My isp only supports rcs on its own customers and only certain Samsung phones support it on their network. Meanwhile I can still use iMessage with anyone with an iPhone, google did not think this through 😮

Android Instant Messenger [RCS] is great. I've made sure all my friends have it enabled & it's more fun. Google has brought lots of updates over the last year. the different colour chat bubbles help identify an instant message from SMS/MMS. for those who say I don't know how, I feel are a little lazy cos accessing settings is one tap away inside the app. but as people who know how to do these things & know that Android now has built in Instant Messaging, we should be having these conversations with other people.

This video summed it up nicely. Point is, This is only a issue in the U.S. Every other country uses a 3rd party app. In America, people don't as often do that, They use the default messaging app. I'm amazed the steps Andriod users have to go through just to enable it? Sure it's not hard but when I had my parents a Android phone, They would no way know or want to go through those steps. However when I hand them a iPhone and all they do is simply sign into their iCloud account, They can instantly use iMessage. It's just easier for most people.

I don't really understand actually. Even my old grandma knows how to use WhatsApp. And Americans say that "it is inconvenient". I always treat iMessage is a cool way to interact with my family as all of them use iPhones and iMessage is a fun thing. But for everything else, I use WhatsApp all the time. This is blatantly untrue, if you have google or google message it uses RCS by default. The problem comes when "Samsung message" is the default app for messaging on the new phone you upgraded to or purchased and the user doesn't change the default. There is an update though: all samsung galaxy phones now use google message with RCS as their default now.

Everyone at my work environment has an iPhone, and I'm usually the only person that causes the group chat bubble to be "green", and I would always get the "laughed at an image" text when someone reacts to an image in the group chat from an iPhone. My coworkers know that I don't get the emoji react, and they make jokes about it sometimes (not in a mean way). Now, I can't wait to get back at all of them with the new update that lets me see the emoji reaction and REACT BACK, they will get the "laughed at an image" text from me all the freaking time! Can't wait to have it on my Pixel 6 Pro! Lol

Unfortunately I only have 1 person that I text with that has an Android phone and we both have RCS enabled. Everyone else, including my family have Apple phones and it can be a problem when trying to chat to each other in a family group text. I wish Apple would just get on board with RSC texting and stop acting like they are only and best texting messaging app out there. RCS is not going to hurt them in any way, they just don't want to do it.

I’m guessing the reason why they act that way is because their RCS equivalent came out over 11 years ago and constantly upgrading, while google is just finally achieving it now but still behind. It would be nice for all of us to be able to use that standard. And countries cut backs on SMS service, charging them per msg, or just couple hundred per month, then why don't I use mobile data which should be getting more and more cheaper as 4G/5G evolve and multimedia is taking our life every second of it. I usually switch every other phone. For iPhone it's basically just for iMessage. But I don't even use it all that much so I always switch back to Android because I mostly prefer it tbh. I can use the former if I need to but if they both had RCS it would be a wrap lol.

We lazy Americans aren't willing to do anything other than turn on our devices. We definitely aren't going to dig into the settings or download any other messaging app. Chat features need to be turned on by default (like iMessage on iPhones) in order for it to be ubiquitous within Android (at least here in the US).

I think the following should be done to guide people and companies to transition to RCS: - Set a firm ending date for support of MMS 10 full years in the future (if established this year the end date would be 1 Jan 2024). That way every phone currently use would been replaced at least once, and the new phones would have an RCS-compatible app preloaded just like they currently have a texting app preloaded now. - An end-to-end SMS encryption app is released that, when activated at both ends, automatically encrypts SMS messages. This will add a needed feature that will deal with a shortcoming of SMS, because I think SMS is still useful for its original purpose of sending short text messages and provides a backup method texting or when someone just wants to do simple texting. - The ending date hits and support for MMS ends. Although everyone can still send text messages to each other via SMS regardless of OS when RCS is not available, no one can send anything else (including pictures, emojis, and video/audio files) to non-iMessage users without RCS. I think this would strongly encourage the full adoption of RCS by those companies/individuals who have not already done so since SMS/MMS can't be used as a fall back. - Five full years later support for SMS is dropped unless there is still a demand for it. By this time RCS has been fully implemented and is now the standard for messenging. The reason for the long times is to give everyone of time to move to RCS so that it can be fairly painless and convenient.

rcs isn’t currently more secure as sms. the distraction here is pointing fingers at imessage and also other messaging apps like telegram and whatsapp and others. there may be some validity to that but that is not the heart of the problem. the crux main problem is rcs’s technological implementation. many aspects of rcs requires carrier configurations which are independent of the specified draft, introducing in a mix of nonstandard configurations. and, there is a lack of uniformity in-house for rcs, which needs to iron out aspects of security - being a platform independent of the carrier. it also requires both ends of the party sending messages to have it enabled. it should have end to end encryption enabled across the board by default. while all this still needs to be sorted out, users have other options which are better.

I took the text message backup from my iPhone. Most of these text messages were simple SMS which companies send when you buy something online e.g. "Thx you for shopping, you spent 3$ here.." When I moved these SMS to my android (Samsung), all of them show as MMS on android. Any clue why its so?

I have friends in India and abroad and some of them have iPhones and most of them at large don’t use iMessage. Because most of chats and important group texts are on whatsapp. If RCS kind of feature is brought in video call then Facetime will take a hit. And the ecosystem will be endangered.

This is good but still somewhat inaccurate, rcs is a communication protocol developed to eventually replace sms. It uses encryption via the signal protocol, which signal themselves use. So it's secure, there is literally no reason for apple to not support it

Stating that Apple won’t support RCS in iMessage shows a lack of understanding of what iMessage is. The app is called Messages, the service is called iMessage. iMessage doesn’t support SMS or MMS - the messaging app supports SMS, MMS, and iMessage. (Messages supports sending as SMS when iMessage doesn’t send properly, for example, but that’s the app and not iMessage itself) I see no technical reason why Apple couldn’t support RCS in Messages alongside iMessage, apart from the desire to give iMessage (and therefore iPhones) a larger separation from their competitors. That does get them more sales… but for customers really thinking about it, we should feel insulted that Apple doesn’t allow us better communication with users outside their ecosystem all in the name of squeezing out more sales from on-the-fence users (or peer-pressured teenagers who feel the need to have iMessage for social acceptance, because kids are mean to each other) As for the “stigma” around bubble colors in Messages… I don’t doubt some people are petty and actually stigmatize others for green message bubbles, but for the rest of us it’s annoying to use SMS because it’s such an outdated standard and so many features are lost as a result. SMS bubbles tell me I need another method to share quality photos/videos or PDFs, among other things. By not adopting RCS, Apple is making the UX worse for their own customers and penalizing us for the phone choice of someone else. That’s asinine, and honestly it should make us upset with Apple - they may not be nearly as greedy as Google, but they’re still guilty of corporate greed. Perhaps it’s time for carriers to mandate RCS adoption. If it became default on Android and they discontinued SMS/MMS the way they are 3G, it would force Apple to adopt RCS.

It’s not really Apple that’s perpetuating the stigma around green bubbles though. It’s mostly just kids that have and weirdly enough young adults that care too much what teenagers think and do. All Apple is guilty of is providing the de facto standard for messaging when they came out with iMessage earlier on which inspired copycats like RCS. It’s also not an issue when a plethora of apps offer similar if not better services. I’m thinking Telegram’s 1.5GB transfer sizes for videos, photos, and files + the FREE international reach social networks offer. Just because RCS became a standard doesn’t make it the best option for everyone, and as such not every company should be required to fall in line. That’s all part of promoting a free market. Instances where standards compete are IMAX VS AVX, OpenVPN VS IPSec, heck even state testing standards vary and we’re better because of it. All Google is trying to do is undermine Apple’s and other companies’ dominant positions to put their interests ahead.

Carriers. One of the things Google has to do to get carriers on board with RCS at all is to make it an option for users rather than the default. Carriers have been the main barrier to RCS success for years, and it's strange that this video made no mention of their continuing meddling

RCS is great, but it cannot and should not be implemented by the carriers because they butcher it e.g. at&t. I've been dealing with this issue of inconsistent text messaging because the rcs isn't through Google in Google messages, but instead through the carrier and it's really bad.

Apple not supporting RCS for the benefit of all users is similar to Sony not going all-in on cross-platform gaming with Microsoft for the benefit of PlayStation and Xbox gamers.

I think it would be beneficial for Apple to introduce iMessage for Android. That way, they can keep their Apple users happy and gain new users on the Android side of the fence. I personally think that Apple should not incorporate RCS as a default messaging system. However, I think it might be nice to at least offer it as a third-party messaging app to let Apple users decide if they want to use it or not. Maybe Apple might do that someday but I'm sure it's going to have to meet whatever strict guidelines it lays out for the app. Maybe those who run RCS simply don't want to bother with that.

Apple allows FaceTime for Android, too. And they completely gimped it, I haven't used it once. SMS is still being used by all phones, I don't see why RCS is not a clear cut upgrade.

I have an iPhone and turn iMessage off. I don’t see what the big deal is,honestly; I would rather have a consistent bubble color than a few features that I would use only occasionally.

Gosh, to me it seems like it's on google to make the uptake on RCS be significant before complaining about Apple. Apple assiduously pushes toward better experience for its users. RCS is only going to do that if it's widely adopted.

Not sure why anyone would not enable RCS. Just for the encryption and high resolution file sharing makes it worthwhile. Green bubble shaming isn't going away anytime soon either. As long as the narrative is, iPhone users are elite, phone shaming will exist.

It’s literally the same as iMessage lol it’s just the default everywhere outside the US, when people get a phone the first thing they do is download WhatsApp, at least in my country every cellphone carrier offers unlimited WhatsApp messaging so that you don’t spend your data and even if you run out you can still use WhatsApp. I get iMessage is cool, but in most countries only a minority of people have iPhones, so it’s annoying and impractical to use iMessage. Because WhatsApp is the norm, it’s not like android users will just give WhatsApp up and start using sms to please the minority of iOS users. It’s literally the opposite that happens in the US. If Apple made a real budget phone then it would be another story, bc everyone would buy one. But then they’d loose their “exclusivity”.

In Australia it's a 50/50 split ios vs android but in other parts of Asia iphone just doesn't exist. I've encountered carriers in Asia that don't support imesssge at all There are no apple stores in many countries

iMessage does not require a carrier to support it. Clearly you don’t know what on earth you are talking about. iMessage is sent via internet connection, not as an SMS or MMS standard. As long as a phone has internet access iMessage can be sent, even without a mobile plan or carrier. But android users always make up trash when they don’t understand how things work. That’s why iMessage is so great. All you need is an Apple device and iMessage is automatic. MacBook, iPad, Apple Watch, iPhone, iPod. Instant access to iMessage with no need for a phone number. Simple, clean, and entirely superior than any google made rubbish.

@@DementedPiXi in Cambodia my iPhone kept telling me that Imessage isn't supported. It is supported on WiFi but I never said it wasn't. Maybe travel outside of your own country before commenting again

Ngl it seems like apple made a great messaging platform and then google decided to copy it and proceed to throw a fit because apple won’t adopt it. I mean apple didn’t demand everyone else to adopt their messaging system smh. Also google isn’t doing themselves any favors by having rcs turned off by default.
