In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, we're going back to another DJ Dan (Guest DJ) selection. I'm listening to the studio recording of The Grudge by Tool from their 2001 album Lateralus. As with many other of this band's songs, I found this song to be primal, hard hitting, powerful, and unwavering. Tool is such a unique band! Come along for the ride...

agreed, and to me it's the drums and guitars sort of taking opposite roles than what's normal. The drums are a main focal point and they're busy and complex, while the guitars play simple stuff around them. And the way the holes are filled is genius.

Yes. For anyone analyzing this song this is pretty obvious. The part I need help on understanding is the Saturn one and ten stuff.
@andyb2977
@andyb2977 3 жыл бұрын
@@SpaklesDr the Saturn thing seems to be related to astrology. Saturn has a period of 29.5 years, and in astrology, Saturn returning to the place where it was at the time of your birth marks a transformation in your life, one where you let go of your past and embrace your future. The first Saturn Ascension is the end of youth and the beginning of adulthood, and the second Saturn Ascension is the beginning of old age. So my interpretation is that of letting go of a youthful grudge to embrace a new era of one's life free from it. As far as the one in ten, it seems to be a reference to the ten sephirot of the tree of life in Kabbalah. But I couldn't tell you much more than that because I hardly understand it.

@@SpaklesDr For some reason I thought the grudge was a reference to Galileo vs the Catholic church over Earth not being the center of the universe. I think he also discovered Saturn? If I'm incorrect it's still fun to think about while listening to the song. Science vs religion is always angsty and churning.
@queengoblin
@queengoblin 3 жыл бұрын
@@SpaklesDr Saturn returns are notorious in astrology for bringing up a lot of shit from our past and forcing us to face the reality of where we are and how our current path will impact our future. Saturn is the planet of reality, control, definition, confinement, (as we see lyrically) and hard truths. Every 28 years Saturn "comes back around" (hits the same point it was at at the time of our birth) to show us what we have to let go of. We can reject that and suffer; and be dragged down like a stone, or we can accept it and let go, and be lifted up and reuinted with our birth selves (inner child). If you watch people's lives closely, you see that people tend to "face reality" around 28-30, and again around 60 and 90. These are times in our lives when hard reality becomes impossible not to face (or hard to escape from). At 30 you have to face the reality that you're an adult and have to choose a concrete direction for your life after the decadence and aimless narcissism of your 20s (typically). At 60 you have to look back on your life and see if you are proud of what you have accomplished. At 90 you must face that you are going to die soon and see the impact of the legacy you left behind - or didn't. I'm being very general but you get the basic idea.

@@SpaklesDr Saturn defeating his father Caelus and turning the grudge he held to his father into his own STONE to bear, devouring his children so as to prevent a repeat of his ASCENT to power. Ops (his wife, goddess of fertility) hid their 6th child, Jupiter, from Saturn and offered him a stone instead. Upon passing the stone he passed the children (SPITS YOU OUT LIKE A CHILD) he had previously consumed. Jupiter ultimately defeated Saturn. Once defeated Saturn fled and lived a peaceful life and became the god of agriculture.... in summary... I think this is some 4d chess philosophy showing that it doesn't really matter the source rather the meaning. Which is a very Maynard thing to do.

Saw this tour also, right after 9/11 in NYC, police cars surrounding Madison Square Garden, the city trying to get back on it's feet, it was surreal. My friend bought the tickets and asked me to go. Literal goosebumps watching you experience this one for the first time. This was actually the first Tool song I ever heard, it didn't click at first. I didn't honestly really think I'd like Tool when I began listening to this. The friend who lent me the CD Lateralus said "keep listening over and over until you get it." After about 8 listens, I started the CD with this song for the 9th time, and suddenly, like an awakening, I had the "OH MY GOD" moment and never looked back...I got it finally. Hearing this song the first time was a visceral experience for me. I knew Tool for many years prior to this (I had Undertow and Aenima) and I bought Lateralus as soon as it came out. I could've skipped straight to Schism as it was the only track I knew since it was already released as a single. But this was the days of CD and I liked to have the first listen of my new albums go all the way through so I don't miss anything good. Hearing the sound of the electrical motor starting was a hint of the relentless machine that was to follow. It was so easy to get lost in the raw power and throbbing rhythm, and by the end of the song I was sitting mouth agape, astonished at what I have heard. The Grudge was immediately my favorite song and has remained so for 20 years.

The problem is that a grudge is only in your head The "aggressor" most of the time isn't even aware of it so you're really just suffering alone. Here in Sao Paulo we say that if you hold a grudge for too long, is the same of building an apartment for the other person inside your head, they're "living there", in your head, for free and you could fill it with something way better.

The level of experience and knowledge, and comfort in complexity, for you to be able to speak to this like without pausing or jumping back. Then to add in the interpretation of the lyrics in real time. Wow, seriously impressive.

I went through a terrible experience with a friend starting in May, and this song has been profound. It was a very difficult experience for me, which makes the words and music here really powerful and even cathartic. It's the best music can be.

Saw them live in Denver this year. I discovered them by accident while on acid one night. I listened to all their albums in a row and have not been the same.

I’ll never forget when I first bought this CD, many years ago. I remember putting it in the stereo when I got home and turned up the giant volume dial. This is the first song on the album. Still gets me every time

I don't think we'll ever get another Tool. I've never heard more musical talent. Unbelievable. CSB - I was at the Tabernacle in ATL when this video was released. We spent around 4 hours outside due to counterfeit tickets being sold. Maynard came out on stage at 11:30ish (the concert was at 7:30) and said 'Where have you all been?' Best Tool show I've seen.

A lot of what comes off as "clean" guitar is actually the bass. A lot of interchanging of pitch territory /interweaving of role-play between guitar and bass in Tool. Part of what makes them so interesting and unique.

I can't pick a favorite Tool song, there are too many to choose from, but this is a fave for sure. Doug, I love watching your vids, I am not musical at all and I love knowing what note and key things are in. And your reactions to some of my favorites are priceless.

My brother was very hurtful to me earlier this year. Said some things I struggled to forgive. Made some threats I never thought I could let go. I keep wanting to forgive, regardless of whether we ever speak again, but it's so hard. I think it's time to let go. We may never be the same again but I'm tired of carrying this weight in my heart. I let it drag me down until I could barely walk.

The reason a lot of their songs are in D is pretty simple: they tune the guitar to Dropped D. Many guitar based music is often based or at least influenced by the tuning of the guitars. Many metal bands had a lot of songs in E minor, for the simple reason it's the lowest note and is so easy to implement in riffs. Or it's just a derivative for example half step lower (Eb minor), whole step lower (D minor), 1 1/2 step (C#) etc. or this is done in a dropped tuning (standard tuning -> dropped D, half step down -> dropped C# etc. etc.). Also a lot of newer metal is played on 7 or even 8 string guitars. In standard tuning a 7 string has an extra low B string and an 8 string a F# on top of that. Either that's tuned down or with a dropped tuning (I for example have my 7 string in a dropped A tuning and my 8 string in dropped E). When I play a song in a guitar tuned 1/2 step down, and play a song sounding in Ebm, I would still think of it as in Em, or with a 1/2 step down dropped C#, I wouldn't think of it as a song in C# but in D. Main reason for metalbands to tune guitar down is because it's considered sounding heavier. Another reason to tune down is because of the vocalist. I think that's the reason Neal Morse plays everything 1/2 step down, so it fits his baritone voice better.

I believe that, in general, rhythmic possibilities have been underappreciated in music, in favor of melodies, harmony, ... Tool and Meshuggah, specially Meshuggah, are 2 good examples of bands that extract and use this rhythmic essence to propel their music forward, and it is refreshing. In fact, Meshuggah's amazing singer, Jens, uses basically one note toward almost any song, but he uses this rhythm intrinsic nature of music to "do his job", as the rest of the band does.

When maynard says to use their music as a "tool", this kind of piece comes to my mind. Te grudge, and honesly all of lateralus, is absolutely therapeutic and it KEEPS helping me through the years. Tool is kind of like a mantra sometimes, you go back to it and it heals you.

I remember listening to this album, in its entirety, on its release date. Alone in my room, I turned it up and felt everything. It’s not an exaggeration to say it changed me. This song spoke to a life of resentment. It spoke directly to me. It’s unfortunate that you never get that guttoral response again. I love watching these videos now. Unfortunately, I’ve grown used to how amazing Tool is. These response videos allow me to re-live a little of my initial response. I still need to change.

Lyrically the track on the surface is pointed and direct but the esoteric meaning of the track is based in alchemy (transmutation lead to gold, water = emotion, philosophers stone etc) the track also has astrological principles regarding Saturn 🪐 return, this is the planet that teaches lessons and disciplines.
