I'm quite known for smoothness in brushless too :) I've had smooth starting brushless motors since 2006, but there was a gap after Quark shut down where controllers didn't quite cut it until about 2 years ago. It doesn't quite match my higher end brushed, but any of my brushless motors combined with a mamba X will even start slower than the AXE.

I have full belief that if the Mamba X was in stock anywhere... I would've ended up with that and one of your motors instead of my two trucks with Axe systems. That being said, I do like the Axe systems. When upgrade time comes, I'll be looking again at HH and your brushless systems. I only purchase your brushed motors as it stands.

I’ve already had two axe systems mess up. I gave both of them to my local dealer (Dixieland rc) for a 1080 and a Holmes motor. You have great stuff, use to have a brxl and a crawlmaster pro and sold them. Still going strong. And looking forward to exocaged rc’s review of the 400 he has gotten from you the other day. Thank you for the great products. And I’ll stick with hobbywing just for racing.

I'm going to take your word for it and do that combo on my wraith 1.9. I have the hobbywing fusion 1800kv in a rig and a axe550 2700kv in another. My bomber has a mamba x crawler setup and for my wraith I want to do something HH.

I'm fairly new to your videos and they're very informative and straight to the point without the bs about how every car is great. Love how your honest about stuff. As for this video,I tried several of my friends brushless crawlers and imo they're just ok. They even joke with me due to the fact I'm still using brushed motors and nimh batteries but my crawlers are dialed and majority of the time mine out perform their brushless stuff,lol. It's all about driving skill and how dialed you can get your rig,lol

I installed a Mamba X and a Holmes Hobbies Revolver motor (sensorless) in my TRX-4. With the programming capability of the Mamba X, that thing can crawl amazingly slow and maintain consistent speed. And what a torque monster. Love it. Nice video.

Having done Brushless in several vehicles now, I am sold on them.. so long as they are sensored. The tough choice here is to really justify nearly doubling, or more, the value of the Redcat Scout. Even doing the SW4 and low kv 6 pole like the TenShock still is quite a bit to put into the rig. Of course if the Scout turns out that it is a durable platform (we already know its a really capable trail truck with good crawling) which we can't decide for at least another 6 months, then I say we got one heck of a deal on the truck and worth the investment to switch to brushless. No point in doing it if the rig can't handle it without even more money for upgrades.

I've run the castle creations crawler in my TRX4 for some time and it gives the ability to move forwards by the mm, literally by the mm as it's sensored. However it costs nearly $200, so I think a lot of people would struggle to justify adding that to a $300 crawler like the gen8. Particularly if you're switching from nimh to lipo at the same time - add in a new charger and batteries and that's another $100-200 on top. You have to look at it as a long term investment. That said the gen8 as stock seems very, very jerky when compared to my brushless TRX4. It's not bad it's just the castle setup is so good.

I did the same with the Monster X/1900kv Slate and 9 tooth pinion.. what a creeper. But I agree, we will have to wait a bit to see how the parts hold up initially on the Scout to decide if its worth it to switch. Without a pinion change, I think the HW Axe FOC is probably going to be the best setup for the Scout, it might be a bit slow for punch and for top end, but my other brushless crawlers I lower the punch anyway, I'm not trying to drag race them.

@Game Bred Duramax I agree, however Driftomaniacs did not specify what kv motor he installed, he did say its the crawler motor so unless he installed a 2300+ kv motor he may only be just barely faster than stock brushed. I use the Slate 1900 and pinioned to 9t, use a 2s and the guys running stock pinion/spur with 7cell nimh outrun me. Just because its brushless doesn't mean its faster. For the Scout, probably going to have to go with at least a 2850kv to keep up with a full TRX-4.

Driftomaniac Pretty sure that I once heard Holmes Hobbies say that, with the right brushless setup you can have a smoother startup and lower crawl speed than most brushed motors.. I find that statement to be very true.

@@TerraQuestRC yes you can , its just gonna cost 3 times the amount than a nice brushed setup. ... so just gotta think abour price to performance ratio if its worth it for you or that particular rig... i have like 8 rigs i cant justify spending the money on a brushless in my crawler that is strictly A CRAWLER . I already have a bomber and a wraith both with mamba x and one with a castle slate , and one with a puller pro. I can tune the mamba x punch , drag, startup power, etc etc and play with pinion size to get it to crawl slower than my dedicated crawler. But i rather have those as go fast rock race , bouncer type rigs. If some day i run out of other crap to buy for all my rc i would throw a brushless setup in my crawler. If i had only one or two rigs , yes its worth it to invest in a good brushless for your crawler. If you got 9 rigs so you whole family can play and dont wan a spend 20 grand setting up all of them up completly tricked out then youre fine with a decent speed controller like a sidewinder and a cheap holmes trailmaster brushed motor. I just wish the sidewinder had drag brake curve like the mamba x does and it would be perfect for brushed. But i cant justify $150 vs $70 for a esc just for drag brake curve.

i use the 21 turn trial master sport in my slash and rustler. great motors for $20 I put the 27 turn in my TRX 4 bronco with a 9 tooth pinion. crawling by the millimeter. go super slow with tons of torque and still plenty of trial speed in high range.

I admit that my traxxas esc lasted about a week.. Went to my local hobby shop and got a stock hpi venture esc for 10 bucks and have been running that system with no problems for over a year. And I'm totally submerging my trx4 in water and mud and it's still running strong... The secret is cleaning it after every run... by taking my air compressor and cleaning all the water off it, if you let it sit covered in water and mud it's just not going to last

I put a $20 holmes hobby trial master sport 27 turn in my TRX 4 bronco. they have bearings on both ends of the shaft and last forever in the TRX 4. $20 best brushed motor for the money. holmes hobby trial master sport 27 turn or 21 turn. I put a 21 turn in my rustler and it is awesome. such a smooth brushed motor.

Interesting video, thanks! An old friend of mine has a RC tugboat with a 12V brushed motor which is still going strong after 28 years of hard work! He has had to replace couplings and propshaft bearings twice in all those years, but the motor is as strong as ever! I have small size brushed Industrial motors which are cheap, extremely long lasting, totally silent and have a kv rating of approx. 166. That provides all the scope you could wish for in slow speed modulation! That said, I do see the benefits of a system like the Axe.

Picked up a Sidewinder4 and its perfect for low speed control with a sensorless motor. Using a Tenshock 1750 crawler motor and the slow speed start up is near perfect. SW4 is the reason..newest software for crawling. Sidewinder4 is also perfect with the Holmes Revolver

The polarity of the brushes is constant. It's the electromagnet that rotates it's contacts with the brushes to switch it's polarity inside of the static constant polarity of the exterior magnets. The brushless motor rotates the outer magnets around the fixed central electromagnet with electronics to switch the center polarity.

Brushed motors will do just fine and even better than brushless motors under water, dirt can get into a brushed motor but some motor clean can fix that. Also not all brushless motors are 100% sealed. I’ve opened up many in my day and I just find sand and mud in them. I’d honestly stay brushed because they’re just so cheap to replace.

Like he states, if you are looking for the ultimate in punch, longterm reliability, and smoothness, brushless is the way to go. But it's expensive and you don't get everything you want in one package. I'm literally on the fence with my TRX4 about this, cause I like the lighting it has and want to add more, but I also want a bit more speed for trail usage without having to go to a two speed transmission. I've thought about a Holmes Hobbies Trailmaster 21 turn, but not sure if the overall vehicle speed would be enough for my liking.

I put a surpass hobby 4276 2200kv with a hobbywing EZRUN max10 into my Element Enduro Trail walker 16T pinion and 57t steel integy spur. It was a rought fit cause the motor mounting holes where hard to fit but it did lol. It's got alot my torque n gained maybe 10 more miles an hour. But it hesitates at low throttle like crawling it cogs ect... So I'm taking it back out n gonna try a 3660 3300kv just for fun. which I'm losing power but it may end up doing better who knows lol.. but I'm most likely going back to stock until I pick up a new sensored motor.

Hobbywing now has waterproof brushless motor I think it's called Xerun Axe R2. Now I know the ESC is not water proof, but brushed system's ESC is probably not good with water anyways. Newbie here so I am not sure about ESCs, and I don't put my crawlers through water anyways.

Brushless motors are cheap for my DIY quadcopters. I buy them 4 at a time, each with their own separate ESCs (don't trust all-in-one types due to the electronic noise). Even my huge 4215 motors are cheap at S15 each. I don't understand why it's so bloody expensive for crawlers. A 2100kv one typically goes for what... $100? That much for just 1 motor! On the other hand, an okay 45T or 55T brushed motor can be had for just $20 thereabouts, and because you're crawling at low speeds you're not likely to wear out the brushes anytime soon..

I was into cars since the first Associated RC-10. Got out of the hobby for a while then got into RC aircraft where EVERYTHING is brushless. Now I'm looking at cars/trucks again and I'm shocked there are still brushed motors. I don't care if with crawlers it is not as big a deal, RC gear is relatively cheap now. I'll never run brushed again. I'd take that brand new brushed motor out and replace it with brushless.

The Mamba X is far more adjustable than the Axe, has the 3rd channel aux control and mixed with a Holmes Hobby Puller Pro, starts up at 100rpm lower than the Axe. It's more expensive but pretty much superior in every single way.

So just a heads up guys Holmes hobbies just created a new low geared 18 tooth brushless motor but it's 150 bare without the esc,receiver, so, I have a Traxxas velvoline motor the full esc and 7 channel reciever and know just the esc and the motor are over 170 dollars just a heads up,but if you just want to keep doing brushed they only will run about fifteen hours and the brushes go bad but a good one is about thirty dollars a piece it's up to you.

Holmes revolver motors with sw4 or mamba x has killer low end control. Handles better than most brushed motors with those two esc. Mind you using any other esc for that motor you won't get near the same low end control as far as I am aware. Also it's quite a bit cheaper than a censored brushless setup as well.

Hi great video. A quick question how do I come about using a brushless motor and integrated BEC at 7.4v and still use my micro servers from my TRX4 Defender. Maybe you could help me make that decision. I was thinking in using the Hobbywing AXE 540L 2800kV. Is this power adequate for crawling and trail? I don't to add too much speed to the vehicle. I prefer playing slow and technical. Also I would like to upgrade to the Savoy SW-1210SG you recommended on another video. How do I setup the BEC from the esc and still keep the micro servos at 6v? Thanks for any help you may give.

sensored brushless means the motor knows where it is in each rotation cycle. That translates to better low speed and braking control. This is very important for crawlers. High speed bashers don't need this too much.

Unless it’s super high quality brushed is better at least for crawlers, I like my brushed motors and brushless, brushed is less hastle though when it comes to maintenance and setup

Great video as always ! I am thinking about changing the Enduro Sendero motor and the main reason is because my son find it very slow when trailing compared to the Bronco TRX4 Bronco (in 2nd gear). In your opinion, will the Hobbywing Axe help getting a trailing speed on the Enduro similar to the Bronco even though it is a single gear setup ? Thanks !

May work for low speed, not so much for high.. that is a 775 with 5mm shaft your talking about replacing with a 540 sized motor. Smallest I think you can get away with for moving that monster is a 550 sized can.

I buy the AXE because i need the waterproofing .every brushed motor i use struggle in longer submerged rides because this i buy the AXE set. Show me a strong waterresistant brushed and i am back at brushed.My runs are 95% rocky rivers.

Waterproofing is a great benefit of brushless. Brushed really isn't made for it with those big vent holes for water and dirt to get in the brushes.

Have to admit when you say $200 is not much it just eats at me! To those of us that live on budget $200 is a hell of a lot for a motor setup & hard to justify. That said, yeah I would consider saving up to install a brushless system, ya'll ain't wrong, they've got everything we Crawlers want. As a Builder it makes no difference which I design into a rig, I let my Client decide because for them cost is the bottom line. I'll be installing a brushless system in 1 of my current projects, I think it will do well...it's really not an easy decision unless you run in a lot of mud & water. Good video tho, ya'll raise some very interesting points.

$200 is a lot of money, especially since our complete car is only $300. It's not that much only if you are upgrading the whole car and will spend several hundred $$. So sorry for the confusion. We think there are a lot more cost-effective upgrades rather than the brushless motor. It's the 5th or 6th upgrade only when folks are looking for that final piece of performance. And we like the free upgrades first. And there are a lot of good ones out there.

I bought my brushless Set 2300kv 60A ESC from Chinese online Shop for only 46€ and it works fine since 4years shure i could buy one kit for 200€ but why if the cheap one works in my crawler?!
