This OpenTx tutorial from rcvideoreviews.com shows you a much better, much safer throttle cutoff. You'll get the added benefit of learning a little bit about Logical Switches and Sticky Logical switches.
The techniques in this video are shown on a Radiomaster TX16s, but they will work on any OpenTx platform including Taranis, Jumper, Turnigy, etc.

When I was watching this and trying to get sense out it, I said why not just go to especial function and just assign a switch to override throttle channel, but it’s finally making sense that if the assigned switch is accidentally switch off and say the throttle is at 60% there’ll be no output until the conditions are met, bring the throttle to -99 for it to be active. Good safety feature, on not to have accidental spool up when override switch is somewhat disengage. Making sense to me now.

As a newbie to the TX16S world, I have been studying videos on everything that I can apply to my fixed wing use. Like many folks here and elsewhere, I have been cut by my electric planes more times than I care to admit. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos. I am going to incorporate this switch set up for all of my fixed wing plane model templates.

I just received my TX16s and am pretty excited about all it can do. Your videos are very helpful, even though we are all moving past OpenTx to EdgeTx. I did not like the conventional throttle cut and really liked your take on it. I have implemented a variation on it that you might be interested in. I don't fly electric but I do use an ignition cutoff module in my gas planes. I have always been reluctant to assign a big easy-to-bump paddle switch to the ignition cutoff. It is far more likely that I will hit it accidentally than my plane will start itself once the ignition is armed. Thanks to EdgeTx, I found a solution I like. When the radio starts, the trottle is overridden to -100 as is the ignition cutoff channel. There is one logical switches for this. It is a sticky switch that goes true when Trim6 is pressed up and goes false when Trim6 is pushed down. That true condition is when the ignition is armed. Special functions set the ignition off when the L0x is false and on when it is true. The radio announces the armed and disarmed condition with the pressing of Trim6. Now I feel better about the risk of accidentially shutting off a 1/4 scale plane. Again, thank you for your videos and I am sure I will comment on others.

Not bad - it happened 2 or 3 times that I accidentally got power to the engine by flipping the switch. But also it happened once that I just hand-started my plane by myself and then I accitentally flipped the cut-off-switch in that critical starting-phase. The engine of course stopped immediately and I had half a second why the f... the dammed thing didn't work anymore. After a more or less happy landing I looked on the remote and found the cut-off to be active. A way to prevent this is to add a 3rd logical switch which defines the reset-condition of the 2nd (Sticky) switch as : L3 = a

This is a great video. I used to use the old simple throttle method. After seeing your other video I tweaked mine a little bit further by introducing a third Edge logical switch in the mix. This prevents throttle activation when the switch is in correct position and you then lower the throttle down to -100. With this you have to have low throttle and then flip the switch. Great videos, inspired me to do more stuff with opentx. Keep them coming. It is much appreciated.

This is a great tutorial, it was easy to follow. I have a question though - this is a relatively complicated set of steps that will need to be duplicated for all models. Is there such a thing as macros in EdgeTX that would let me define these steps, and invoke that macro when setting up a new model - instead of repeating each individual step?

excellent safety tip - love your videos man! keep them coming. Now, I already know you are not into helicopters. I‘d therefore like to add a WORD OF CAUTION for intermediate to advanced HELI-PILOTS who are planning on learning AUTOROTATION. When you go through practicing autorotation landings, you will eventually come to a point where you cut your throttle in flight, autorotate your heli and find yourself in a situation where you have to abort the autorotation. A reason could be that your heli is too far away from your desired landing spot and you do not wish to park it in between the vegetables 🌽 🍅 In this case if you have this safety function active, you will need to also pull down your throttle stick to the bottom to re-activate you engine. since however throttle and collective pitch are on the same stick for helicopters, you would also move collective pitch to full negative which would make your heli come down even faster. More realistically you will not even remember that you have to do that and the engine won‘t restart and your heli will start harvesting the potatoes. my recommendation in short: If you practice autorotation on a helicopter, do not use this function! As a heli pilot you may want to not use it at all whether you practice autorotations or not. I will however activate this on all my planes and copters. Thanks again and a big thumbs up for this channel! 😎👍

@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 2 жыл бұрын
This is pretty easy to do. You need three logical switches. L03 will replace L01 in the example: L01 - THR < xxx (high point of your trim range) L02 - THR > xxx (low point of your trim range) These two should be setup using values for x that define what you consider to be safe. In the video, my definition of safe was < 99. Finally: L03 - AND L01 L02 AND SHdown.

one thing that would be a big help to this. Awesome safety step by the way. How do you ad a voice warning that the "throttle is high" when this setup stops the throttle from working?
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 4 жыл бұрын
That's easy: Remember NOT L2 is the condtion in which we override Throttle. So just create in L3: a>x I:THR -99 AND !L2 This translates to: Anytime the throttle stick is not at idle and L2 is not set, ACTIVATE. In Special Functions: L3 Play Track "Throttle Warning" or whatever alarm you can find that meets your need. If you only want the warning when the throttle stick is at least halfway up or more, then: L3: a>x I:THR 0 AND !L2

👍👍👍👍👍Great video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a question about open tx : Problem: The Apprentice S , has a safety feature that requires the receiver to be turned off by a power switch before the battery is connected in order to be able to arm the motor later when the switch is turned on. The problem starts when I want to use this receiver in another plane, that does not have a on/off switch. If i power the ESC without the on/off switch on traditional configurations then the receiver send the signal to the ESC which put it in safe mode/ locked mode and then motor does not arm. But if I physically disconnect the receiver, connect the batteries and then connect the receiver the problem is solved. Question: Is there a way to program a switch(virtual switch/logical switch ) in OPENTX that simulated a physical switch between the esc and the receiver? The idea is to avoid for a few seconds powering the receiver after the battery is connected to the ESC. Then use this programing/virtual switch, to later power the receiver so the motor gets armed. Please let me know if you have any advice or if this is even possible with OPENTX. Thanks Alex

Is it possible to have the radio play the throttle warning if you attempt to arm when your throttle isn't below -99?
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 2 жыл бұрын
If your lock switch is SFup for example, you can make a logic switch that says a>x -99 AND SFup. When you move SFup in this case and the throttle is not -100 the logic switch will go active. With an active logic switch you can use that to trigger a special function to play a track in your soundpack.

You probably need some sort of sticky switch that says once throttle is armed and throttle stick is moved past idle, override the throttle cutoff switch. Then you'll need more logic to allow you to re-arm on the ground. It starts to get messy doing that IMHO.

So yeah all in all so far so good I even have two whippets set up one Whippet S which has the original Spektrum RX and is in repair and the Whippet with a bangood dsm micro rx and two hobby king micro servos which was repaired but wire to power came adrift so now I make a micro soldering iron wound copper wire round tip of iron see if I can fix have some very thing solder too I better add I am kitchen workshop kinda chap not a engineer lol

Why would this work for one plane and not another? Two different planes with same settings for throttle cut just as you laid out. Weird problem.

That's a great way of increasing throttle safety, great for planes & drones too I guess. Let me ask you this though. I fly helis, and when the heli spools up, I'd like to be able to create a logical switch that will only disengage Throttle cut when my pitch channel is around mid stick, or 0° pitch (say between -05 and +05) instead of what you did with throttle stick at < -99% Is that possible? Thanks!!
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 4 жыл бұрын
Sure, just substitute the throttle check I did @ -99 for your pitch value @ 0. You could also do setup where you have: L1 - Pitch is > -5 L2 - Pitch is < +5 L3 - L1 AND L2 Then L3 becomes your L1 like I used in the video.

I am helping a club member new to open tx (so am I) and have found that if the throttle is high and you go to arm the throttle will not go active, good, but if the throttle is brought down whilst the switch is in the armed position it will go active. Is this correct or have I missed something in the setup? I thought the throttle should not go active until you disarm and then rearm with the throttle low?
@RCVideoReviews

Something is wrong. Maybe watch the video again. Throttle should be inactive until it reaches zero.

@@RCVideoReviews This is what is happening the throttle is high then arm no throttle, locked. You bring the throttle to zero (-100) while in the arm state and then raise the throttle and it is away and running. It has reached the zero state while armed then it is active, it's not locked out. Should it remain locked until you disarm then rearm?

@@tala23ful There is no particular order of battle in this logic setup. Two conditions have to be met for the throttle lock to become active: Condition 1) Throttle < 99. Condition 2) Arm switch armed. That's it. If you complete both of those conditions, the throttle is armed. You could add logic to ensure the throttle cut is disarmed first, then the throttle is dropped to 0, then the throttle cut is disarmed. But the video at approximately 8:00 shows exactly what is supposed to happen and exactly how it happens. There is no additional criteria for the logic steps I used in this setup.

I must be stupid! wrote this logic 4 times, tried to change switches still don't work! In fact, when I put the throttle halfway up and turn the switch to arm the motor, I can't disarm it by moving the switch back, unless the throttle is all the way down to zero. Just the opposite of what I want!

Thank you very much, been using your throttle cut setup for all of my models. Ran into a problem I could use some help on regarding this setup. I have a couple gasoline models that I used this setup on and it works, unless of course I adjust the idle using the trim. If the trim value in the flight mode tab is anything other than zero, then throttle cut is always active. What is the workaround to have the safety feature of throttle cut on a gasoline (or nitro) model while still being able to adjust the minimum idle as needed? Great videos!!
@RCVideoReviews
@RCVideoReviews 3 жыл бұрын
Set v2 in L01 to a level that accommodates your trim. i.e. L01 requires the stick to be < -99. If you're using trim the stick might be -85. So change L01 to be < -85. Just beware that any stick position between -100 and -85 will satisfy L01 and allow arming.

Thanks for the info. I need to watch this about 20 more times before I think it will make total sense to my brain. I use the SA 2 position on the left for throttle cut. I would like to try to set the following: 1. For throttle cut: SA switch toward me, and the throttle is cut at any throttle stick percentage. no issues here. 2. For throttle active: Throttle stick low, momentary switch SH is pulled towards me, and then SA stick is then set away from me. Release SH and throttle remains active. Is it possible to use a momentary switch in this fashion? In other words, I want the throttle arm switch to only be active when the momentary SH is activated and throttle is low, but then throttle to work normally once the momentary SH is released. The reason I would like to do this is I would like to set my system so, that like a gas plane, the prop idles constantly when throttle cut is disabled. Obviously with that set, anytime you move the throttle cut disabled the prop will be turning. Having to pull the momentary switch and then activating the throttle enable, along with throttle being low, ensures the "engine start" is warranted and at idle. Looks more scale that way :) I love electric but hate the prop stopping and starting all of the time at low throttle. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide here.

The logic on opentx is pretty flexible. You may need to take a look at experimenting with sticky and/or edge switches to do what you want with the momentary switch.

@@RCVideoReviews Here is what I came up with so far. Logical switch 01 is throttle less than 99 and SH (momentary) towards me for 5 seconds arms the throttle. This “starts” the motor because I have the throttle endpoint set so it runs the motor at lowest rpm. The SF switch moved away from me disarms the throttle and stops the motor spinning. Visually you know when plane is armed as motor is spinning. Motor will not start unless throttle is low AND momentary switch is held for 5 seconds. Initial status of SF doesn’t matter but if I leave it in the forward position it takes a full toggle to disarm the motor so safe in the fact that I can’t accidentally bump it. I will ponder the ramifications of this setup but so far seems like basically what I was looking for.

Yeah everybody has gripes about throttle cutoff. This way and you kill your plane. Without the extra safety you cut off your finger. If it’s not for you it’s not for you. I’ve shown both ways to do it and both ways get gripes. So chose your poison. Edit, Actually I've shown three ways to do it with the quad style cutoff and that got gripes too.
