Better way to do this is by exploring when you hogtie kieran. Instead of returning to the camp, you can freely explore the north of ambarino. You can even explore the mines without failing, and go as far East as the inbred family that grows ginseng.

Can you explore not during missions and before you start them?

In Chapter 1 you cannot explore outside of missions. The game will flat out kill you if you leave camp. After Chapter 1, you can explore freely.
