This is a video response to ‪@KaijuKim‬'s video "the godzilla fandom sucks," which is an important video I think everyone should watch as it addresses the online departure of fellow Kaiju KZbinr & friend ‪@AlyssaGojiGeek101‬ . As a fandom, we need to get better with dealing with the gross behavior both online and at conventions. It's unacceptable.

I had to call out someone I liked in the Godzilla fandom because they were revealed to be a CHILD PREDATOR. It was such a mindfxck, but I passed it on after verifying because the safety of minors matters more than my butthurt or them being mad at me for not staying quiet. This fandom needs to wake up!

That’s why I stay with the movies and characters and far away from the fandom. The fandom takes away the speciality of this amazing franchise. They make others feel different towards a certain movie or character because of the way others act and treat them. The fandoms of any franchise sucks and ruins the fun. My advice to all of you is to like what you like and stay far away from the fandom because at the end of the day they only care for themselves

Great video. I'm pleasantly surprised this is creating so much new awareness. Back in the day, I did my "Sexism/pedophilia in Godzilla fandom" video that got the conversation rolling, but it's been five years now, and a lot has changed/worsened since. That multiple people have already caught on to this and are responding to the multi-pronged grievances I have with the fan base with their own statements is refreshing. There's so much wrong, and I think I speak for all of us when I say I want it to be right.

I remember that video well! I think many of us have had grievences for a long time. The issue is that we've been labeled "overdramatic" or "oversensitive" for feeling any sort of way (valid feelings I might add, considering how we've been treated). I kid you not there were homophobic remarks in one of the Godzilla groups on Facebook involving the monarch show. Specifically where the two actresses were kissing each other and I called people called out for the remarks (even though I'm not in the LGBT community) but I couldn't let that slide. I agree with what you say in this video. It's even worse in Godzilla groups. One minute people are complaining about Godzilla action figures being crappy and this not the third. In the next minute we have a whole bunch of people constantly bashing the 1998 Godzilla movie or Zilla with a whole bunch of memes that get really annoying and are unfunny but the second I mentioned how useless minya is all of a sudden everyone thinks it's annoying and toxic. The Godzilla community in general is full of nothing but toxicity and double standards. We're almost as toxic as the Star wars fans and some of the anime fans.

Since I’m out of the loop here. My comment is gonna be on the broader scale and not this situation in particular. The fandom is starting to reach a toxicity that I’m starting to get unhappy about. Like being rude to others for liking a certain version of Godzilla more than others. Hating on other Kaiju fandoms like King Kong, Gamera, etc. Being rude about people’s different preferences for goji whether it’s silly or serious. I’ve noticed this happening way more when minus one came out and attracted “Fans” It’s getting upsetting how awful it’s getting I’m on the younger side of the Godzilla fandom so maybe this has been happening way longer than I’m aware of But overall it’s getting frustrating…

WOW. This was......I can't find the words. Because here's the thing. For the past two G-FESTs, I unfortunately noticed this kind behavior in the G-Fan community in little increments. At the time, I thought it was just some kidding around. But with Alyssa announcing what said earlier, makes me really rethink things. I go to G-FEST because I felt it's a wholesome outlet for Kaiju Fans to breathe easy. And coincide with one another. But now, if this entity is not even safe for our Kaiju Sisters, then why have any events at all if they themselves can't feel secured next to their Kaiju Brethren? I know this is a lot to say, but I'm not blind. I'm an observer of Life. And knowing that these types of outcomes exist, makes me truly ashamed that I'm part of supposedly decent realm.😢

We should ALL be as inclusive, welcoming, and as warm as possible to our fellow fans regardless of race, gender identity, or anything. There is zero excuse for this kind of behavior. We're in a golden age of Godzilla, we should be celebrating not assaulting, stalking, verbally harassing, or threatening our fellow fans. It's a combination of the nature of fandom in general and the appalling toxicity of the internet. Sci-fi fandom is overwhelmingly male, and fans are people who continue to use their imaginations throughout their lives, instead of clamping them off in adulthood, as we are pressured to do. We can do that because we still have a part of us that remains childlike. That is, as we know, positive and negative, because, while giving us an energizing sense of wonder, it can also cause us to be immature. The hate posts and threats are a disappointing evolution of childhood name-calling and playground bullying in a time in our culture when spreading nastiness without consequences is practically effortless, and younger and younger people are able to access the fandom. The innate immaturity that allows us to enjoy fantastic films and other media leaves many of us socially underdeveloped and less able to relate to 'normal' people. This includes our conceptions of sex and sexuality. You're dealing with a predominantly-male population whose sexual access is often limited by their differences in nature from the majority of the population, so you're going to find a lot of individuals who don't know how to act appropriately. All this put together is a recipe for toxicity and disregard for social norms. I am NOT excusing any of this deplorable, even illegal behavior. I have pondered on this phenomenon since I first experienced fandom up close over 30 years ago, and thus far, these are the conclusions that I have arrived at.

I've been a fan for literal decades and been openly trans for a decade. I can't gage when I'm treated worse in the fandom-when I wasn't or was out as trans. Seriously, I think what makes this fandom so insidious with this stuff isn't just like...the handwaving it's the dismissal of going "this happens in every fandom" because literally no the fuck it does not, and it has *always* been this grotesque in this fandom,. It's such a weird fandom for it to happen in? Why is the, specifically, American fanbase of a Japanese franchise letting weirdos just say and do what ever the fuck they want? I think it's only gotten worse because of the fandom boom in 2013 when younger and newer fans flooded in after Pacific Rim and older gen fans were REALLY gross and weird about (mostly) literal kids getting into the fandom they seem to care so much about. There is this weird "we found it first, so we have control of the narrative/canon" in this fandom that's so distinctive. Like as in, actively attempting to appropriate the characters (and sometimes creators and creator comments on said characters) within their own ideology/mindset specifically with complete lack of awareness or nuance of Japanese viewpoints, culture, or politics. I say this as someone who wasn't out in 2014 and was sent death threats after saying I had a Head Canon of a monster being a girl! I have a lot of close friends I've made through the fandom and G-Fest, but I eventually just kind of had to step the fuck back because a lot of these people get so absolutely intolerable.

Well shit, I thought she was fun and lighthearted. I was thinking of going to GFest to meet everyone for the first time. There always idiots ruining it for others. My thoughts… maybe start a fresh new Godzilla celebration somewhere else. I always wondered what it was like. Never been to G Fest.

I have seen every video about this topic. People need to understand that there are toxic/fake people in every fandom community, either good or bad, we have to deal with it, not to accept their behavior and banned them out of the godzilla community in general. remember we need to be civil and mutual respect every fan's opinions, not bashing, or discriminate others.

NGL it makes me sad when a YTer or just overall social media person I follow says they will step away from a fandom I love but then I realize I am kinda doing the same thing with Star Wars now Like after the Mandalorian S2, people just seem so bent on complaining about every show afterwards to the point where it is just pointless ragebait over nothing until it circled back to hating on the Mandalorian S2 saying it was only ever good cos "it had cameos" 😔 The Goji fandom is starting to have that now. It's been exposed to a larger audience but sadly that larger audience has some loud annoying, nitpicky fuckers

I will say tho, offline, it's been fantastic! I am seeing kids being huge fans of Godzilla and Kong with convos like this "Mommy, Daddy, I want the Godzilla figure" "Son, you already have a Godzilla figure at home" "Can I have the Kong then?" Dad: "Uhhhh does he have a Kong figure at home already?" Mom: "Eh just buy it" I am just glad that there is a beautiful flip side to the negativity we see online and we are seeing a new generation pick it up I do still hope one day, this positivity slips back online too

Honestly I’m really disappointed how the fandom has turned out. Especially how Alyssa got treated is just horrible! I hope she’s doing well. It makes me wish that Godzilla didn’t become so mainstream and was still niche. I still love Godzilla and the franchise but it’s really frustrating when the fandom has become so divided that it’s hard to talk about what we like. That’s why I choose entertainment over fandom anytime. Nice video.

Am Like "what"? 😅 excuse me, do people like wear badges as well? 📛 I've encounter many fandoms in conventions and such, but a Godzilla Fandom? Never. I've met fans, am one to a degree as well. Yeah, it honestly sucks seeing how so many people within the godzilla fandom end up acting like this. It's not only disgusting behavior, but it negatively affects so many people, from those that're having this fone to them, to those who're friends with those people Heck, I've seen plenty of times where people would go on to harass others for sinple things like opinions, like how so many people attacked and harassed someone because they said that they didn't like shin godzilla as a movie, or the multitude of times arguments have happened over the designs of some of the kaiju, and heck, even within the side of the community that work on art, there's harassment, like someone making over 20 accounts to harass someone's art and fan designs of goji and other kaiju, and another person who not only harassed the same person over their art style and designs, but went on to say some heinous things to others, lime telling a 14 yo that they were gonna tough their lifeless body, and even tried to frame someone else of being behind the account It honestly really sucks seeing how bad the fandom is getting. Like its somehow getting more toxic than the actual kaiju mutated by a nuke. Whike i honestly don't have that much hope left, I can only hope that things can get better and this tyoe of behavior gets called out more and more

Im in the side of the community where we do powerscaling and stuff like that. But we just cant escape the toxicity honestly, especially with monsterverse fans where they say like size is more important than feats, and when someone like me where i have to point out that powerscaling is more accurate than size or battle analysis, they become rabid animals, they get so angry, they fight in the comment sections about how powerscaling doesnt matter, or like they just keep hyping one version of godzilla like Earth or legendary as the strongest because of size and not power. Its understandable if you cant relate with me here, but honestly their just worse. Their was even one time where one guy got sent a video by one of these "monsterverse fans" of a person ( i dont really wanna describe it) taking his self out, the guy didnt really told us why the kid sent him the video but based from the channel the kid had he was monsterverse fan that hates heisei. So we assumed that the kid sent the video because the guy presumably made a post on how heisei godzilla beats legendary godzilla in a fight and got angry. The fact its a kid who doesnt know any better was the one to send him the video is just baffling honestly. Honestly lets just keep fighting really, its just like pandemic it may or may not go away

This is becoming outrageous for the Godzilla fandom no one shouldn’t be deserve to be treated badly and the Godzilla fan fandom has gotten even more toxic, terrible and mentally unstable and really pushing political ideology and propaganda into all of the fandoms that is why I don’t go to g-fest or any other fandom festival because I don’t feel safe and comfortable and stop stalking, sexual harassment on to our kaiju sisters, brothers and family the Godzilla fandom needs to get their act together or else but I don’t know if it happens but toho will take action

I cant wait for all these dramatic people to be forgotten. Theres nothing wrong with the fandom other than the fact that it has people in it. And people all have to face shitty people. @@Bakamatsu-GojiFanArchive Here's a rebuttal for you: just because you *may* not have faced this same level of hate doesn't mean it isn't incredibly real for others. You may re-think labeling us "overdramatic" if you were threatened, called slurs, or stalked at conventions on a regular basis like many of us have been. You're free to have your opinion of course, but optically speaking, you "disagreeing with me," suggests that you disagree that this toxic behavior is unacceptable. Do you think this toxic behavior should go unconfronted?

@@DonnyWinter I never said it shouldn't be confronted but generalizing the whole fanbase as toxic over a few individuals is pretty wild. Tell me is the black community toxic? A quick look at crime statistics would lead you to believe so by that logic. Shitty people are in every corner of the world including the internet. But getting on a soap box and morally presiding over us as if we dont already shun such behavior is pretty cringeworthy. Last time I checked most godzilla groups have rules against such things and admins are always on top of giving the ban-hammer to problematic folks. People not having the brain power to just mute and block people that are harassing them is the real issue here. Like did your parents ever teach you how to safely navigate the internet? I'm not downplaying anything. Just confused by everyone not using common sense.
