I always defended the original version of this scene, as in the context of being the first lightsaber duel seen, coming after the setup in the cantina of one strike lethality, and Obiwan and Vader being masters, I believed measured dueling was effective and correct. After seeing this video, I believe this is what the choreographer intended and it's quite a revelation

Thank you! And yep, that was my goal. Not to so much speed up the fight to match the prequels or a modern movie sensibility, but to give an idea of what the stunt coordinator Peter Diamond originally intended the fight to be. Diamond didn't intentionally choreograph it to be slow. After all, if one looks at classic swashbuckling movies like The Mark of Zorro or Robin Hood, the sword fighting choreography is actually very fast and would match or even exceed many modern movies today. The duel in A New Hope was slowed down only to accommodate the prop blades - made of a thin layer of wood and wrapped in reflective material to simulate the lightsaber glow - being so delicate and subject to breaking apart as the behind the scenes footage shows. That's why he said "I had to teach them [if they were to clash], to stop before [the blade] touched." Alec Guinness and David Prowse also had to wear a wire up their sleeves that was attached to their lightsaber prop and a battery pack hidden under their costumes so that the blades would rotate to simulate the reflective material glow and that also hindered their mobility, too (you can see the wire up Obi-Wan's sleeve actually, if you pause around 2:03). Which is one of the reasons why in Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, they gave up trying to achieve the lightsaber glow in-camera and just used carbon fiber sticks so the actors could hit against each other without worrying about breaking the blades. And why those fights are much more intense than the one in A New Hope.

Agreed. What bothers me about the prequel fights is how no one ever gets tired and there is so much excess movement. There are so many times a jedi will spin and invite a stab in the back, or pointlessly swing his lightsaber around in a way that does nothing to attack and leaves him wide open to be impaled. The fights in the original trilogy are more grounded, with an emotional undercurrent due to the relationship of the characters.

I honestly thought this was going to be one of those fan edits that made it schlockier with a bunch of back flips, spins, etc. but this pretty great and apparent that you have a firm understanding of the emotional weight of the scene.

100% agreed. Everyone loves that fan edit and as I was sitting there watching it I was just like... Why? The choreography is way too over the top and the cinematography of it is just bad, or at the very least doesn't fit with the vibe of the movies at all. It looks like some dude was trying to shoot some modern blockbuster action movie and that's not what Star Wars is at all. People are allowed to like what they like but the only people who I feel like view that edit as superior in any way think of Star Wars as "Lightsaber Duels: With Some Story In There"

I was thinking the same thing about when Obi Wan's lightsaber appears. It's the oldest camera trick in the book, but when they do the edit to him holding the lit saber, it's just a tiny bit different position. That's fixable, I could probably figure that out. Or the black levels with the Rancor's green screen work or a dozen other tiny things.

Thanks for the compliment. One of my favorite things about lightsaber duels is the sound editing and effects done by Ben Burtt. He really makes the lightsaber clashes sound almost ‘musical’. Every hit sounds appropriate like a song almost. I think a lot of fan edits of this duel are great, but they don’t take the ‘musical lightsabers’ into account when they enhance the sound edit. What I did differently is I left the original sound effects of the fight in and simply enhanced them, but still kept the musical “order” of them intact. So if a clash sounded vaguely like a C note, I copied it with the new mix.

I was skeptical at first because I didn't understand what you were trying to do, but after watching it, I'm really impressed. What you've done is that you've captured the essence - I believe - of kendo, that is, of simplicity of movement with deadliest of strikes. That's essentially what mastering swordsmanship is about, the elimination of unnecessary movement and keeping only the essence. And the essence of swordsmanship is defense and attack. More inexperienced people are more attracted to flashy movements because it looks stronger, but in reality, the masters simple movements feel stronger.

This is the best edit of the original Vader vs. Obi Wan fight I have ever seen. It maintains the original choreography, the emotional weight, and the build-up to the climax. All that was done was change some of the sound effects, edit some parts to make it faster, and make it so the blades really felt like they hit hard despite it being so simple. The lack of music until the scene's climax is still maintained, too. If Disney ever decides to do another "special edition," I'd welcome a change like this.

I stand by that the refilmed fight that a team did was the best reimagining of the fight. BUT, of all the edits of the og fight using og footage I've seen. This one absolutely steals first place. They didn't just speed it up like others have done. It actually looks like they reduced the frames to make it still the same frame rate as the rest of the footage, but feels faster that way. Which feels way more consistent than just making the footage sped up slightly. They also went further and looked like they rearranged clips to slightly alter the order of choreography. That plus the new effects and sounds make it all feel a bit more aggressive. Well done.

Scene 38 Reimagined is fun, but I actually preferred this edit to it. Reimagined tries to bring the fight to a modern level that doesn’t match anything else in the film, let alone the whole trilogy. Meanwhile, this edit strives to make the duel feel equal to its peers in Empire and Jedi. In terms of putting artistic intent over theatricality, this definitely wins.
@CritStanley
@CritStanley 5 ай бұрын
@@rpvee that is a very fair assessment. One of my critiques of the reimagined scene is how the cinematography is not the same style of ep 4 at large. The use of ep3 music as well breaks from it. But I do think the choreography was on par with and didn’t overstep ep5 and ep 6.
@rpvee

@@CritStanley Yeah, the choreography wasn’t an issue with Reimagined. I actually quite like how well it captured the rage Vader would be feeling facing his old master once again. I meant it was more the general aesthetic, such as the cinematography and the music as you mentioned, that didn’t fit the rest of the movie. I definitely enjoy Reimagined for what it is, but I really appreciate it how this edit stayed true to the aesthetic of the film the scene is a part of.

I'm actually surprised that when filming Empire Strikes Back, Lucas didn't recreate the Death Star corridor and have Alec Guinness and David Prowse or Bob Anderson reshoot the lightsaber duel with the better props. I don't think fans would have minded that. It just looks so bad now compared to all the lightsaber stunts and moves we see in the prequels and even Rogue One. I know now that maybe Vader was being cautious in case Obi-wan was feigning being a tired old man, but the duel just looks so out of place against all other duels in the saga.

Wow! Great job on editing this already iconic duel, I really appreciate how you stuck to the original spirit of the fight without going over the top. I really liked SC38 Reimagined, but I think this version of the fight is the perfect balance of modern editing without some of the unnecessary shenanigans that other creators have put into this fight. I think it would be awesome if this made it into the fan-made "Original Trilogy - The Final Cut", because it has definitely earned its place!

Without having to completely remake the scene like that CG animation from a few years ago, this is AMAZING!

Excellent work on this, the sped up footage is noticeable in a few places but overall it's a much more exciting and tense fight the way you edited it

Ah, very nice job I always thought part of what Vader vs Obi was too "meh" is how slow they felt and the camera barely showing the lightsaber. Now, with this edit that's solved and they feel a lot more faster and dynamic, like Ahsoka vs Vader

A great edit, especially cause it makes sense within the story. After getting defeated twice (plus he had him on a plate and let him go out of pride), Vader knows it's his moment of retribution against Obi-Wan and he doesn't let his anger play a part this time. Every strike looks deadly and is meant to be. Obi-Wan has aged and can't let it go on for too long, Vader fears another surprise and wants to beat his master quickly. But then again, little does he know that Obi-Wan's got the ultimate ace up his sleeve: becoming immortal. Thanks a lot, truly an amazing edit and proof that sometimes less is more.

Everyone in the comments here talking shit about the SC 38 reimagined version. That was a fun project that clearly wasn't meant to actually fit the movie. There wasn't even an attempt. Stupid criticism. This edit right here does and it's fantastic also. I could actually see this being a actual part of the movie.

For the record, personally, I have nothing but respect and admiration for the makers of SC 38 REIMAGINED. As a fellow Star Wars fan, I thought their video was great. My goal with this re-edit was to update a video I had done way back in March 2008 called "Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Darth Vader - Lightsaber Duel (More Intense)" (Which, for anyone curious, can be seen here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5esaquZj66fbpI&ab_channel=A.B.Director ). I did relatively the same thing as this edit, but it wasn't as polished. I had to remove it back in 2012 when Disney cracked down hard on copyrighted material after buying Lucasfilm and started striking channels with any Star Wars stuff (many fan edits, music videos, etc. I had made suffered from it). But it was a fun idea and I wanted to revisit the concept.

You’re spot on. This edit is more appropriate for the movie, but Sc 38 reimagined is more of a love letter to the prequels

Really well done. My only complaints are that the lightsaber sound effects are mixed too loudly over the dialogue and that it's a little bit too fast and jumpy with some of the cuts but I'd still say it's an improvement and especially impressive given the limitations.

There was always a good fight hiding in what was filmed and presented. As good a concept as Scene 38 was, this is more organic, it feels tighter and, more importantly, it retains Alec Guinness' performance as Obi-Wan Kenobi and is no longer a million miles away from Ewan McGregor's younger version.
