice vid's and keep em coming. 👍🏻

I was flying a Blade 200SRX and it got taken away in the wind..never found it! When I first started flying heli's I found it helpful to fly patterns around the field just like flying an airplane. I've gotten better and now have three, the biggest being a T Rex 500X. Love the sound the most! I have two daughters and we watch your videos together, thank you for posting!!

Good morning - just found your channel. Good call on the 120 for a first heli! Another nice thing about it is that you can crash it 100 times and do little or no damage to it and if you do break the skids or links, they are inexpensive to replace versus a more expensive Align or other model. Would also suggest that once someone gets the hang of some simple flight patterns, they should definitely go much bigger. Believe it or not, the larger hell's (500 /550 etc) are easier to fly than the little ones, they are not as susceptible to the wind (they weigh more and have more power) and the bigger ones also come with some good stabilization built in nowadays. Thanks for the vid - enjoyed it!! Cheers!

I learned collective pitch helis to start out with because I didn't know any better and didn't know anyone in RC but always fascinated with helis. But the good thing was that switching to fixed wing planes was easy peasy afterwords. The thing about these fixed pitch helis is they don't like wind at all. Good luck to you as you advance. It's VERY rewarding!

I've tried helis occasionally since the early 1980's. Collective pitch helis are easier to fly than fixed pitch. Spinning the rotor up to speed before adding pitch gives the heli some gyroscopic stability from the rotor. I'd skip the 4 channel version and get the CCPM/Flybarless when it comes out. The big advance here is the "6 axis" gyro.

4 channel is great for learning your orientations, but definitely go to CP when comfortable. You'll never look back. Man. The 80s. NO GYRO unless you had a mechanical one!!! You got moxi there. I tried it and it was hard as hell. Anytime you change pitch or head speed you have to be on the tail to compensate. It's a real bi^&#! LOL Kudos to you on that!

With all that production in this video, I thought it was going to be a Blade sponsored video, but it looks like you just really like RC. You're going to get a million different opinions on what to buy, how to progress, etc. Bottom line, passion and interest in Heli flying will get you farther than most advice. I started with a 120SR; of course looking back on it, I can say I should have bought X, Y, or Z. It taught me how to hover, and that's about it. BUT, what it did do is introduce me to the world of RC helis, once you start figuring things out and experimenting with different models, it will all come together. Also, it looks like you have a very experienced 3d pilot at your field and I'm sure he'll be more than happy to give you great advice. Passion and determination is the important part.

Recently got back into this hobby and I've just bought one of these as a step up from my old coaxial Blade MCX. My aim is to eventually have a 450 (T Rex) scale Jetranger, so gentle flight with a fixed pitch Heli like the 120S is a good start point. I have no interest in inverted or 3D flight, just eventual scale.

Me and coworker a few years ago had those mini handsize helicopters, he had his own office, and I sat in a cube outside of his office, we had almost nobody in our quad, and every afternoon before end of day one of us would hover into the other's area and then the other would grab his chopper and next thing you knew we were both flying over the cube walls and we'd test land inside a cube onto a monitor stand as a chopper pad, you'd be amazed how good you get at helicopter flying with a small $60 helicopter. It's really the muscle memory or stick memory that makes you good.

I started heli’s in late 90’s with a robbe shlueter moskito, had a .46 nitro motor and a 4-channel plane radio with pitch and throttle mixed mechanically, it only had a gyro on tail rotor and this was when a gyro was literally a flywheel spinning and sensors feeling the yaw. It actually flew amazingly, but I did eventually upgrade to a 6 channel so I could fly 3-D. Was definitely a little more challenging flying on 72 MHz with mechanical mixing and gyro. Keep practicing, inside is good with small helis like that, I had the collective pitch version of your heli and it flew really good, wasn’t too bad at 3-D, definitely wasn’t a 700, but was really good

Very cool to see you're getting into RC flight! I started out in RC with planes and helis, just recently getting into some surface stuff. The low margin of error with RC flight gives a great adrenaline rush and is a VERY addictive and rewarding hobby! Remember - takeoffs are optional, landings are mandatory haha :) I wish you the best of luck with your flights and look forward to watching you progress as a pilot! (I have a few videos on my channel of me practising autorotations for the first time IRL with a few of my helis, if you want to check them out)

Nice job! Your outtake video of the heli flying into you was more like my experience with that particular model, but I see you're already able to fly it pretty well. My problem was always determining the stick direction in relation the the facing of the heli; you seem to have that down. Somebody further down was saying after you learn CP go big; that was my experience as well. 360CFX was the biggest, but I had a lot of fun with the 180CFX and the 300CFX. Good video!

I know they say not to start with collective pitch helis but you have so much more control with them. I went through all the sims and fixed pitch learning. In the end I got a trex 150x (not the model before it, trex 150) With a sim and this heli, that's when I started to really pick it up. Fights the wind really good has all the safe mode. I went leaps and bounds. Decided all my co axial and fixed pitch were a waist of money. Maybe its different for everyone but that's what did it for me. Keep up the good looks and the great vids.

You started with CP? That's commitment. Good for you. I kind of did the same. RC heli is dying hobby and I've observed there are 2 types of "potential" pilots. Those who sim. Those who don't. With an airplane you don't need that, but with a real CP there is absolutely no way.
@gavinpowell8538

Sims are a great tool and I would recommend a sim to any noob, (we've all been noobs) but there is nothing like the feel of the real thing. As long as you have patience, time and passion.

Having had the Honeybee FP and the Honeybee CP2 (difference being fixed pitch vs CCPM) I can definitively say: Collective pitch helis are easier to fly if the pitch to throttle + power to tail-rotor curves are adjusted correctly. In fact... I still have both of those helis, but in need of some minor parts that are no longer available. (discontinued years ago) There's not really much reason to go fixed pitch especially with the modern "6 axis" gyro, which will deal with the power to tailrotor curve not being quite right. The modern gyro can lock the heli's heading even with no "revo" mixing applied by computer transmitter or mutifunction board in the heli. The power to cyclic "curve" can be left at the simplest straight line (hover upright mode) or "V" for basic aerobatics and it will be fine until you are able to understand how to adjust the curves. A FP heli essentially can not do autorotation. a collective pitch heli can. Just that difference is a good enough reason to skip fixed pitch.

Practice hover nose forward , nose left, nose right, nose back. Fly squares, figure 8. Use high rate to fight wind , this provides more pitch yaw and roll. In mode 1 if you let up on right stick will it self correct. When you upgrade to a 230 stand back farther. 230 eflight great machine.

I don't know... ive seen a lot more females in the hobby now than ever... i have been flying and completely into RC since the early 90s when i was still a kid. when i was still dating my now wife.. she would always ask me to help her pick out a plane for her at the hobby shop..i made the mistake of telling her i will teach her to fly one of mine first... well i had one of the original reactor bipes that was purple and blue that was an absolute handful to fly... she thought she would take it out when i was at work and teach herself to fly because she thought it was "pretty" ..when i got home from work she was at the dinner table crying trying to piece it back together with Popsicle sticks and cardboard tampon applicator tubes..(can't make this shit up) it was then that i bought her a plane of her own after i just laughed for a minute and then kissed her on the forehead because it was so cute to look at her frantically trying to fix it before i got home..

I have the 120s. Super easy to fly out of the box. UMX cub is a great first plane. I also have both the UMX Timber and the big Timber. I would recommend all three as great beginner planes but I think the Timbers flaps make it even better because of it’s STOL capability.
@RCGirl
@RCGirl 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah i think the UMX timber might have been a better next plane coming from the tiny sport cub s since the umx timber still has the 3 flight modes and panic recovery. But i've gotten more comfortable with the larger timber and it's still very trainer friendly. I'm working with Horizon to do a progression series - mini Apprentice (SAFE) then the Champ (with S+), so stay tuned!

Charming :) If you don't mind simulators and have finally caught the helicopter bug, why not try full-sized helicopter simulators? Probably the best one out there is the UH-1H module for DCS. You'll need a joystick (preferably a HOTAS with pedals) for that, but in my opinion it's so much worth the trouble.

simming is a must to advance into 3d. realflight and AccuRC are excellent. no one could afford the cost or time to rebuild learning with larger heli's. anything larger than a 120 even with throttle hold with be damaged coming down. quick tip.. flying thumbs with a little help from index finger on stick can really smooth out movements and help with micro inputs. also, try setting the stick lengths on tx to your preference, i prefer mine short (they're adjustable) nice video, look forward to seeing your 1st successful collective pitch flight :-)

One tip for helicopters like this that have brushed motors. Don't fly back to back flights unless you feel of the motors and make sure they are not very hot. Heat is the worst enemy of these types of motors. If you let them cool just a short time between flights, they will last a lot longer. One other thing, stabilized models like this don't like spinning on the ground and easing up. They will do better with a deliberate "pop" off the ground and out of propwash. Doesn't mean you have to launch it like a rocket, but just more of a deliberate move until its a few feet off the ground. It will avoid a lot of tipovers.

Great video, showing panic button in action would have been helpful though. I have the original 120 and it was absolutely impossible for a beginner lol.

Great little heli, once you can hover tail in its good practice to fly a box pattern, Then of course nose in! Good luck!

I fly both fixed wing and helis. Simming is good practice. But with something like this it's tail in first because all the controls are the same direction. Do your takeoff and stabilize. Maintain throttle is key. Then do a cross. Forward then back to center. Backwards then center. Side to center. Then around the perimeter of the box all while maintaining control. After you've mastered that the nose in is just like flying an airplane. If the wing or rotor disk drops, lift that side with the control. Nose in and the heli comes toward you pull back. Nose in and it's going away push forward. You'll see this as you do it. So I do tail in, then nose in because it's looks like a plane coming towards you and you know how to react to that. Side in after that and continue to work on your box and maintain a steady altitude. Throttle management is key until you get to a CP heli. Next... the 230S V2 CP. Normal mode is like a fixed pitch mode and it's in a basic stability mode. Hope this helps and please don't be afraid to ask for help. We would love to see you doing tic toks one day. 😋😁💖

Hey rc girl,you asked me to let you know how it went with my sport cub ,and I totally agree with you.the flight hobby is very addictive.ive only had my sport cub for two weeks and already upgraded to the Carbon cub,I'm not ready for heli's yet.tried them in the past and no luck.great video though

RC Girl believe it or not,I found it easier to fly than the sport cub due to the sport cub is light and found it harder to steer if it went to high.the Carbon cub with its auto land feature really helped out a lot with judging the runway from along distance away,especially for a newbie like myself.i would recommend the Carbon cub for even a first timer,however the price tag is a little high.so if you crash it .the sport cub is a great plane never the less.
