You are So right in giving such High praise to Both Teams and all involved! Their hard, "FREE" work is absolutely invaluable to make it all possible for the hobby to move on to the next level of having so much control over what can be done with the radios. I finally flashed my OpenTX radio to EdgeTX a couple months ago. It was a worthwhile upgrade and I don't regret it for a minute.

One area I thought you might have touched as a possible reason why OpenTX's is coming to an end. Was the link between FrSky and OpenTX, that wasn't really there. But it was at the beginning, then when Jumper, and Radiomaster started release Awesome radios for an amazing prices and FrSky did some stupid greedy practices which killed their brand overnight. They were impeding on OpenTX developers to support any Radio that was FrSky. I believe that was the start of the end in my eyes, I might have it wrong, but that what I remeber. I started in FPV in 2017ish (haven't touch my gear in over two years), and OpenTX was one of those projects that I clean honestly solid development. Kinda like what CleanFlight did for BaseFlight. I haven't used EdgeTX yet, in fact my TX16S is still running OpenTX if I remember correctly. I wanted to see Edge get more of a following, and I slipped out of the hobby, I will get back to it someday. RemoteID, and RDQ legial loss really done me in. Anyways, all good things come to an end. Or in this case, come to an "Edge". Sad thing is I still own two Taranis.

OpenTX was a great learning experience for me. The development that EdgeTX did to the touch screen was amazing. Great review John. Keep up the good work.

OpenTX was a great starting place, and it's sad that the project petered out, but it has and it's time we all moved on. My First (and so far, only) OpenTX radio was my Eachine TX16s, that came with an old OpenTX and a sticker saying "Must use OpenTX version 2.6 before touch screen works", but it was pretty obvious to me at that point that I was going to have to move as there were no signs that any releases were coming - and as you showed, nothing major, just minor revisions. It's great that they started the movement, and it's even better that the EdgeTX team stepped in, stepped up, and plotted the way forward.

I was in the process of learning Deviation software when I learned of OpenTX. So glad I decided to spend my effort learning OpenTX! Then Radiomaster popped in. The rest is history. I'm running EdgeTX 2.9 on my 2nd Gen. RadioMasterTX16S. I'd like the Mark II, but I have made/added so many changes, I don't want the fuss of upgrading the physical radio itself. Thanks for all of YOUR help along the way!!!!

I just went through that--physical radio upgrade. It wasn't as easy as I thought, but not hard enough to stop me. Anyway, I'm glad my videos helped you along the way.

I was heavily involved in the early open tx stuff, was one of the first to have taranis and did a lot of lua scripting, I learned a LOT doing it and made some online buddies at the same time. I still use open tx and my taranis and xlite too but don't really fly much anymore. I think ti petered out when all the cheaper radios started coming out that used opentx but werent really supporting the opentx team but the demand on their time was a LOT. It felt like we were being taken advantage of and just turning what was a fun hobby into a job that wasnt really much fun anymore so the end was inevitable and it just took someone else who was happy to to it as a business to take it further. Kind of sad but that's just the way things go and it's just like letting go of your baby I guess , you just hope it grows into something good still and doesnt lose its way and end up just another boring part of the system lol.

I still prefer OTX to EdgeTx. Easier and more intuitive interface. Can get things done faster and easier at least for planes. I’m not a drone guy, so I don’t know what advantages Edge has in that realm, but for planes and just plain ease of use, OTX is my choice. If I buy a new radio with Edge on it, I’ll be flashing OTX.

Started with DeviationTX 5 years ago with a multi protocol Jumper T8SG. Intended to move to OpenTX, but then EdgeTX came along. Will wait a little longer before buying in 😀

Not for bashing EdgeTx, but, when they release 2nd or 3th version, i try it with high cost. In mid flight, radio just frozen, and my expensive heli (F3C comp) crashed. They was more oriented to graphics design. So, i'll remain on OTX, as i dont need touch screen or fancy design. Also, i try it again EdgeTx on Frsky Xlite pro. On a simple LUA for 3Digi FBL, i cant use it, because i have no more memory left. So, everyone should just fly whatever they like.

Still using a QX7 running OpenTx. I have many planes, quads, & heli models on it. My understanding is you can't use companion to move models .otx files from Open to Edge. I have no interest in migrating each model manually. My plan is to let my radio die, then get a Radiomaster running EdgeTx.

I think if you check this link and look at the changelog of EdgeTX since the release version of 2.4.0 you'll find just how incredibly wrong the above statement is: github.com/EdgeTX/edgetx/compare/v2.4.0...v2.9.0 EdgeTX has substantially changed since it forked from OpenTX. While the core functionalities are similar, Edge has undergone a great deal of improvement.

I have two Taranis X9D transmitters running EdgeTx. Updating process is the same as for a Radiomaster Tx16, but of course you have to select the appropriate binary file. You'll probably need to flash a new bootloader before you flash EdgeTx, but that's not too hard. The bootloader is built into the EdgeTx download. Search YT for a tutorial if you haven't flashed a bootloader before.

EdgeTX has never worked on my TX16s without errors/bugs. OTX has been stable....will stick to it.

I put Edge TX on my Jumper TX 12 Pro. Performance suffered. Reinstalled Open TX now it runs fine again. Staying with Open TX as long as I can. Does all I need.

All the OTX developers went to FrSky to build their new operating system for all the new models. This left OTX to waste away.

@@rcrotorfreak It is known that the main developer for OpenTX was hired by FrSky. I doubt some formal thing has ever been announced about it. He helped (and still is) with developing Ethos for FrSky. I moved from OpenTX to Ethos and really enjoying it. It is OpenTX like as far as how powerful it is and how mixers, special functions, etc all work with other added things like predefined mixes to help people setup models easier for simpler things. Easier interface to me too. You are free to use free mixes though that are all powerful if you don't want pre-defined mixes. They seem to have really done a good job on Ethos. You need newer-ish (past couple years) radios from FrSky to use Ethos though.

You should look at the change log for EdgeTX 2.5 - 2.9. It's really not fair to conclude 2 years of EdgeTX development compared to what amounts to zero development on OpenTX results in change for change's sake. EdgeTX has substantially evolved over the same period.

Opentx sucks balls. I can download it, but cant even get through start up options splash screen. It ask stuff i have no clue about, the help button does nothing even after clicking it 1000 times...nothing. i cant find any help on youtube or anywhere. Everyone else just opens it and it runs, not for me
