A lot of people seem to think that there is only one type of Shimmer ( the kind from ep 1-3), but the shimmer from the earlier episodes was still a less refined prototype (transformed people into beasts). After the time jump, it's shown that there are different variants shimmer.; some is recreational drug, some is for physical enhancements (like Sevika, and Viktor use), some is still the unrefined stuff (ep 6 shimmer addicts), etc.

It's ironic that something created as a weapon of war (shimmer) has become something that can be used to heal and preserve life, whilst something created to help people (hextech) has been turned into a weapon of war.

Silco may have been using Shimmer as a treatment in the early episodes too - pretty sure he uses his eye injector the very first time you see him, it's just that it's in the dark so you can't see if it uses shimmer or not then.

i thought silcos eye produces shimmer, and he just uses a spring loaded needle to release a little at a time into his system.. i thought his eye mutation produces the real stuff, while the scientist he works with synthesizes an artificial version of what comes from silcos eye..

@@StayFractalesque seems unlikely, it still seems to function as an eye and it's grotesquely swollen. Shimmer is probably made from the purple fungus that Singed was feeding to Rio.

Some Viktor comments, which I forget if Stella noticed or not: Viktor's 'race' scene is a callback to when as a child his toy boat outraced him. If you look at the background you can see this time he's outpacing a real boat. Viktor's mistake was not using shimmer... either out of impatience or the belief he couldn't get past the bridge blockade. So the hexcore took its payment out in Sky this time, since Viktor wasn't 'shimmered up'. Also notable is that it didn't even alter much for Viktor this time, simply his hand.

The thing I love most about Arcane is that while plot points are often surprising, they also feel _inevitable_ . Once Powders Bomb killed everyone in Ep. 3 I had this moment of "This was always going to go this way. Because of who Vi is, who Powder is who Silco and Vander are... This was never gonna end well..." And of course that isn't entirely true, but it still _feels_ Like this surprising moment is something that is completely the right and only conclusion

I like the fact that by the end of the episode Stella has come to the realization that it's difficult to agree or disagree with anybody. Which is why we've kind of been trying to push you away from this "good guys vs bad guys" concept. It doesn't work so well here. And forget about making predictions with this show. I remember during episodes 1-2, I thought I had an idea where this show was headed. By episode 3.... forget it... half the characters were dead, other half definitely weren't going where I thought they were. And I gave up on predictions after that.

I recently injured up my knee a few months ago. Went to physical therapy but my problems haven't gotten better. Now I'm going for surgery on it next week. Its made getting around difficult. Since getting injured, that scene with Victor letting out a primal scream when he's finally able to run hits so much harder for me. Can't wait till I get mobility back. I feel for Victor and totally understand that desire.

I can completely relate to your comment. I broke my leg back in May (two places: the ankle and the fibula about halfway between the ankle and knee) and I couldn't walk at all for the first two months and had to hop everywhere. I have about ten screws and a long plate holding things in place. My walking is starting to get better now but I still can't even jog let alone run. The scene with Viktor just hits different now

@@eloisenewman3814 Thankfully my injury is not that bad. Just a strained quad and a torn meniscus. But they missed the tear in the meniscus when they first evaluated me. I can walk, just slowly and carefully if I don't want it to be too painful. I could run or jog if I absolutely needed to, but it would be absolute agony. I feel for you since I'm restless and miserable as is. It must be so much worse for you. I wish you a full and speedy recovery. Best of luck to you.

The comment about not knowing who would win shimmer vs hex tech in a way and also forgetting Noxus and Mel's mom, who seems to have interest and knows war well right there in the picture too

When Vi talked to Catlyn about running away from the monster instead of protecting Powder, who was she talking about? The obvious answer is Silco, but maybe it's Vi herself? She slapped her in the moment of her vulnerability and called her a jinx. Or maybe it's Jinx? Vi didn't protect Powder from the monster soon to form in Powder's head. She didn't know how the events in episode 3 would affect Powder at the time, but she may be blaming herself anyway. I think she meant Silco, but it's interesting to explore alternative meanings.

As someone who had some difficulty taming my temper as a youth, I can very much believe Vi is referring to herself. There was one event with one of my younger siblings that closely paralleled the punch scene in Ep.3 I am not proud of.

I'm going with Silco, as although other interpretations can work -- such as the monster is actually the anger inside of Vi herself, the issue I run across is that Vi isn't typically that introspective. It doesn't seem like something her character would think. Vi never struck me as a deep thinker nor someone to come up with philosophical interpretations of her childhood game. I mean it's possible, but it doesn't seem to really match up so great with the character we have seen so far. And although she attempts to go back to Powder when Silco makes a repeat visit at the end of that episode, I think she's talking more in generalities... referring to her initial abandonment of Powder, and Silco was the monster who caused the events in the first place.

To me, that doesn't necessarily mean she ran away from Silco literally... simply that he showed up (or caused the event), she ran away and left her sister.

@@Mi_Z Vi isn't an abstract thinker, and she was hauled away while clawing to get back to protect Powder. I think the interpretation that she saw the budding "monster" of Jinx in her sister and backed away from it amidst the dead father figure and the fire and destruction, and that's what she thinks she failed to protect her sister from, and ran away from.

Nice interpretation by Stella in regard to Jayce --- yeah, he's not exactly ready for the ramifications of war. That's why the child dying was so important. I realize many just want a fun action scene, but realistically there should be collateral damage (unlike what we see in most superhero films). The child wasn't a chem-suit guard by the way (she made a comment wondering how many were children)... he was the child at the beginning of the scene who pressed the alarm button. As for what is next... I'm not going to comment on what actually happens next, but hypothetically what should happen next based up to this point. If we follow Vi's 'plan'... either Silco's people take him out due to shimmer production being reduced. Or they go with a full-scale invasion since Silco has been weakened. Both options present problems. Honestly, it was a bad plan from the start. Vi sounded... forceful... during the council scene, but the other council members were right to disregard her. It's Vi's style to 'punch first, worry about the consequences later' ... so her behavior fit her character, just that it's not really well thought out. The people who would take out Silco would be the chem-barons. And they are even worse than Silco, both for the undercity's people and any hope for independence. They obviously don't care about either. And taking out Silco means taking out his entire organization... so Jinx gets a target on her back. And a full-scale invasion... well, that obviously presents some problems for both sides. As a bonus, since Vi betrayed her sister by giving up her name at the council meeting (no reactors ever react to this), even if an invasion worked and enforcers marched in, it'd mean Jinx rotting in a jail cell. It'd take close to a miracle for everything to just go perfectly right for us to see an outcome that we'd say is positive.

Keep in mind Singh might have a little resentment for Jinx aka Powder, since she did blow him up and nearly kill him at the end of episode 3. He was the doctor from the first episode working with Silco this whole time and he was in the lab when it blew up. This episode we see some of the damage it did to his face. In response to your question about why he did what he did to Jinx, he saved her for Silco but likely didn't have problems causing her pain for the reasons I already stated.

A lot of people say her dad was "bad" because he taught her death. I disagree... especially in a nation ruled by warlords. Everyone needs to learn death and some need that lesson earlier than others. My grandfather taught us death, how to kill, when he made us help him slaughter a batch of rabbits for their meat. People who ranch farm animals usually learn death at a very young age. Obviously the death of a person carries more weight, but I wasn't raised as a kings noble son in an Empire ruled by warlords.

As for your final comment, I agree Arcane broke me on watching other stuff. I just keep saying... this isn't as good as Arcane etc. It took me months to get over it and it is why I am afraid to watch the whole series again because it might break me again.

I may be wrong, but I think this is Stella's first reaction ... so she has started off with if not the best animated show ever, one of the best. It may put a damper on followup shows, even if they are good in their own right. I ran across a bebop opening reaction by her, and although cowboy bebop is considered a classic and is a good show, it's a very different sort of show. Besides something like GOT (1-4), it's difficult to come up with other shows that go as in-depth or is of similar high quality. Sucession.. maybe? But they aren't going to help her much as they obviously aren't animated.

@@nutluck -- SPOILERY FOR GAME OF THRONES -- To me, the problem with GOT is that seasons 7-8 not only ruined most of the good feelings about the show, it also miraculously has made the earlier seasons somehow worse. As now we know where it's headed... and well, it's not to a good place. But if we consider seasons 1-4 as a standalone thing, they still hold up as some of the best episodes of any series, at least in my opinion. It's just tricky trying to forget the remainder of the show.

I love Silco as a villain. He’s a perfect example of the ends not justifying the means. He was exploited by Piltover. He watched his friends, family and neighbours used in horrible ways, to the point of them becoming sick and dying for the benefit of people who never have to look upon or even think about the squalor they live in. So he fought back against the injustice. And betrayed by Vander. Why? I can only assume that he was going too far in his fury, so Vander cut a deal with the enforcers for peace to stop the bloodshed. The price being Silco. Now, Silco has become everything that he once railed against. He is in power, exploiting people to get what he wants. A noble goal of independence and a better life twisted by the things he does to achieve them. He sees it as a necessary evil. He’s an excellent tragic villain.

Your Silco-Vander betrayal theory sounds like it should fit the story -- but the timing doesn't work. Nor does portraying Silco as being so full of fury that Vander had to take him down... that doesn't really match up with what we know either. Silco being betrayed by Vander appears to pre-date Vander's rebellion. Vander has no beard, and they both look quite a bit younger... younger than the opening shot on the bridge. So since it pre-dates the rebellion, we can't really go with the idea that Silco was going overboard with his fury and Vander cut a deal with enforcers for peace, w/ Silco as the price. We should also remember that pre-drowning Silco was a very different man compared to post-betrayal. He admits he was a weaker man, which likely would mean he was less ruthless... the lessons learned from the betrayal shaped who he is now ... or who we viewed from Ep 1 onwards. We probably wouldn't recognize pre-betrayal Silco as the same man. I don't think the show has given us enough information to really even theorize why Vander betrayed Silco. We can say Vander felt bad about it -- so we can question if it was justifiable. But other than that **shrugs** And I don't view Silco as a villain ... a morally gray character to me.

To me, Silco (and Sevika) is all about the cause, not the individuals. He believes in a better future for the people of Zaun, but doesn't care about the individuals crushed to achieve it. Vander (and Vi) became the opposite - he decided the cause wasn't worth the cost to the individuals to achieve. Silco has been of huge benefit to the undercity as a whole, but at the cost of many people who have fallen through the cracks. Vander made sure all the people were looked after and shared what they had, but the Undercity itself was strangled and repressed. Nobody is entirely good or entirely bad.

@@Sinewmire I agree. Silco's plan does not really mean everyone in Zaun will benefit, NOW. Quite the opposite, many will be sacrificed for the future. I think a lot of people consider this price too high, therefore to them the ends don't justify the means. Or they just consider him 'evil' ... turned into everything he once despised... he is in it just for the power. But to Silco, the ends would justify the means -- he has a valid reason to do the things he does, in his mind. And if looked at objectively, we can't say for certain he's wrong. Or at least I can't. And that's why he's not a villain to me. Problem is that there really are no good options. I think one of the reasons the show is so open to interpretation is that no matter what choice most characters take, the outcome likely would be pretty bad. It's just a matter of is 'pretty bad' a better choice compared to 'absolutely horrible'? And when looking at Silco's drive for independence, it's a similar choice. He can choose the 'pretty bad' option of sacrificing lives now in order to build upon freedom for future generations. Or go with Vander's model of despair for... well, forever. For those who consider the ends not justifying the means, I guess a valid criticism is that there could be better way... but most people criticizing him don't offer up any other workable solutions. And it's not like I blame them for that either, as I'm not even sure there are any other solutions that would be any better. But they should recognize that fact -- if Zaun is to achieve its independence, somehow, someway, a certain percentage of people will likely have to suffer and die as the cost.

Singed clearly loves his work but he definitely saved Jinx only as a solid to Silco. They do have a working relationship and seems like Silco's been funding his research.

Yep, Singed is who created shimmer in the first place. It probably wouldn't go so well for Singed to turn away Silco with a "Nah, I'm busy, don't really feeling like saving her right now." Something to note in that scene is how he threatens and seemingly is willing to kill Singed, after he wakes up. Singed has helped create his empire, he's why shimmer exists. But it shows just how important Jinx is to Silco that he's willing to threaten the man who made it all possible.
