Thanks for this review. I will comment now and watch. I don't know what people expect from Gilmour but I think this a really beautiful album . Luck and Strange and Scattered are the two songs that stand out from the first two listens. Floydian melancholy with the light in the dark that his guitar offers. They send shivers during the solos. In reality there are seven songs here with great lyrical content about getting old and the golden years that most of us have experience without wars in the western world at least. After further listening A single spark, the Piper's call, Dark and velvet nights are enjoyable as well as Between two points with Romany, his daughter, on vocals. This is a song written by a duo named Mongolfier Brothers in 1999. The guitar solo elevates it as always. Sings is a song which reminded me of Lost for words from the Division Bell. It is okay. Gilmour's touch is as always impeccable This album is not his best, his first is, but I think it is next in line. 4 out of 5 easily. After many listens and as a Gilmour fan, I am so grateful for this release. Subjectively 5 out of 5.

David Gilmour's solo work is very much his own thing. I think where people get tangled up is thinking and wanting something like dark side of the moon, meddle or the wall albums done again. But that's 40 years ago now and he has moved on and evolved. I personally really like this album it has 3 songs that are brilliant Luck and strange, between 2 points and of course Scattered which in my opinion is one the best songs he has ever written solo, or Floyd with some incredible guitar work. The rest of the tracks are pleasant if not as memorable in my opinion but perfectly fine and happy to listen to again. This for me ultimately is my 3rd favourite solo album he's done with his debut first, on an island second and this third. If you like those 2 albums you are sure to like this one.

Agree and of course, he is 78 years old. I do not understand how and why people expect to hear 1970s Pink Floyd from a 78 year old icon who has clearly moved on. I am mostly impressed with the reinvention at this age.
@pjtheory3 ай бұрын
Terrific review. IMO, this is Gilmour's 2nd best solo album behind only his 1978 self-titled album. This album is a reminder that this 78 year old guitar legend is a fully formed musician whose output (e.g., 14 Pink Floyd albums, 5 solo albums, lead guitar on albums produced by Pete Townsend, Paul McCartney, Brian Ferry, The Orb, etc.) is a study in sustained excellence. In terms of Gilmour's guitar compositions on his solo albums, the Scattered guitar solo is only surpassed by Gilmour's 5 1/2 minute guitar (e.g., Raise My Rent) masterpiece.

First, glad to see the views for this video only two hours in. Thanks for including this album in the new product episodes this week, Pete. Don't have a lot of Gilmour solo work in the personal library but certainly will be giving this one a few full listens. Enjoyed the excerpts heard and listened to a track or two completely but the entire album needs attention. Enjoyed your discussion from the guitar perspective for this album - seemed particularly appropriate considering the daily show this month. Thanks again.

This is my favorite Gilmore album since his first solo album. I am enjoying most of the songs including 'Yes I have ghosts' which seems like a tribute to Leonard Cohen. As some commentators said, he moved on from what he did with Floyd and has now his own style and identity. Let's hope he remains active and keep releasing such gems.

I've never properly checked out Gilmour's solo work but this is sounding pretty good! I liked A Piper's Call immediately. That lyrical guitar section on A Single Spark and the great soloing on Scattered, so distinctive, it could only be David G. Nice to have the imprint of the late Rick Wright on the album as well. Thanks for the review, Pete!

I really dig the album, I think the songwriting is very strong which other David solo albums lacked in my opinion. The lyrics are excellent too and the themes of time running out and mortality are sometimes haunting and emotional. The production gives this record a unique voice in his catalogue and it sounds modern as well as vintage. A triumph

For all the Pink Floyd fans hoping the sale of their recorded catalogue will result in more archival releases, especially live material, sorry to say, but not happening. They officially released the best of what was in the archive with all the box sets they put out in the 2010's. All that's left is the footage of shows on the Wall Tour that were pro shot on both 35mm film and videotape. Waters said years ago he was editing that footage, but then nothing came of it. Probably Gilmour, Mason and the Wright estate voted against releasing that footage. Now it might, finally, happen. A 4K & Blu-ray box set of all the shows in their entirety would be cool. Also, except for the 2 shows recorded by the BBC at Wembley Arena in November '74, which have been officially released, there are no multitrack or soundboard recordings of shows between '73-'77. Mason said all there is of the '77 tour are monitor mix recordings, and those sound awful. If the new ownership is willing to do it, they could do an official bootleg series that releases the best audience recordings from that period, which there are a few. Like: Mike Millard's recording of a 1975 L.A. Forum show, Oakland Colosseum 1977 & Nassau Colosseum 1980. There have been Japanese bootlegs released in recent years of those recordings, that I own, and sound great. But if they were professionally remixed and remastered, they would sound WAY better. Here's hoping!

Very nice record, except for the chorus of the title track which is too much for him his voice has aged quite well. Great guitar parts as always, some of the solos hold up to his glorious Floyd classics. The songwriting is among the best of his solo career, and I in fact feel that the cover song might be the highlight for me. She has a very beautiful voice, I would absolutely love to hear more of them together. The album is much, much better than I expected.

This album has what Rattle that Lock lacked, a sense of flow. Rattle That Lock had good songs on it but it felt a little like patchwork, while this album just feels right. Like most his first album is still my favorite but my favorite moment on any David Gilmour solo album is when Take a Breath starts from On an Island. It literally takes my breath away. Still one of my favorite Gilmour solo songs.🙂This new album will have 3-4 songs which will become favorites for me.
@marksmith78533 ай бұрын
As much as I love David, it's more of my love for his playing and singing. He was the melodic counterpoint for Roger in Pink Floyd. I have no feeling in the great divorce between Roger and David. I love Roger's albums, especially Amused to Death. While I have bought all of Dave's solo albums, I was always a little underwhelmed with the albums as a whole, until On An Island, that became my favorite album of his until this album. This is a complete album with great playing, arrangements, playing, and production. The arrangement on A Single Spark is great, the regular song with verses but no real chorus and electronic drums until the solo, where acoustic drums come in and the solo rides the song out. I love this album because he tries to distance himself from Pink Floyd, but not to the extent that he did on Rattle That Lock, he plays and sings in his own style while Rattle sounds like he was not following his true muse. This is an album I will listen to over and over. Every listen gets better.

I hate to say this, but it's mostly forgettable. It has maybe three good tracks. Romany's track is one of them and if I wanted to buy her music, I would. I don't want it on a David Gilmour album. A lot of the lyrics are really clunky. They sound like they were written to read not sing. No surprise there. David is pushing 80 and it is good considering that.

I really like Gilmour but this one was just OK for me. Only the title track (the Barn Jam) & the opening number grabbed me - "Dark And Velvet Nights" might still grow on me with another couple listens. Overall just too laid back - and 'melancholy'/reflective as usual but that's OK. Gilmour himself says this is his best work since Dark Side...OK🤷♂It's definitely not his playing that's the issue, it's the songs - to me a lot of it just kinda plods along. I did wanna like this MUCH more when it was first announced but just haven't really gotten into it... Other recent new stuff: Connolly Hayes/Remember Me - blues rock Umphrey's McGee/Hall Of Fame: Class Of 2022 - jam The Toms/Rock Paper Scissors - power pop Hippo Campus/Flood - ALT Some 'New' (to me) archival stuff: Dudek Finnigan Krueger Band/DFK - 1980, not bad pop/rock. Great player, Mike Finnigan chips in good vocals & some nice keys. I believe this was it for this group. Best tracks = "It's All About You", "Drinkin' Alone", "You Cut So Deep" Crossection - s/t - 1979 funk Neil Young/Archives Vol. 3 (1976-1987) - newly released mega-box #3 consisting of 17 disks. I already own A LOT of Young material so this for me was deinitely a cherry-picking exercise (but found some nuggets - about a dozen or so/same as Vol 2) Tokyo Rose - punk-ish rock along the lines of Green Day, three good albums The Flaming Sideburns/Sky Pilots - 2003 power pop Thomas Jefferson Kaye - s/t - I had their 2nd one & this is the 1973 debut featuring Rick Derringer. Solid 70's rock Baxter/Dance Of Delight - I think somewhat obscure prog from '74, they have one other album Illustration - s/t - good 1970 rock album with high-quality horns. Think BS&T, Chicago Pidgeon - s/t from '69. Strong psyche Gregg Allman/Uncle Sam's (Recorded Live At Uncle Sam's, Hull, Ma, 7.1.1983) - somehow didn't have this yet... Nice Guy Eddie/Past Modern - 1999 power pop Blues Section - '67 s/t blues/rock Yellow Hand - '69 s/t psyche Sweet Stavin Chain - 1970 s/t blues/rock Tortilla/Little Heroes - '71 psyche Bugsy Maugh/Inside Bugsy - '69 Soul Reality - 1972 s/t funk Goodness And Mercy - also early 70's (1970) funk. I'd call this one a 'lost classic' - really strong album with GREAT horns The Bob Meighan Band/The Dancer - solid '76 rock Joey Gregorash/North Country Funk - really good 1971 Canadian rock
