Many people love the production and mix on Nirvana's In Utero. Kurt Cobain was attempting a more raw and real sound. I have never enjoyed it and am curious if I can improve it, so I remixed Heart Shaped Box. Did you like it? Let me know in the comments, and check out the other links in the description!

You sort of alluded to it when you described the original mix as “pansy” hard rock but part of why people love the En Utero sound is that a lot of the songs on the album including Heart Shaped Box are about being insecure and vulnerable. So the “pansy” sound kind of adds to that feeling.

These kinds of videos perfectly showcase what a negative effect modern technology has on some aspects of music. Nowadays everybody tries to get their perfect tone in isolation. Then they press the play button and are incredibly surprised the sounds somewhat clash, making it sound artifical. People back then played together and found their tones together as well. That's why it sounds great because the tones complement each other instead of just adding up more and more layers of the same.

If your writing music by getting isolated tones on their own instead of for a whole mix then your already doing amateur moves. Plenty of old bands have a shite sound because theyre tones didnt sound good together no matter how much they jammed sounds out. Knowing how mixes and composition work is not a generational thing and making claims like that is boomer af which tbf i expect in a nirvana comment section

I've always been a fan of Steve Albini's engineering methods. He's usually very rhythm-heavy, which I totally appreciate. It can be too dry for some people. I'd actually like to know what you think of his work on The Pixies' Surfer Rosa, which is a prime example of Albini's work.

The mix that ended up being on the album was done by Scott Litt. This has been contested as to why this came about, whether it was Geffen's insistence (as this was planned to be the lead single) or the band's having second thoughts about how it was initially mixed. One thing that was taken out here was what Albini called an "abortion guitar" for that short solo between the second chorus and third verse, which I admit was for the best. Even Steve would later not particularly like it =] (By the way, Scott also did "All Apologies", which ended up on the initial album release. He also did "Pennyroyal Tea", but I think it was available through the Wal-Mart-issued version initially. The reissue for the anniversary brings together everything for posterity.). To reiterate why I may have said initially, I like that sound, for better or for worse. Albini and the surviving members revisited the album ten years ago. You can think of it as everyone is now twenty years older (at the time) and thus have a better idea of how to do things perhaps. I think it's a tasteful polish without losing a lot of what made the album appealing in the first place. This may be more to your liking. But then again, you just did your own remix to your own taste.

I personally don't like the 2013 mix and interestingly enough I think the best mixed song of that record is the Scott Litt Pennyroyal Tea mix (the single mix which I assume is the same as the Walmart one) while I don't like what Scott did to Heart Shaped Box.
@hackapump

I thought it was established fact that it was the band, and more specifically Kurt, who had second thoughts about the Albini album mix. (Albini himself says he was fine with it for that exact reason, that it wasn't a label takeover). It seems it was largely an ideological thing to begin with, rather than an aesthetic one: Kurt was disturbed by the sell-out criticism from the punk movement he so loved and identified with. Then, when push came to shove, he realised he didn’t like some of the mixes, and so they hired Scott Litt to remix a few of them. (Litt had the desired credibility, after producing REM and The Replacements). Personally I think it’s unfair to Andy Wallace, (who mixed Nevermind). He produced and mixed one of the best sounding albums of the 90s, Jeff Buckley’s Grace. And I don’t hear anyone complain about that. Purists, of any kind, make me fall asleep. It’s like religion, and religion has no business meddling with the creative process.

@@modelcitizen1977 Well, the album did pretty well, so I’d say most people had no issues with it. ;) It’s arguably THE seminal album of the 90s. And it remains a beloved reference for producers and audio engineers - (Andy Wallace’s work usually is). But you know how purists are: Few but loud. A contingency of the band’s original fans, who loved the debut album, cried ”sellouts”. And that bothered the sensitive frontman enormously. Producer Butch Vig used a combination of gentle prodding and benign lies to get Kurt to overdub his vocals and guitars. Telling him for example that ”John Lennon always doubled his vocals”, which is true. Or that he needed a take with a different guitar amp, which wasn’t necessarily true. A good producer has people skills, to discern what an artist needs, and how to get there. And it’s not like Kurt resented it. They were happy with the album, as well as the success it brought. Until they weren’t. ”Sellout” didn’t sit well with Kurt, who was already having second thoughts about success. But he was famously conflicted. I’m not sure he ever reconciled either way.

So, there's a problem with not only mixing Nirvana, but Grunge in general. Grunge was basically an expression of rawness, everything felt a lot more real. Mixing it like you did, it sounded good, but it lost a bit of the soul of Grunge when you mixed with it. If you were mixing new, unreleased music, i think it would sound great. But, considering that this was a genre where a more garbage mix made the songs more enjoyable, it just doesn't sound right.

What's interesting is the *original* mix by Steve Albini (which we don't hear on the album) was not "commercial" enough (he said the record label panicked a bit), and he disqualified himself from this revision as he felt he did it the way the artists wanted it, so he stepped aside for it to be remixed however the record label wanted.

This video is missing major context behind Heart Shaped Box. The version of Heart Shaped Box that was released on In Utero was already remixed by Scott Litt who did a brilliant job on it and far better than Steve Albini's mix. There was little bit of a fight about it between Albini and Nirvana at the time but essentially when Nirvana left the studio and listen to In Utero they had issues with the mix. They then hired Scott Litt to remix a few songs and then used Bob Ludwig to make some additional changes in the master. Albini at first refused to hand over master tapes but he relented. Anyway not a fan of this remix at all with the chorus vocals being butchered

yeah this is actually remixing a remix of Scott Litt version. not a fan of this because it's basically like taking a famous photograph and then throwing it into photoshop and then saying here this is better because I boosted contrast, added some sharpening...etc. the issue with these remixes(not just from this channel) is that it's the same thing most times. going in and exaggerating every track and then declaring mix better because "it's meatier" example of this is the terrible Megadeth remixes that Dave Mustaine oversaw with their entire catalog. it was fine for the early Megadeth albums that had production issues but remixing and remastering Countdown To Extinction.....Youthansia like wtf where they thinking?
@vlcthefish
@vlcthefish 11 ай бұрын
@@BecomeTheKnight Going to the 6:00 marker in the video, the part of "Hey wait" sounds completely artificial to Kurt's voice in a bad way and it's even more noticeable with the drop off in that effect in the following lines "forever in debt to your priceless advice" (I am listing with generic Sony MDR 7506) Remember your not remixing Steve Albini's mix which is actually bad and is the raw he's talking about in your video clip ......that would be more interesting to mix. Your remixing Scott Litt's version and Scott Litt is a legend in that world who's done tons of albums. They literally brought him in last min to remix this song for the radio. It's tough to improve on it without sounding overexaggerated.

I love nirvana but never really liked the production on In Utero, even the 2013 remixes I didn't think improved the issues. One song that I think was improved was the Scott Litt mix of Pennyroyal Tea that ended up as the single version. Comparing the album version of heart shaped box (scott litt mix), it is slightly better than the albini mix, though they are kind of opposites where certain elements I prefer with one of the other I am surprised how small the Scott Litt mix sounds considering it was intended to be more of a single big song sound. What is interesting is parts of your mix sound more like the Albini Mix with more clarity and better vocals so maybe its closer to what they thought they were trying to do. Ultimately I don't think the band actually liked In Utero as much sonically and slightly regretted the approach Albini took.

If there is a track I'd want to see remixed that needs it badly it's the title track of Dogman by King's X! Want to like that track more than I do but I can tell it's not Brendan O'Brien at his best work! Doubt you'll get to do this but it would be cool if you do! Thanks and have a good day!

The vocals might be a little more biting than I would like from the original (I'm not a Nirvana fan either) but the rest is SIC!!

I agree to an extent! There's something intimate in the verse that gets lost and I wanted to keep that in tact. I like how they bite in the chorus myself, but to each their own!

...making a Nirvana song more commercial...what on earth is the point in THAT? I mean, Nevermind was overproduced and never captioned how the band sounded live. In Utero was exactly the " we don't play by the rules of the industry" album that was needed. I get that you are into modern, polished mixes ( that I personally can'T stand for the most part); but this remix, to me, removes the heart and intent of this song

Because it would be interesting to see what it would sound like the same way he changed dyers Eve even though the band would never go back and change any of the justice songs

@@BecomeTheKnight i think, especially the reverb makes it more muddy. The original sounds very direct, especially the chorus really " jumps" at the listener". This dynamic impact, to me at least, is lost here. But then, I really love Albini's work overall. Here, with Ken Mode, Bush and the Jesus Lizard. Maybe the best producer for noisy alternative. His mixes are almost impossible to beat for this kind of music imho

You don’t have to understand it. I probably don’t care for some shitty music you like. It got to you though. Mission accomplished by the artist. Plus we have some truly abysmal art and music these days that truly warrants a wtf is wrong with people liking this. Lol. But I will agree to some degree Albini and the recordings were some missed opportunities if you’re going to try to pull it into a personal preference. But that’s the cool thing I’ve found in my time as a sound engineer. His thing is trying to capture a band playing and the natural sound you would hear irl. That’s a lot more harder to do than thought. Capturing reflections. He definitely did that and does it well. I find a lot of recording engineers serve to stroke their selves and fail to serve songs by what they actually need and what they think is cool to play with. And tragically that’s usually in the form of their ruining a track with a compressor. Especially if said engineers are labeling the track with the name of compressor in it. API Kick lol. Your mix is distorted and unpleasant to my just my iPhone listening. That album has dynamics something horribly killed in todays productions because the simple notion our ear perceives louder as better when compared. You pretty much did that with it and sure there are elements of that album that could have benefited from the kick being more pronounced etc (that’s why it had recommended stereo settings of where bass and treble should be in the sleeve) but avg listeners who don’t even know what a compressor is or HP LP filter or parallel eq yada yada don’t care. I’ve played 2 mixes of the same song to my wife who is just completely illiterate to music production and they were dramatically different mixes and she couldn’t even tell any difference in listening to them initially. It matters more than it doesn’t of course but to what degree? I’d say a hair under my gear being labeled on the instruments track 😂 (that shit just kills me especially when the drums sound so shitty they can’t even barely be triggered and blended to help them)

I think you were successful in what you were trying to do. And I think that's a bad thing =p. Haha I feel like you killed the soul of it. Coming from Brazil, where rock music got completely taken over by corporate interests and censorships since the 80s, I appreciate immeasurably Kurt's struggle to keep doing what he wanted to do. I see your remix as what would happen if the corporate big wigs had won. But now I have a challenge.. In the same vein as what you just did. Lost in Vegas reacted to some Mastodon's (Blood and Thunder, Oblivion) and didn't appreciate the "raw" mixing. If you watch the videos, you'll see they find the mix "muffled". They even think the "problem" might be on their end. Some other bands like this kind of mix, like Baroness and Pelican. The suggestion is to "'unmuffle" a Mastodon song from one of those albums (to a standard somebody like Lost in Vegas would appreciate, clean, pristine, thick and full).
