According to several interviews with Diana & her vocal coach, During this contest, she was going thru puberty & lost several note levels. They had to adjust the music for her. Since this period, she has regained the lost and increased her range to three octaves.

Apparently, Rechenka demands a Very high emotional investment/cost from Maestra Dee- anna. So much so, that she has been reluctant to perform what many consider her Iconic Signature song in a Full Length Solo Concert setting. For a period of Many many months virtually retiring this intimately personal song from her active performance repertoire, unless strongly requested by her audience.

Thank you for this analysis. Diana is always evolving in her singing. But you should listen and experience her rendition of Rechenka (a version of an ancient Russian folk song), in this same show. Nothing to do with any "shock factor" theories. This is her natural low tessitura. She has various other songs with a much lighter and airier tone which are just as great.

@@BrettHondow exactly... she can choose which way she wants to sing. I’ve seen her videos where she never uses her super low tone. But it’s her low tone videos that get reacted to in huge numbers and get her the most visibility. So I still stand by that among the tones she could sing in there has been a conscious effort by her and her producer to heavily incorporate her lower registry because it shocks people and helps her stand out in a crowded world. None of that detracts from the fact that she’s an amazing singer and performer.

@@BrettHondow Brett, I agree with you. Diana said as she was growing up, her voice got lower. She said she then had to practice harder at the higher range. She also said Human was easy for her to sing and was her favorite. So when she sings at her natural low range, it's was not done to "shock" people. When she sang Take On Me in her apartment, at the end of the song, she sang high and sustained the note as long as possible. But in later performances, she would sing the same song and at the end go high but then drop lower. Also in almost all of her other songs (to the best of my knowledge), she has never sustained the last note as long as possible (in Oh Darling she did). Why not? With her talent, she would do this to "shock" people. Singing at a lower range is easier for her because that's her natural voice. Singing higher is harder for her. To say that Diana would sing at a lower range to shock people and differentiate herself from other singers would be an insult to her. She sings at the lower range because "that is her natural voice." And as she gets older and her vocal chords mature, she will find it harder to sing at the higher range. She will do it because she's a professional, but it won't be easy on her voice. How about Cher, Tina Turner, Shakira and others, do they sing at a lower range to shock people? So Brett, you are absolutely right.

Hi Doug. Diana does all her own arrangements and interpretations. Other opera singers who have reacted to her say that she is a dramatic contralto who is also polyphonic and capable of uncommon larynx manipulations. Loreena McKennitt has been my favorite female vocalist for the past 15 years. But now, Diana is my favorite. Her tone quality and passion and intensity give me goosebumps. She is almost 18 now and she is improving and getting stronger almost on a daily basis (I've been following her progress).

Great reaction! She was 15 when she sang Wicked Game. If you like her stage presence and that tribal sound you should listen to Rechenka (The River) which she sang at 14. It is based on a Russian folksong about a young betrothed orphan girl who goes to the river, the boundary between the living and the dead, to ask her deceased mother's blessing for her marriage. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2HWnZx-qM94qJY Ironically, Diana herself was an orphan who was abused and abandoned by her alcoholic mother. I saw a Q&A from her voice teacher (now died sadly) who said Diana could have successfully trained for the opera but chose not to as she wanted greater artistic freedom than the singers received there. Both of these were composed by a well-known Russian/Ukrainian composer Igor Krutoy specifically for Dimash’s voice. He has got a classical training and was offered a position in Astana Opera but he refused. Also, he has got a master’s degree in jazz and contemporary music.
