It's kind of ironic that the hand drawn film Prince of Egypt actually beated the CGI film Antz at the time, when it is rare to see a hand drawn film beat a 3d film at the box office, especially nowadays.

My biggest issue with "A Bugs Life" is that I find a lot of the characters outside of Flik, Dot and the Circus Bugs hard to side with when it comes to their plight. Outside of Dot, it's hard to root or feel bad for the ant colony getting bullied by the grasshoppers when all they ever seem to do is give Flik a rough time, just for being a Bungling Inventor. They also prove themselves to be hypocrites. They all celebrate behind Flik's back for finally being rid of him when he departs to search for warrior bugs. But when the jig is up that he accidentally brought back circus bugs, Princess Atta and the colony have no issue banishing Flik for lying to them, even though they lied to him first to make him leave. There's also the issue of Flik being the only one to stand up to Hopper when he threatens to feed Dot to Thumper, when none of the other ants seemed to bother doing anything to protect her, causing Flik to only get more flak for indirectly causing Hopper to order the food rations doubled, when Dot probably would have been killed otherwise nobody even bothers to bring this up in Fliks defense and seems to only exist to caused more drama against him. There's also the fact that it follows the liar revealed storyline. I agree that the Circus Bug crew really make the movie, they are easily the best part of the film.

Holy shit - I never noticed the hypocrisy on the Council's part! I mean, I knew they lied to Flik when actually watching the scene, but for some reason I never put it together that it goes against them bashing on *him* for lying. But yeah - it's like "Little Yellow Book" before _SpongeBob_ even came into fruition.

@@TGWTGCensored I wouldn't go that far, but nonetheless it's pretty unnerving. I really dislike the "One Sided against the Protagonist" trope and this movie has shades of it that follows in the same footsteps as the liar revealed trope. The hypocrisy of Atta and the council make it hard to root for them when their reasoning for lying to Flik was tied into personal gain (AKA they took advantage of Flik wanting to find help simply so they can rid their inconvenience of him) yet when Flik gets caught in his lie (a lie he had no choice but to keep so that the entire colony would still have a reason to fight back and be happy. I mean Flik's lie did cause them to all get along and be happy together) they all decide to banish him on the spot simply for lying to them. It also doesn't help that their decision leading to trying to get rid of him the first time was tied to Flik accidentally causing Hooper to make them double the amount of food rations, even though Flik only did it unintentionally to save Dot's life, which is never considered on his behalf.

@@Surgemaster2012 *_sigh..._* Damn, this movie a lot more mean-spirited than I remembered! But still, I remember siding more with Flik as a kid, probably because I myself was kind of a loner at school, always hanging out by myself and indulging myself in books and computer games - ironically, though, I was more like an anti-Flik, in that the kids at school actually really liked me for being smart, and that I actually preferred solitude because of my introversion. It is funny, though, to think that _Mulan_ did the "one-sided against the protagonist" trope a lot better than _A Bug's Life_ - within the same year, no less! Part of that, though, is probably because Mulan was discriminated against because of her gender, being in ancient China and all that (in fact, even modern China isn't exactly kind to women), so it's not like anyone (except Chifu) held anything against her as a person. (Not that men don't face gender discrimination also, but Flik clearly didn't, at least not overtly.) And probably also because Mulan seemed more like a real person - while she was sort of the same "awkward, nerdy hero" archetype as Flik, her character was expanded on a bit more, in that she *wanted* to fit in with society but just couldn't, she cared strongly about her father, and... she's just a more relatable character overall, whereas Flik is more of a generic nice guy who wanted to do good.

@@TGWTGCensored The ending was at least good and it's a harmless film at best, but it's certainly one of Pixar's weakest. I don't mind the film at all aside from that one aspect. Well that and the forced romance between Flik and Atta.

Pieguy, have you seen the film Eighth Grade? It's a film about a girl's last week of eight grade and it also goes for that realistic depiction of young adolescence during that time of their life as they are growing up and the way social media plays heavily into the lives of young teenagers like Instagram and KZbin with the girl making videos about things she has learned and giving advice to her viewers such as putting yourself out there, etc. The show you talked about reminded me a bit of the movie when you mentioned "realistic depiction of teenage life and influence of social media." I was a middle schooler from 2008-2011 and with coming of age stories and nostalgia being a thing such as that film I mentioned taking place in the late 2010s and shows like Stranger Things in the 1980s, I would love to see a coming of age story taking place in the late 2000s (like 2007-2009). As a young adolescent growing up at a time where social media was a thing but not as big as it is now, KZbin in its infancy, Facebook phasing in while MySpace beginning to phase out, YA starting to coming in with stuff like Twilight, smartphones/iPhones starting to coming in, I would so be able to relate with that and I think it would be cool to see a story taking place at that time. Ahh the Antz vs. Bug's Life controversy. Honestly for me, I'm more into A Bug's Life and it could be a bias since I grew up with this film as a very young child back in the day and I would watch the shit out of my VHS of the film. Antz, I first watched it when I was 10 and I was actually bored by it. Then I rewatched it again all the way through with my ex-boyfriend during my freshman year of college and it actually was a bit better than I remembered it being, but I prefer the Pixar classic.

Really good episode, only thing I would be curious to ask, and I haven't seen Antz, is that do you think that the movie trying to be more serious or even "edgy" was more welcome in 1998 when this wasn't as common(stuff like South Park was still very new) and people were used to Disney?
