I know this video is pretty old at this point, but I'd love to know more about what you've got going on for setup (stance angles, board waist width, scr... all that stuff). Just picked up some rando alpine equipment to try it out up here on Hood and presuming I like it I'll probaly dive more into it. Your board definitely looks wider than the average alpine board that I've seen, which may be a good fit since it probably means you won't boot out with normal angles (50-45 degrees). Anyways, interested to know more!

Thanks Ryan for the video and for the fact that again in the frame was a good example of quality carving. I think you need to try stiffer boots than Deluxe - this brand is not good. If you feel tired, so shoes are not good enough to resist bending in the lower leg. The boots should be reliable fixation of the upper part of the Shin, for this I suggest to use boosters. Look for the UPZ boots. Or sports model Delux - Indy. Well, the Board would be a little longer - 178mm. would be it. What would the arcs in the corners was a little longer. Good luck in all your endeavors.

I have the very same deeluxe boots and they're awesome! Since I've got them I've been going twice as hard with my 10 year old Silberpfeil. "If you feel tired, so shoes are not good enough" Are you saying it's unnatural to get tired of, like, one of the most intense quads excercises ever? Your legs have to endure great forces when doing steep turns, imagine how your legs would feel if they're not used to this kind of movement.

Hey Ryan! Good riding. You shold try classical hardboot bindings like f2 race titanium instead of intec ones. They much more comfortable and have much more lateral flex.

How much harder on the knees is Alpine Boarding compared to normal Snowboarding? I am a Monoskier and Alpine Boarding interests me enough to give it a go.

Alpine Stance Angles: Did you feel the ability to open up your hips more and consequently look over the (left) shoulder more easily on a heel-side carve? Did you experience any difference in being able to "lunge" down in a forward position instead of "squatting" down to get lower on the board? Would you say the ++ stance removes the need for any bending at the waist? I'm asking this for comparison with a surf stance, because in surfing they teach you duck stance will lead to poo-man stance and limit your surfing. The bio-mechanical advantages seem to be the same for snowboarding, I guess the only reason to ride duck stance is really the ability to ride switch... Any thoughts?

Yup that is standard (albeit advanced) alpine technique for driving acceleration out of the end of the turn. Watch how high the noses of the Olympic racer's boards go in the Korean Olympics!

Ryan you are really fun even if sometimes I talk a little too much ;-)! Sorry if I put "I don't like it" but the alpine snowboard is not this ... the board you use is a boardercross for example. Try watching a video of roland fischnaller or sigi grabner ... they definitely have another technical level. To learn snowboard hard well you need to learn to carve around the poles with specific boards in both disciplines: special slalom and giant slalom. THAT IS TRUE ALPINE SNOWBOARD!!!

Check out forums.bomberonline.com/forum/4-carving-central/ as a place to start getting some info on alpine. Depending on where you’re located someone might be able to steer you towards demo equipment and possibly a riding partner for a day. Riding with another alpine rider for a day would be worth a year’s flailing around by yourself.

Hey Ryan, i am going to snowboard tomorrow, i have in mind to try something, which is when transitioning from side to side while turning, to delay the carve and start pushing the snowboard while still going flat into the turn early before the carve. Does this help with buttering tricks? Better than initiate a buttering trick while on edge? If you do snow kiting you would dream of windy days like this one :D

Hi Ryan, I have been trying out your tips on carving, and they work damn well! I'm running a goofy racecar softboot setup with super forward angles at 36 and 21 degrees for front and rear feet respectively. How much is the difference in feel between an alpine setup and normal soft boot setup? As well, what is the price difference?

I have friends who ride alpine... it's very different in feel and technique. It's also more expensive; alpine equipment generally costs similar to mid-range ski gear

Yup as QFT mentioned, it's more expensive generally for the all the equipment. I'm by no means an expert so I unfortunately don't have much advice on this topic. For me it feels way different, but that's also cuz I'm soooo use to how a freestyle board rides...

Does this stance feel bad on your knees at all in any positions or during any movements? I cranked my bindings forward on my regular board this season (did something like +30/+18 - really wanted to try carving without my size 11.5 boots overhanging) and found that it affects my knees in a very unpleasant way - got them sore after just 2 or 3 runs. The run had a few steep portions where I had to skid, so perhaps this is where it got uncomfortable, but I'm not sure.

positive stance has been around since forever, if your knees are hurting, first I'd suggest get the angles to have ~3-6 degrees difference, maybe 24/18 or or 24/21, then look at where you hips are facing, it is called the 'norm', facing where your bindings face.

Hey Ryan, I'm a solid all-mountain snowboarder, I'll eventually buy an alpine setup, but I would like to learn to carve and ride switch on a board. I'm thinking of looking for a size wide (I'm a 9.5 boot size), pretty stiff board - do you think that'll be good enough for me to get into some switch and carving type stuff? Or should I be approaching this differently?

For carving deeper (with low stance angles), I'd for sure try some wide boards. Even if you can find an older model for cheap on Craigslist or something that can be a decent place to start. As for alpine gear, obviously a whole different game and I don't have suggestions other than to say for myself, this prototype that's a bit wider which allows me to use a bit less extreme angles helped me... When I've gotten on full blown 'elite level race boards' like the Donek Rev and Proteus, I was awful on em cuz the change in stance angles was so much... But with enough time, alot of people love both those models. Best luck and happy shredding!

I have my boots set on a +20 degree front foot and a 0 on the back to far on a + angle on the back does not feel stable i ride facing mostly down the hill. any one know if this would carry over a bit to a racing board

Very good carves after day one! I'm using alpine too with hard boots, and remember when I changed the equipment on the top of the mountain with my friend's soft equipment he wasn't able to reach the bottom of the hill with the hard boots :D The soft equipment was also uncomfortable for me - much less reaction - but I was able to ride on it. I have never again tried soft bindings, now I'm starting to teach my children snowboarding and I bought them soft ones, maybe I'll try it out again after 20 years. Also I'm still using a 20 years old 165cm Oxygen APX board (but it feels great, don't know if modern boards can give me more fun): www.konsument.at/freizeit-familie/snowboards-306?pn=4&showAll=y

modern boards offer a magic mix of carbon and titanal. 20 year old boards are likely good for making a fancy fence
