All you had to do was say facial recognition and I automatically knew it was going to be transphobic and racist. When my phone won't even recognize my face, and some apps can't even take a picture of me because I'm black, not even dark-skinned, just black. I know that apps that rely on facial recognition software are designed to fail. Additionally since I was in my 20's I've been misgendered as a trans woman. I'm 6'2" afab. Those experiences made me realize that people have no idea what men or women actually look like. So the idea that you could know someone's gender, and ascribe that gender to that person based on a cursory look or a picture is dumb. She's not the first CEO that's shown themselves to be a clown, and she won't be the last.🤡

@@galesk344 it's not the programming of the AI, it's the DATASETS used for it. Most anime art already doesn't really depict folks with darker skin very well, many depictions being outright racist, and a lot of others being just "same anime design but with dark skin tones". So the programming itself doesn't really cause that, the datasets do. It's still indicative of a whole issue regarding anime artwork and anime in general, however. Edit: I was responding to how you replied to the comment about the AI anime thing. The folks who made the AI face recognition thing ARE transphobic and racist though and did affect that one.

@@exist4046 The background transphobia and racism in Anglo-Western culture which heavily dominates Comp Sci means that commercial facial recognition software is released to the public when it doesn't work for at least one significant minority population in the same country (US company; US population is 13% Black). It's also a problem across the tech industry, not only with this one product (though Kairos might be egregious; I didn't look). I remember vividly when early Google face-recognition algorithms (about 10 years ago?) identified Black people in photos as gorillas, not even as a human. Somebody gave it that input, and I find it pretty egregious that the industry is making the same kinds of mistakes today despite everything. Especially since this specific company has been around for that whole time, I would say they had the opportunity before to recognize and correct the shortcomings in their algorithm.

Data scientist here. ML algorithms falling short in identifying PoC has been a problem for ages because of how datasets don’t appropriately include them. Also even if trans people didn’t exist, you’d still have some percentage of women who would be labeled as men by the model. Like, no matter what, the gimmick of the app is absolute garbage.

i feel like, now 2 years on hrt, that my plans to get ffs kind of erroded. first of all its expensive, and second of all i have seen all types of cis female faces. having a pretty face isnt a prerequisite to being a female. i am lucky enough not to need the surgery because the pills worked. not that my face was ever that big so it helped having small frame and small face. the fat filled in so well that my curve and everything looks natural i just need the lamen, adams apple surgery. tiny bit of the top. you dont have to look like a disney character to pass, or be valid. started at 25 yrs now im 27. i get gendered correctly now. just by taking care of skin, teeth, makeup, working on voice. the process works little by little you got to try and people will notice. anyone trans and still searching for answers, dont change because other people dont like a feature. if that feature bothers you, change it for you, not anyone else. we are trying to fix our gender dysphoria, not catter to cis society. dont let cis people make your journey about them.

Fun-Funky-Fresh fact is that 1 in 80,000 people have Swyer syndrome, meaning they have XY chromosomes, but have female parts and are usually raised as a girl, and 1 in 20,000 AMAB people have de la Chapelle syndrome and have XX chromosomes, but develop and are raised as boys so- a chromosomal test would probably be about as accurate at their AI is lmao

As a transmasc person, I would feel extremely uncomfortable being on a platform made for women for a multitude of reasons. The most obvious is that I'm not a woman. I do not wish to invade a space not meant for me. But the second cuts deeper. I am so early in my journey that the only transitioning I've done is buying a bunch of men's clothes, cutting my hair short, and adding he/him pronouns as okay next to the admittedly still preferred they/them. I still look feminine, especially given I clock a lot of the stereotypical feminine traits. If I joined a women's app because I still look feminine, that would cause me a lot of social dysphoria and I would hate that I'm being seen as "not enough of a man" due to my appearance. Sure, I don't have physical dysphoria, but I do get a huge amount of social dysphoria over things that scream out my assigned gender. No, I don't wish to be here. I don't belong here. I am not a woman.

Funny fact: The “problem” with facial recognition on these kinds of apps is that the bots only identify what the programmers think women look like. So butch cis women are often booted, but hyperfem trans women CAN get in

It's not necessarily the programmers, but rather the dataset used to train the models. If you're trying to identify plants, then only using pictures of flowers in the training dataset will create an overspecialised model. Programmers don't typically collate their own datasets or even necessarily train their own models. You can essentially plug in a pre-trained models, relevant to your application. The issue with this is that your programme inherits any biases in that model. This is a huge issue with ML and AI models more generally, because a lot of the data that exists isn't representative of the wider population (usually for historical reasons). For example, early voice recognition struggled to interpret female voices, because it had been trained on predominately male voices as the industry was male dominated (and still is to an extent). So you can actually bake in existing biases and discrimination, even without holding those views yourself.

that's false. The problem with these kinds of apps is that they have incomplete datasets that do not contain an appropriate amount data for certain demographics. This also becomes extra difficult when you try to exclude demographics which have overlaping characteristics for what the AI looks for. It's not like you can just submit a drawing to the AI and let that magically sort everything out itself

I wonder if people used that filter that makes you look more feminine and could get in with it. If so, that would defeat the whole point. As someone who took a computer ethics course, we learned that AI is in fact racist and sexist because many humans are and those biases get passed on. You'd have to work really hard to accommodate every single edge case, and that would take a long time. It just seems like a silly idea, you'd think there'd be something else to get in. Even colourblindness would be a more accurate metric than faces. As someone who often gets mistaken for a teen boy (which led to me discovering I'm nonbinary), it's hard to define what makes someone look feminine. It can't be hairstyles as those change so much, and face shapes often don't fit into one box or the other. Makeup would influence it too.

I’m a cis woman and from the word “Giggle” I immediately knew that would be a miserable place to interact. That before the facial recognition horror was brought up! All the supposedly immutable truths bigots use to categorize “females” don’t apply to me. I’m 5’10,” I have significant body hair including on my chest and neck, I wear US 11 (UK 9 EU 42ish) shoes, I have large hands, and I’m fat as well. This kind of transphobia led to my being treated for PCOS (which I don’t have) for over a decade because even endocrinologists couldn’t process a cis woman who is just plain fat and hairy and needed me to squish into the little box which suited their world view.

My understanding of TERF (and other anti-trans) rhetoric is that there are "no true intersex" people. That all people with intersex conditions are essentially one or the other as they were "supposed to" or "meant to" be. Usually they focus on chromosomes but when that fails, as it does in some situations, they average out phenotypes or something. And at the end they'll say something like it's such a tiny percentage of people that it doesn't even matter. (Ick. On various levels.) Let's be real though. They don't care about people who are intersex. They have no desire to be sure to include them appropriately. The rhetoric is just a response to the very real fact that sex is *not* binary, it's bimodal at best, and can even be classified as a social construct at worst. The very existence of intersex people dismantles a whole lot of their rationalized bigotry. (NB: I am no expert on this and if I've used any inappropriate terms or incorrect facts, please let me know. Also, the terms I put in quotes are terms I've heard TERFs use. I think they are bigoted, loaded, and flatly incorrect.)

I know for a fact that my cishet boomer mum would absolutely roll her eyes at the concept of this app. She's always fought for equality between the sexes, and while she had a bit of a rough patch, she has successfully come through her learning curve regarding gender identity. This kind of reminds me of the hate I have for my GP Office’s eConsult service, that they use to book appointments. The first thing, the questionnaire bot asks you, is your “gender” but only gives the option of male or female, and then uses that answer to give you “gender”/sex specific questions, etc. Which, even ignoring to fact of Intersex people, is so bloody stupid. It forces trans people like me to put our assigned at birth gender, but also depending on where we are on a medical transition standpoint, there could be issues typically associated with _both_ masculine or feminine bodies that apply to us. Plus it just induces a max amount of dysphoria. And I’m sure cis women who can’t get pregnant also feel like shit from some of the auto questions this leads to. Just like ask if someone menstruates, and move on. Really stupid. X’P

As someone who's recently been using the women-centric dating app Her, I've quite enjoyed not having to worry about male harassment. And I've made some lovely trans friends on there; the experience wouldn't be the same without them. Sounds to me like Giggle left out the good bits of a "for women, by women" app and added some bad. Utterly absurd.

I've used it since last May, been on several dates, received no verbal abuse or photos of anyone's genitals, got one remarkably polite offer of a sugar-baby situation (I declined and we were both completely civil about it), and I met a nice gal whom I'm now seeing when life permits. Of course, I'm only one person, and I can't speak to the hookup side of the app since I'm demisexual and not into that, but I've made out okay on my own side of things just by being patient and kind and clear about my needs and boundaries. I hope that helps!

I'm a trans man and I downloaded the app just to see if it would let me in (since they supposedly include trans men), and the app itself didn't even work. When you make an account, you add your phone number and they're supposed to send you a verification code, and the app just never sent me a code despite multiple attempts. 🤷‍♂ Guess they won't be dissuading me lol

Never too late, as a parent of a young trans boy, I am trying to learn as much as possible and such an app is scary.. Sad when women feel threatened by other women, no matter the biological sex. I can hear their reasons why they are afraid, and I can “hear” they are afraid, but I can, in my heart of hearts, not find the understanding for their views… I don’t understand how it takes anything away from CIS women that the umbrella of womanhood gets expanded to all our wonderful colours, groups and categories… and that of course makes it more difficult for me to educate them, since I really can’t meet them at / understand their view. So I need a better understanding of their fears that fuels their views, so that I can get better at dispelling their views and make them more inclusive in their lives…. So thank you for informing about this.

So I've read through their privacy policy and if I'm understanding correctly, they can keep your data for "record keeping" purposes (aka just because they want to have it) and disclose it to any third party they believe to be in "good faith," as well as having including a clause that says they cannot be held liable for it being mishandled and leaked. The terms and conditions also never defines what a "female" is despite using the term frequently, so I don't think its being a "female only" app is even legally binding. Correct me if I'm wrong but that's what I got from it. Also, can license be spelled with two c's? Because if not, they spelled it incorrectly throughout the whole ass thing. Unless I'm the one misinterpreting things this is the most meaningless terms of service and privacy policy I have ever seen. Edit: they also state they "cannot assure you" that your information will be handled in accordance with their privacy policy, so said policy that already allows them to keep and give all of your information to anyone within the undefined guidelines of "good faith" isn't legally binding either so long as they allege that the breach was not intentional!

As an intersex trans male who started transitioning at a young age I cannot imagine being included in a space like this. It feels incredibly invasive for women. I do not know what womanhood is, I have not experienced it a single bit. I would feel extremely uncomfortable. But aye, terf logic

Yes, sure, I am a cis man, I'm not the target demographic, but everything about this rubs me the wrong way. I'm all for a women only-space because misogyny is quite common online, but having one found based solely on hate towards a group is doomed to fail.
