Chris Barrie is also a bit of a car enthusiast. (Understatement of a lifetime.) Also, I see Butler as sort of Kryten's Ace Rimmer. Haha.

Considering how old the universe is, I doubt the "One intelligent planet" would be Earth. I imagine millions of years ago, he got lucky, and then had nothing but smeg-ups and failures ever since, including us.

I have to agree, Rimmer should have had more of a reaction to the Universe confirming the non-existence of aliens in the show. Even in series four, when they encountered that UFO, he was seriously concerned that aliens would return Glen Miller. "We don't want him! Go away! You took him, you can keep the smegger!"

I've seen clips from that show and the special effects wouldn't look too out of place in the first two seasons of RD. Zaphod's creepy second head 'n' all.

Personally I think Kryten is under appreciated in Red Dwarf, both by the other dwarfers, and by the fans
@rebajoe Жыл бұрын
This reminds me of 'The Inquisitor' where in Krytens case he can't justify his existence cos any good he does is due to programing, yet now here we have Butler who despite not breaking his programming like Kryten did has still done some neat stuff all on his own. So in a way the Inquisitor was a little right in saying Kryten maybe could've been more.

A friend of mine was in the audience for this episode. When Cat says "You talking about me?" following Kryten's rant on how stupid he is, there's a very manly guffaw heard just before the rest of the audience. That's him, hehe. He told me the laugh was in response to Chris Barrie flubbing a line and bringing out his Kenneth Williams impression, a Smeg Up that didn't make it to the DVD, and was edited to be used for Cats entrance instead.

I didn't have to think for a single moment about Earth being the only planet with intelligent life. Wether Rimmer reacts or not, Holly's intros firmly planted the concept that humans are alone. My only question is about the vast proliferation of gelfs and how they themselves have become alien cultures since man went extinct....sorta. Lister is versed in different kinds of gelfs by season 11, and refers to them by type nicknames, like BEGS.

When I watched this episode with my friend we talked about how Butler should have lied about knowing the universe if he wanted to help Kryten. We then remembered that Butler never broke his program and we said "there you go Kryten you're a better liar then Butler."

I wonder what David Ross was doing at the time, missed opportunity not bringing him in as Butler, almost sounds like the guy is trying to do a bit of an impression of the original Kryten as it is. That would be been an amazing bit of meta casting.
@Cyborcat5 жыл бұрын
Good point, that would have been interesting!

When this was made, David Ross was in his 70's and retired. He does pop up in Mechocracy as the voice of 'Talky Toaster' again but that's his only IMDB listing past 2013. I do like the idea of Butler being played by a slightly younger actor [as Dominic Coleman is 14 years younger than Robert Llewellyn] to reinforce the 'Kryten midlife crisis angle but having both Kyrten's in the episode would be fun.

Werent mechanoids series 3000 supposed to look like humans? S6E6: Out of Time: After Lister is knocked out by one of the reality bubbles, taken into sickbay analyzed and identified by Kryten as Series 3000 mechanoid... Rimmer: An earlier model? Then how come he looks so much more sophisticated than you? Kryten: Sir, just because I have a head shaped like a freak formation of mashed potatoes does not mean that I am unsophisticated. Rimmer: Alright then, why does he look more realistically human? Kryten: Humans have always found exact duplicates rather disturbing, sir. The 3000 series was notoriously unpopular. Most of them were recalled. A few slipped the net and went undercover to make new lives in society.

Could there be different versions of the 3000 series, just like there are different versions of the 4000 series? (Mark 3s and Mark 2s were differentiated in Siliconia in series 12). Maybe the human-like 3000 series was an unpopular early prototype, which was written off in favour of the mechanoids we're more familiar with. Butler could be a 3000 series mark 2, whereas Lister was a mark 1.
@FildasKirk4 жыл бұрын
@@bluwusky5167 Well, I believe Lister considers himself as the definitive version :P

Perhaps the 3000 series being human like was part of the reality bubble, and Kryten was unknowingly spouting a false history.
