What bugs me is that generally people are like, “he’s a creep”. Yet so many popular people (in charge of a new mainstream cartoon) just hang with him and ignore him drawing some REAL WORLD little girl stuff. It takes time to draw something like that, it’s more than just a “haha joke”.

I was working so much 2012-2018, that I mostly avoided the internet back then. I also had a gap where my family members were either too young, not born or grown up, so I missed the whole Nickelodeon debacle too. The most I got was a family member talking to me about "ethics in video games", but I wasn't gaming much either, so I ignored that too. Can't believe I missed half of youtube being open CP advocates and this is the first time hearing about it.

I think a lot of the holdover of this blanket acceptance of Shad among the migrant KZbin people that were pushed from Newgrounds were people that had made sort of that deeper connection, those ties with him, as animators on that same platform. People like Oney, Egoraptor, probably xKore and others. They all had this culture club mentality back then that survived the transition to KZbin, and like you talk about in this video, the edgy nature of KZbin at the time cultivated this level of acceptance and paved the way for all of this shit. You could practically see Shadman's support shedding in realtime with every line he crossed, as fewer and fewer people cared about him or stood to defend him or side with him over freedom of expression until, even as the era was changing around him, he had almost no one left.

Yeah, I find the pious outrage a little weird tbh. But it's always like this. Once people know that someone who was popular is a bad person, they like to imagine that it was *always* obvious to them, and then start lashing out to prove how obvious it was to them. They don't want to admit that they liked some art by a bad person because they think that reflects badly on them. After a while, I think most of us learn with experience that *anyone* can be a bad person, and most people won't know about it because bad people don't tend to tell everyone what crimes they're doing.

I think it's hard for younglings online to understand, but before the Internet, the levels of free speech were incredibly low. If you wanted to put something out in any way, you had to go through gatekeepers, and the results were negative. So when the Internet was getting going it was truly believed that absolute free speech was the solution. That free from the gatekeepers, the marketplace of ideas would settle with the good ideas at the top and the bad ideas at the bottom. But we just didn't predict the stupidity of people. We were optimistic to the point of naivity. It was an experiment that had never been tried before. It's easy to say in hindsight that it was a failure, and it seems obvious on this side of it how dangerous and stupid that idea was, but back then, with no equivalent experiment, we thought it would yield very different results.

38:03 This is actually the reason I became a chud-lite for a small time. I was a huge Loud House fan at the time, and I continually denied Chris Savino's harassment and blacklisting female animators. I got over it eventually, but the big reason I escaped from that hole was that the MRAs were attacking women directly rather than the ideas of feminism. Honestly, I was never really into the cheerleader types, the popular women, or even the conventionally attractive. That's my tale.

OK, one area I think advil is wrong here is in deciding that people have some duty to make sure everyone knows that they no longer associate with someone who was outed as a nonce... just in case someone can't be bothered to find out. Like, should all these creators have a pinned tweet forever denouncing the guy? It's not like this was the definining moment of Elvis' entire career. Common sense would dictate (to most people, anyway) that if you want to know whether someone's changed their mind about something over the past eight years... that's something you would have to find out, rather than something that you would expect to have shown to you the moment you think about it. I dunno, dude just seems to be really defensive of the Twitter mob.

I remember when I found his KZbin channel 2013-2014. He was drawing popular female characters and then at the end he would draw a BIG OL' bulge on them! I found it funny and became a fan and even went to his websites (Shadbase and Shagbase) There were loli characters but always drawn with big butts and boobs... Till they weren't but this happened slowly, when he did the Keem daughter drawing, I thought nothing of it and thinking it was just him being "edgy of the sake of edgy". I did find it creepy but the reason stopped going to his websites around this time was cause his art getting worst. Later I found out he got better artist to sometimes sketch stuff for him and he'd colored it in. Btw Onlyplays guys haven't been friends with Shad for years now if Cory (Spazkid) Twitter argument with him is something to go on, and Mick became an alcoholic and burned every bridge with the Oneyplays guys
