I purchased this OSD, and found that it gave my position at 32Km's away - terrible if I was to rely on it to recover a lost model. After re-flashing, the error is now 4 meters, with the added feature of the "Home arrow". I can also alter the coding of the software so that the different parameters displayed can be moved around until I'm happy with the display. This unit is great for the price, although the GPS refresh rate is very slow. I love your work Bruce...hope you're back in the air soon.

Hi Bruce, there's the CL-OSD firmware that you can now flash on to this OSD. It then includes some extra information such as an arrow for home etc on it. It may make a good part of your upcoming review.
@OutbackKanga11 жыл бұрын
Bruce after some extensive testing of many flash files in this osd I have found that most of the cl-osd files dont work well on the mini OSD. They work well on the larger osd,s but the mini osd has smaller memory capacity and constantly crashes within ten mins if the latest gosd cl-osd is used .. However there is one file that works well made by a chap called Johern . His version is an older simpler flash based on r88 , The mini osd works extremley well with it. he is on rc groups .

Both thumbs up, great to see you back on the channel Bruce... looking forward to your review on that one, got one ages ago, same product - but never got further into FPV back then, problems arrived as they tend to do. Due to the harassment of the MFNZ and how they disrespected you is one big reason I subscribed to your channel. Your information is very helpful, the method of how you explain things that make it soak in even to a non flyer who wants to know as much as possible before spending a penny getting into the sport. Thank you for your dedication and helpful videos.

Finally got to hooking this OSD system up, was a bit of a trick to figure it out at first but then when I learned about BECs to power the 5V GPS module and then how to work with the main board, it was a easier. My only question is what should I calibrate the RSSI to on this unit? The instructions are very minimal...took a while to figure out how to set the time zone! lol

I have this and a security cam 2000 camera how in the hell do you wire this thing? do you have to hook 2 sets of wires for video? 1 for tx 1 for cam? I need help davidringler40@yahoo.com
@SonicOrbStudios10 жыл бұрын
david ringler Most cameras will have 3 output wires, a black ground, red power input, and yellow or white video output. Run your black ground to the ground side of this OSD out, and the video line of this to the video pin on the OSD, also feed those to the transmitter video and ground connectors. To power the camera, a 5 or 12V DV BEC is most common....but if it's a 5V camera, you could tap power off the 5v rails on the receiver for the radio control system, the leads have a double servo cable just for this reason.
@CraigBurden111 жыл бұрын
For everyone who says it cannot take a 4s battery. I have used mine with two 3300mAh 4s Nano-Techs in parallel. So yes it can! I am not sure if the original firmware will work as the voltage might not display correctly. But on CL-OSD it works and has been confirmed to have the correct voltage even with the motor running.
@SonicOrbStudios10 жыл бұрын
Final thoughts on this unit, it's cheap and ok...black wires go towards the side with the black label, but anyways on to how this works! It does work, but takes a while to lock onto any signal. The GPS is heavy on top of that. The most annoying part is that the refresh rate on the data is very slow....like unusable. I suggest an EZosd from ImmersionRC or something similar, far worth the extra cost.

I have also put it in the files section in the mini osd on hobby king. The speed seems to be in miles but the rest is metric . Its for pal cameras, All seems acurate against our cars speedo . I have used it for over an hour at a time and so sign of any glitching or system crashing. The gps readout itself is wildy inacurate" mine is 2klms out but the home arrow is spot on, Cheers Bruce and Happy flying Mate :)

Hey Bruce. Love the reviews! Keep them coming. One question though. How do you hook up the RSSI lead to the receiver?
@AltitudeAerials11 жыл бұрын
Awesome timing Bruce as I've just ordered this from hobbyking. There's a cl osd thread over on rcg and they say that the coordinates, speed etc out of the box are way inaccurate so the unit would definitely need to be flashed with cl osd. You might want to do a 2 part review one with the stock firmware and the next one with cl osd. Hope you get back in the air soon!

Those OSD's can be re-flashed with opensoruce firmware (cl-osd) which provides more functions and a better display. (It does require a little soldering and PC/linux knowledge though). The only bad thing with that OSD system is the GPS antenna. It's extremely prone to interference and often refuses to lock if its mounted near any other electronics. You really have to mounted it on a wing 30+cm from other stuff.

I don't suppose it has a 'return to home' feature? Didn't see it in the list. I am flying a Bixler2 and added an FPV system (FatShark) to it. I was surprised how hard it is to get one's bearings just flying with the goggles. I need to find a simple 'return to home' feature for ease of mind :)

Hi bruce. I'm french, so sorry for my english. I try this OSD. The position send by the GPS is good (+- 20meters). for the control of the voltage is good too (out of box, no need calibration). the speed is good. For the altitude is AMSL (above mean sea level) and not AGL (above ground level). no possibility to put this at 0 on ground. i can't try the RSSI with the Eurgle receiver. So for 22$ it's a good osd. Thank you for all your review. tell me how i can donate.

Bruce: I always love your reviews...even the tongue in cheek comments! But I'm getting older and grayer waiting for your promised followup guide to assembly of this cheap little OSD. I am concerned that the solder pads with no holes (for firmware loading) are very fragile, and I would love to see how you deal with this issue. Pins towards the closer side of the label are the black grounds. Lower pins towards the button and adjustments are the video in/out and (+) voltage for the two batteries. The GPS needs 5vDC so get a Turnigy BEC or something to power that on it's own. I've got another one of these coming in soon, will have to do a video on how to wire it all..

Indeed, you do a great job and looks like alot of people grabbed the same unit. I'm guessing you cant film yourself flying; but when you can do the review, see if just the antenna part can be used straight to flight controller - skipping the osd bit. Naze32 or CC3D, or whatever. I gather it wont work, but I'd like to know why so I buy a more compatible gps unit in the future. Considering replacing the osd part with Minimosd and curious if the antenna would work with that instead? Why don't I just plug mine in to a flight controller and see? Because I think i've reached dangerous levels of knowledge and experience ~ 6 mos. I've had enough. But thought you might give it go. Thanks again for your efforts. Learn alot regularly from its fruit.

It's cheap and old gear. The GPS unit is more than outdated... super slow fix and easy to loose lock, slow baud rate == slow updates. Also be careful more than one unit had the cables inside poorly soldered and touching each other. So you might end up having to open it to fix that. TIP: Remove black cover and put clear shrink tube so you can see the 3D fix led working.
