In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to music from David Gilmour's new album and new tour. His fifth solo album, Luck and Strange, dropped earlier this month. And, his new tour kicks off this coming Friday. I had planned on just listening to Luck and Strange. I ended up also listening to a wonderful four-song medley from a recent rehearsal. The music is soulful and beautiful. David Gilmour is back! I hope you enjoy!

He IS coming to the States, LA end of October, NY early November. For the LA shows there are still plenty of tickets, even below 100 dollars, available. If you have the means and opportunity go see him. If you are on the fence, just go. Quite possibly the last chance. And if you enjoy his music it will be a great experience. He will also be playing some Floyd tunes, (Time, Sorrow, High Hopes, WYWH, CN). Light show looks great as ever. Just go!

This album sounds so good. The production and performances are some of the best I've ever heard, and yes, this includes my beloved Pink Floyd albums. I've found that his previous 2 solo albums sounded over-produced to me (even though I love some of the songs when performed live), but this one sounds phenomenal. Is the song writing as strong as the absolute best of Pink Floyd? It's hard to say with a new album as it's hard to compare new songs to ones you've lived with for so much of your life. But I can tell that some of these tracks will be with me for the rest of my life. Just an amazing record!!

There is a very strange perspective on this album from a lot of people who feel it is flat and lame. I wholeheartedly disagree. Ehst it is, however, is deeply nuanced, from a man who has done so much for music and for his fans. This one is for himself, though. This is he and Polly putting out a very intimate themed album. He is looning back and seeing the gifts he has had. He is looking at the end coming, knowing he doesn't have that much time to live. He is thinking about it, and it has impacted him. I have two assumptions for people who trash this album. First, perhaps they are not old. If they are, perhaps they havejt done their work surrounding age and death. Second, they do not hear the nuances in the music itself, perhaps they are not musically taught or think they are more than they actually are [Dunning Kruger effect]. Perhaps they aren't sitting down and giving it their full attention. Perhaps they are stuck in a cycle of trying to relive the same experiences Pink Floyd gave them so long ago and haven't escaped the cycle. Anyway, it's an absolutely fantastic album.

I admit, having listened, so far, only to Luck and Strange, and only one and a half times, so far (I paused the reaction to go watch the original straight through, then came back, and then paused the reaction again because I was curious about the comments...), I'll say that my perspective (so far) is that this hasn't grabbed me the way most Floyd does. But, I think I might have felt that way at first about Endless River, too, at first, and it grew on me. Perhaps this will, as well. It's clearly rich... it just doesn't (yet) have its hooks into me. I'm curious to see if it'll get there. I'm guessing it might... it's just not, because of that same nuance you speak of, an immediate thing. Even with "full attention", it may just require multiple listens? Or maybe it's just that it's stylistically different in a way that doesn't happen to resonate for me as strongly, and it never will. I don't yet know. But I do expect to give it more chances, probably, and I do kinda _like_ it, I just don't _love_ it, at least not yet.

The world is sadder, bleaker, void of colour, without Rick and without Pink Floyd still active as a collective source of magic. I resent Roger for becoming the person he became. When I first watched the rehearsal I wept like a little baby. "Between Two Points" with Romany's beautiful voice and the lyrics from "Just let them walk all over you (they're right, you're wrong) etc." just hit me in a bad bad way. Credit to Mongolfier brothers for the lyrics of course. Then into "Time" a little later is just a wrecking ball right to the brain. It's probably my favorite song of all time, but in a love/hate way. It hits me so heavily I can barely breathe and just start weeping as if I'd lost someone special - perhaps myself to time. It doesn't even just happen once in a while. It's EVERY time I hear that song that I feel that way. That's how you know it's a good song!

You must check out the other two official music videos from this album. The Piper's Call, and Between Two Points, and Dark and Velvet Nights each have an official video, showing behind the scenes, etc. And my goodness yes, Romany not only looks remarkably like a young David, but she has also inherited some of that musical genius as well. David explains her doing the song in basically one take in this explainer: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nnS0lH6LqcxsocU ( David Gilmour - Between Two Points (Explainer) ) She recently did a set at a local pub with open mic night, and played a few songs, one of which was her original, and then Dad came in and they did a duet of Wish You Were here... And she sings back up on many of the tracks on the new album, plus has done other work with David. They did a beautiful rendition of Yes I have Ghosts during the lockdowns in a set of home moves where she shines: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnjHdphurtVliqs ( David Gilmour with Romany Gilmour - Yes, I Have Ghosts (Von Trapped Series) ) And this one you must see, a photo album of Romany growing up, set to one of David's tunes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipDKgpJ6at6bd6c ( David Gilmour and Romany Gilmour - Kokineli ) Can you imagine having David Gilmour as your dad and music teacher? And she so looks like a young David!

“Between Two Points” is a cover of a 1999 song by The Montgolfier Brothers. David was working on the song at home during the pandemic when everything was in lockdown, and Romany happened to be home from university. She was busy trying to finish a paper as she was going back to school later that day, and David had been pestering her to try a vocal before she left. She finally said, “fine, I’ll sing it one time,” and about 90% of that first take is what’s on the record.

@@KellyDaye I think working with his family so much on it is probably why he feels that way. Romany singing lead vocals on a track, Gabriel writing the lyrics on another, Polly of course. I can imagine how rewarding that must feel at his age. And just today I heard the reworking of Comfortably Numb with Ice-T. It won’t appeal to everyone’s taste, but the old man still has some vigor in him!

There is a video of the two turning up to an open mic session at the local pub. They had acoustic guitars. She asked her dad who’s going to play lead? He said….why not you. She played the opening to Wish you where Here, and it sounded exactly how her father does it.
